Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

Am I the only one that's not really excited about this game? I mean, I remember being way more excited when Melee and Brawl were released. Don't get me wrong, not here to rant on Smash Brothers but it definitely feels like there's no charm anymore.

I'm excited, just not overly hyped like I was for Brawl.

When I was waiting for Brawl, I was like: OMGGIVEMETHISGAMEALREADYPLZ.

Here, I'm just: Oh a new Smash Bros with Mega Man? Sweet!

It's a better way to be I think. I'm absolutely convinced Brawl's somewhat lukewarm reception years on is due to the amount of hype everybody, Nintendo included, put behind the game. Add to that the Dojo and multiple delays, and it was never going to live up to the accolade.

They've gone low-key with this one. They've given people what they want. Megaman's in it. It doesn't even have a subtitle. It looks good. It's out next year. Boom.

Even if they nail Download Play (i.e. no dumbass "Play as Shy Guy" type limitations), it won't beat the appeal of playing it on a big screen with various controllers. I don't think it'll cannibalize much to be honest. I'll certainly be getting both at some point down the line.

I agree with you when it comes to North America and Europe, but the Wii U may have lost a system seller in Japan.

Part of me thinks that connectivity between the two and having different content between the two versions is an attempt to prevent that from happening, but it's hard to shake that notion.

It is hard to jump on that train when we don't even know what the connectivity will be. Maybe it will be something mind blowing, maybe it will be meh inducing, we don't know. I acknowledge that it is a wild card though.

I'm gonna get both, but I think the 3DS version is some ploy by Nintendo to sell more 3DS units and I'm wary of using it too much.

I've worn out 2 GCN controllers in my 5-6000 hours of Melee+Brawl (which is a confirmation of Nintendium if anything), but I'm not sure I can justify buying a new console every time I lose the ability to dash to the left.

Ha.

I still think Brawl was the best, but whatever.

I agreed that Brawl is the best out of all because of many reasons. One of major reason is that it have a lot of spin off of mods that would keep Brawl more enjoyable for long long time.

3DS version is coming out later, right? (Unfortunately).

Oh, and I'm back. Sorry if I seemed pissy at all before, just prefer when threads stay on topic. Hadn't been following the thread, saw what looked like a genuine announcement of a Nintendo Direct, and was upset :( I trust you GAF!

Yeah, from what I see that 3DS version is more likely to release way after Wii U's release. That's fine, I understand that you probably got excited but realized that it was just stupid joke. But we are so used to it and we had it worse in IRC. HAHA

3DS is absolutely not the console Nintendo is trying to prop up with a Smash Bros. game.

If you are playing it that intensely, I'd say you might want want to reexamine how much strain you're putting on your electronics.

3DS version will eat the Wii U version's sales hugely.

Japan favours handheld games, so auto-win there, many many kids own 3DS's than Wii U, so more win there, Wii U's install base isn't even near what the 3DS' is.

It's inevitable the 3DS game will sell a shitload more unless the Wii U ends up with a 3DS size install base by release, which is extremely unlikely, almost impossible.

A new model called WavebirdDS will be released, essentially making the 3DS game the definitive version.

I'm getting both even if they come out the same day, so I really don't care, but I still hope the WiiU version comes first to play it with friends.
Also Sm4sh in HD.

Do you guys think that Kirby is getting a different Final Smash?

I mean, I love the Cooking Pot, but shouldn't there be something to represent the newer Kirby games?

Like, say, the Epic Yarn tank
(in before Landmaster)
or one of the super abilities from Kirby's Return to Dreamland?

Rather, I hope there's an Epic Yarn stage >.>

would be so amazing

Kirby's Epic Landmaster

I would like for all of the final smashes to be equally devastating, but I don't see that happening.

Well, most of them already were.

Peach's though? Completely and totally ass.

Heh.

I wouldn't say they were equally devastating. Mario's fire poke and Donkey Kong's dance party of mild distraction don't have anything on Giga Bowser and the Landmaster triplets for example. Some work better on some stages while others work well on all stages, some are easy to dodge while others are impossible to dodge. But I don't really see a way around that without making them all boringly similar.

