I'm sure MS is really worried about losing the Japanese market to Sony
Yeah, ASP is very high in Japan. Just like the ASP is higher in EU than in NA. All these things are a factor.Logically, while the console market in Japan is definitely a factor for concern, it's still a relatively healthy gaming market, where there are a growing acceptance towards western games.
Japan is still rather lucrative, all things considered, and it would be dumb for any company to abandon the Japan market, at least for the next few years.
All things being said, Japan is still one of the gaming markets where a large amount of consumers have no issues spending a lot of money to buy games. That on its own makes Japan still worthwhile to invest in.
Then why bother releasing it there at all? Of course its relevant. No one should be worried about losing Japan. They are completely irrelevant console wise

Maybe because console is DEAD in Japan. Handhelds everywhere.

So in other words its MS fault that they reached out to Japan and were ignored.Yep. It's an absolute waste of time and money. MS tried to moneyhat the way to success in Japan, failed and completely disbanded that effort after just three years. Why would any Japanese gamer trust that company anymore?
That's how insignificant Japan is from a sales perspective. Even Sony silently acknowledges this.
.
Microsoft didn't really show up at TGS did they? I know they were there, but I really can't remember hearing anything about the xbone or 360 this week.

D4 won't be big and FFXV and KH probably won't even sell well on Xbox in Japan because of the PS4 option so...Not surprising. There is no big Japanese games announced for the console compared to PS4.
D4 (exclusive), KH3 and FFXV are the only ones I can think of that were announced coming to Xbox One.
No excuse. Sony could have focused on Japan content first. But I doubt Japan is bigger than Europe for consoles.I am sure Sony does not view its home country as insignificant. After the US it is the second biggest single market for them. It is why they have decided to wait and launch it later so as not to piss off early adopters and to have a console and game that matches their needs. The Japanese also have high game and peripheral attach rates so they will definitely not see it as insignificant.
MS's biggest mistake was coming to TGS with absolutely zero announcements at all.
I'm sure they know they'll never do well or even decently in Japan. They just got to feign some interest in the Japanese market for image reasons, to be taken seriously as a contender in the business.I still can't believe they're even bothering with a Japanese release.

Japan is a symbolic market for consoles.

Sour grapes, of the digital kind. I have a feeling this next gen will blow our mind much more than the launch games imply.Well, it's not that easy, putting together a good launch line-up is already hard, let alone having a handful of games tailored to a specific country's tastes. Looking at what happened during the current generation, it's hardly a surprise that the Western studios were able to deliver several high profile launch window games while the Japanese didn't.
And symbolic is just another word to say it doesn't matter, which isn't true.
Except 35/45yo gamers in Japan, nobody gives a damn about video games on console there... Maybe the PSP a bit, and someday the VITA, but that's it. No PS4 at launch in Japan is not a random decision.
Japan is not the heaven of video games anymore.
At least we still have good JRPG/TRPG/Visual Novels from there... for now.
Lots of people saying "neither", that's also kind of a giveaway.
