Valve announces SteamOS

Lol. I can't believe they get annoyed at this. Half Life 2 and its episodes were a game without a conclusion and a major cliff hanger at the end of episode 2. It was also released nearly 7 years ago now, with not one peep from Valve about a follow up.

Everyone is going to think "half life 3", every minute, every announcement forever until Valve either says they aren't making the game, or they release the damn thing.
Yeah, it's like if Lucas waited till '97 to release Return of the Jedi and got annoyed at us being annoyed for him taking so fucking long.

Thankfully he didn't, because a couple years later we got

This announcement is bigger than the story of half life. Also HL3 will be done once valve has finished with Dota2 which will be never.

Muhahahahahaha we need superb villain veiger in this post to make this complete:

Looks like Nvidia is knee-deep in this: http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2013/09/25/steam-rolling-into-your-living-room/

Engineers from Valve and NVIDIA have spent a lot of time collaborating on a common goal for SteamOS: to deliver an open-platform gaming experience with superior performance and uncompromising visuals directly on the big screen.

NVIDIA engineers embedded at Valve collaborated on improving driver performance for OpenGL; optimizing performance on NVIDIA GPUs; and helping to port Valve’s award-winning content library to SteamOS; and tuning SteamOS to lower latency, or lag, between the controller and onscreen action.

The collaboration makes sense as both companies strongly believe in the importance of open-platform innovation, and both companies are committed to providing gamers with a cutting-edge visual experience.

Valve will deliver a great, open-platform gaming experience, and NVIDIA will continue to be the best choice for gaming on any open platform or operating system, including SteamOS.

They ought to be whether they're involved in the specific Valve hardware or not. If a lot of people are gaming on SteamOS, on PC, both nVidia and AMD should be making sure they've got good drivers etc. ready.

Apparently that seems to be the exact plan.

Both Nvidia and AMD are issuing Linux specific announcements today.

okay, i do not have powers to post a new thread yet so this seems the best place for it

controllers, can valve get it right?

wii-u, ps4, xbone... all failed to get one simple thing right

buttons/touch at the back of the controller... there is a reason that loads of people are paying top dollar for scuf controllers

granted... its mostly for fps enthusiasts, but it will also benefit other genres imo. the controller will literally sell consoles once people catch onto how it literally improves performance once u get to grips with it.

mad catz have toyed with the idea but it was badly implemented... im guessing/hoping they dont hold a patent for it tho, vita has touch stuff on the back, i was definately expecting sony to implement it into their controller.

im eagerly waiting for valve to show off their controller

If it's a Steambox, maybe they might offer it in a sense of $300 to $1000 for Steambox, but you can customize it however you like. But make it easy to open up and customize.

On the announcement page you can clearly see what they mean with the signs. The first one was just an O for OS. The 2nd announcement looks like a console/hardware. So probably steambox. The third one is 2 rounds with a + in the middle. Looks like a pair of glasses. So oculus rift

This is what I am hoping is the origin of their plan. I hope they aren't all willy nilly about it and throw some parameters around it.

The biggest problem is that you are missing the speed and accuracy of a mouse, and that cant be fixed with analog sticks

What is the oculus rift theory? That you'll be able to buy an oculus rift and use it on supported games? It doesn't seem like something they would use as their final bullet point to the week.

Apparently according to a gaffer Valve are working on their own VR goggles.

They could make (in addition to a more typical controller) some sort of lap-based mini-keyboard (just twelve to fifteen buttons) with trackball on one side. Wouldn't be useful for text input, but you could use it for Dota and RTSs at least.

The Wii U GamePad does have buttons on the back - the triggers. Triggers and bumpers are organized in such a way that you can comfortably rest your middle fingers on the triggers and the index fingers on the bumpers when playing dual analog games.

I'm not optimistic Valve can come up with anything really game changing here (I'm expecting either an accessory for people who already own a gaming PC, or just an expensive pre-built machine) but I am curious.

unlikely unless they make it a streaming device like the Vita.TV in which it compliments your PC

That is exactly what they are doing.

Multiple tiers of Steambox. Cheaper one for streaming, more expensive models for dedicated gaming.

The original intention was to make them open, upgradeable, and the ability to dualboot Windows if you desire.

Well, the lovely thing about a standardized Steambox would be the possibility for game designers to add Steambox presets to your graphics options.

I'm expecting the same type of reactions we got on Monday for the most part. Me thinks the 3rd announcement might be the one that could excite most people. Just a feeling.

If it is cheaper than the other next gen systems I will probably pick a steam box up..

I know next to nothing about PC gaming, but I wouldn't expect cheaper, just hoping for some sort of parity with the 'better' box. If SteamBox is relatively affordable and looks awesome even for a dupe like me, I'm canceling my XboxOne pre-order.

To add to the discussion what the last symbol means I think it is partnerships. Them announcing partners that are committed to release native apps for Steam OS would be huge.
