Valve announces SteamOS

They emphasize how the OS is made for living room machines, so introducing some hardware seems like the logical next step. In which case, the most someone like me can hope for is something comparable or better in specs and pricing to the new consoles. Then I would of course need incentive in the way of some type of exclusives and Half-Life 3, Portal 3, etc would most certainly seal the deal. If it ended up being a sweet enough offering, I would just go PS4 and Steambox this gen and forget all about the Xbox One.

NeoGAF will die forever when it is revealed that the living room box turns out to be the Playstation 4.
Yes, because it would create a paradox and the universe would end...

The whole idea is so stupid that it's not even worth entertaining the thought. What's the point? Valve gets 30%. Sony gets 30%. Neither company would give up their share, and they have absolutely no reason to share their revenue with the other. And pubs and developers certainly aren't interested in handing over 60% of their revenue to make both Sony and Valve happy.

Fixed that for you. The megaton to end all megatons. Iwata comes out with Gabe and simply says "Sorry for the firmware update delay, but we figured out a unified account system. To explain it, here's Gabe Newell."

This strikes me as about as reasonable as some dream alliance with Sony. As far as I can tell, people are just taking their favored system and dreaming about how amazingly super awesome it would be if [Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony] teamed up with Valve and created their personal dream super box, without any consideration for the underlying economics or logistics.

People keep mentioning having to build a secondary powerful pc to play games.

Doesn't the streaming option eliminate the need for second powerful pc? Can a little box be built for cheap to stream from my main system? Roku style

Pretty much this right here. If some alliance were ever to really happen, there would be leaks well out in advance. Obviously no one actually believes such a thing, I would hope.

Sure it can, and that's probably one of the hardware solutions that will be revealed in a couple of hours. but not everybody wants to only enjoy the streaming options, allot of us want to pull everything out of our expensive GPU's by running games on SteamOS naitivly

The SteamOS announcement is cool and all and i am excited but i dont want to have to purchase another device to use this SteamOS. Maybe I have it all wrong IDK. I was hoping to triple boot this OS with UBUNTU and Win7. I really hope they go this route.

True but the goal for Valve is to progressively get rid of that massive computer in your backroom. As time passes and more AAA games are released multiOS, you will have less and less incentive to keep that beast running in the background. But you will need to upgrade your SteamBox for that.

I get the sense at this point, that some people believe Sony is so pro-gamer that they are willing to allow a completely open Linux distro with full hardware control to run games on their machine, that is reportedly being sold at a loss, basically cutting themselves out completely.

Valve would love for SteamOS to be installable on the PS4 but I can't see how Sony benefits at all. It would be incredible for consumers because there is nothing Valve can release that will match the price/performance ratio. They don't have the resources to devote to that kind of R&D and I would hope that they are not willing to sell open hardware at a loss.

It's an OS. You should be able to install and dual/triple/whatever boot just like any other OS.

Yeah but why cant they have some little device that hooks into the hdmi port on your tv that streams from your pc to the tv?

It is primarily designed to be like Android for living room PC hardware manufacturers, i.e. Valve provides the software and leaves it up to everyone else to sell hardware that has Steam built in.

Nothing there, however, precludes the end-user from building their own box and installing SteamOS to it, or dual/multi booting it with other operating systems on their current PC. Take in mind, however, that the OS is designed for the living room so expect a 10 ft UI. No one knows for sure if there will also be a "desktop mode" for it, if that's your preferred way to play.

Gabe Newell has previously spoken about a $99 box that will do this. I vaguely remember him saying that, at some point in the future, he wanted the dumb terminal hardware (i.e. a box that just receives streamed video from a more powerful PC somewhere else in the house) to be so cheap that they could give it away for free.

Thanks for explaining that further. I have my rig hooked up to my tv right now and i hate it being in the living room so if Steam allows me to put it in the back room and still have the option to play it on my tv then im all for it I just dont want to have to spend billions of dollars to make that happen

Just read your reply

The problem with this is that a steam box isn't going to be any less expensive than a PC (ignoring cost of OS). Not to mention a steam box will have much less utility for that price.

If you can't afford a PC, you're not going to be able to afford a steam box either.

It won't be as expensive as a PC if Valve is manufacturing it themselves. Volumes of scale, no OS licensing fee and potentially being able to sell it at a loss and make it up with Steam profits should put it squarely in the console price range not gaming pc price range.

Has it already been floated out there that this hardware announcement may be some kind of Vita TV like device? The wording on the description for Steam OS seems pretty clear that it can do that.

"You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!"

So, they would need some kind of hardware to accept that signal from your PC, right?

I dont mind running all my games in the SteamOS as matter of fact I think its about time pc gaming gets its own OS just for gaming. If Steam makes it where a pretty good amount of my library is available through the OS with the obvious promise of more to come Im sold and will exclusively use the OS for what is intended. Of course like you mention its great to have options and not forced to choose

As long as it becomes easier to sleep and switch OSes on the fly, I approve of this. I'd prefer a more streamlined productivity environment and a more efficient gaming environment. Sounds win-win to me.

I'm fairly certain there was a "Steambox" thing being shown a few months ago or so that was basically a streaming box. I think most people assume that there will be multiple Steamboxes and on the low end it will basically be just for streaming while the high end options should be quite a bit more powerful.

What information are you basing this off of?

No one really knows but the issue I see here is standardization. You know a console will always be able to play any game made for it and it is optimized. Having multiple steam box configurations presents the same issue as regular PC gaming. You can get whatever the basic model is but in two years it's going to be left behind.

If there's really a "Steambox" coming, I wonder what the final name will be. Everyone assumes it's going to be called "Steambox" but that's just the common name that people on the Internet have standardized on for referring to its concept. It may actually be called that, but maybe Valve will surprise us.

As I've posted before, leaks have revealed that's how Valve is calling it internally as well. But of course there is a chance the final name will be different.

I think the Steambox will be something used to kick start the OS and later we might just have a set of standards that devs can work , enthusiasts will be able to tweak away while others will know they can put game X in Y and it'll work.

I still don't know why people are excited for the box , the OS is bigger news imho.

I am sure it has been said before but I just noticed it. Valve have made the "Steam Universe" Steam group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse

2136 members and growing. :)

This purple Steam Universe thingy really seems to be a thing they are trying to push. I mean they have given it a visual identity.

"Discussion about SteamOS, Beta Hardware, and Big Picture Mode."

So announcement #2 and/or #3 is going to be the Beta Hardware...

Not sure if anyone has noticed

The back button on the steamOS reveal page has changed from a circle that simply had a small "BACK" inside, to a curved arrow.

I'm guessing this is what we can expect some of steamOS to look like............ or i'm paying far too much attention for my own good