Well, some of them were devastating in the right circumstances.

Donkey Kong's was a beast on smaller stages if you could get the gimmick,
and Mario's could be good if you managed to trap them in the right spot.

All of them should be devastating in all of the circumstances, though.

The effectiveness of Mario and Donkey Kong's final smashes are almost completely dependent on the stage and the players timing. While Luigi's negative zone and Giga Bowser are almost always a guaranteed kill. Yes, they are all devastating if used correctly, but some of them are a lot easier to use, and a lot less dependent on the stage and player placement.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

I cannot K.O a single person with Giga bowser, suprisingly.

I have survived Mario's fire poke on small stages on numerous occasions. That thing needs to be buffed.

Actually the opposite, they have been confirmed to be the final titles.

Super Smash Bros. four Wii U/3DS would have been better.

They could have been titled Super Smash Bros. Home Console Edition and Super Smash Bros. Portable Edition.

Super Smash Bros. X-Treme Dream Drop Distance Turbo GX Battle Royale World

I think the marketing campaign for this game has been very flawed so far. Melee and even Brawl made it clear from the beginning some significant step ups from previous games. Melee had a new art style, many new characters, already topping Smash 64's line up with the initial reveal, Adventure mode (although it turned out that the stages shown were basically the only ones), more attacks, including some classic ones that were missing in the original, like Link's bow.., Brawl had the Final Smashes, Third party characters with Snake, a new art style again, 5 newcomers in the initial reveal, all of them who could be considered fan favorites, aside from maybe Zero Suit Samus, alongside a stage with animation different from anything seen in the series before...

This new Smash was revealed with three newcomers, two fan favorites and a completely unexpected character, but that was it. The art style looks very close to Brawl's but brighter, and there was no new feature advertised at all. The hype comes just from a new Smash existing, very differently from the previous reveals. I really don't know why this is happening, but I fear the game might end up just like what it looks like currently, just a new Smash entry with new characters and new balance, without really attempting to make the game stand out by itself... They're at a point where new character additions might never really be big enough again, and that's exactly why they should have tried to make the game stand out in other ways. Now, it's still early, but Brawl was early during its reveal too. So, if they had some big new concept to sell, I don't see why it wouldn't be included in the game's initial reveal...

Super Smash Bros. Mascot Fight
Super Smash Bros. The Smash Chronicles
Super Smash Bros. Hyper Smashing
New Super Smash Bros.
Super Duper Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. '15
Zombies ate My Smash Bros.
Super Smash Bros. in Miracle World
Super Smash Bros. 4000
Super Smash Bros. We shall settle this with fisticuffs
Super Smash Bros. Rises
Super Smash Bros. Tentative Title

The titles were a letdown. A total of 3.9% worth of imagination was used.

They're called Smash attacks because that's what you do to the analog stick, right?

Super Smash Bros. Battle of the Nintengods

I think part of the Brawl hype was just how epic the initial trailer was. It was a last minute E3 surprise if I recall. We also got some epic reveals: New Final Smash moves, Redesigned Pit, Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus, and Wario and on top of that we get Snake. All of this with an epic flashy trailer set to a new epic theme for smash (and nothing says epic more than a choir singing Latin)

The New Smash trailer just can't compare. We only got a couple of unexpected (but welcome) newcomers and Mega Man. It just can't compare.

Thats true, I will say that brawl lived up to my personal hype and more, I played that game 8 weeks straight, it practically forgot what its case looked like.

I still prefer Super Smash Bros Kerfuffle or Super Smash Bros Fisticuffs.

Well fuck. Those titles suck.

I really don't understand why they didn't go with just "Super Smash Bros. 3DS/U"
The "U" thing seems to be a trend for most of Wii U games so it sounds perfect as a title.
"For 3DS/Wii U" sounds silly and the hideous font the chose for those is not helping at all.

It would be cool if they gave ya the option to listening to both the original and remixed track for almost all the songs (barring medleys and originals).

Because I don't think they can ever achieve a better remix of Super Mario Galaxies OST.

That's not far enough for me. They actually tried with the past game titles. These new titles just come off as trying to make the names as simple as possible for the casual audience.
