I don't think it should be implemented outside of small or special tournaments. Regionals or majors should just play straight up. Or run it as a side tournament if you want.

I'm surprised there's even this much uproar about it. I didn't think it was that serious. I don't think you could even assemble a governing body to agree and approve this across the board anyway.
 
ban the ban. it's like telling Tyson in the 80s "you can't use your right hand when boxing". it's stupid, just man up and take the L vs the better players.

edit: gonna make a thread about the 3D Mugen thing.
 
The thing about bans is suppose to handicap a player. Unless broken (ST Akuma) I would like players to use their real teams and play hard.
 
What's the theory behind bans in LoL/DotA?

In other news, canceling my pre-order for JP BlazBlue. It looks great but I think I'll put the cash elsewhere and wait for the US release.

Also, I want competitive Wonderful 101.

It's co-op only, but I think it's really great. My son and I spent the weekend playing it. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Typical Kamiya stuff, overcome the enemies and get rated on combos, time, damage taken, and continues. The puzzle elements to combat really shine in multiplayer, but Wonder-eyes Black's time bombs are really OP when you have one player bombing and the other doing damage. (Still, without the bombs we just couldn't get through some of the stuff.)

I don't know about general consensus but people were having a lot of fun with it at the Norcal Weekly. A lot of people were exposed as one trick ponies... even FChamp himself was looking like a fish out of water without his Magneto.

At the very least they admitted that it was a useful exercise in order for people to get better with their other characters and there was less auto pilot in lower brackets. A lot of new strategies had to be developed on the fly including new teams.

Now as far as it being adopted for general play... I don't think that will ever happen. Also even this ruleset needs more fine tuning because I think if they are doing one character ban that character should be banned for both players not just one player.

As far as LoL/DOTA ban goes, it was a bit different than what they did for the UMVC3 tournament. For the UMVC3 tournament they just had one ban per player and that only applied to one player (so if FChamp banned ShadyK's Vergil, he himself could still use Vergil if he wanted).

In a MOBA game, the banning is as follows (well I am just going to give the DOTA 2 format because that's the game I play). Team 1 bans first, other team bans 2 characters, Team 1 bans 4th character. Team 2 gets first pick. In MOBA games a character that is banned or picked is basically removed from play so even picks are very strategic because when you pick something the other player can't pick the same thing. This goes on until there are 10 bans and 10 picks. There's a ton of strategy involved in this drafting phase and it forces teams to be versatile in their playstyle, strategy and team picks.

The MOBA games are balanced around this drafting though... there's a whole mode called Captain's Pick where you do these banning. Even the order in which you ban and pick is how the game is balanced (just recently they changed it around to add more strategy to it).

Bans in moba are just part of the game. Its ways for people to learn more than 1-2 champions/heroes since the character roster in those games are huge. Dota and league have over a 100+.
 
Also because of the way picking is in those games... if it was all pick the team that has first pick will always have advantage because they can just pick the best hero first. You sort of need an organized drafting system when picking one character means it can't be picked again by the other player. This isn't an issue in fighting games because if there is a single best character in the game there is nothing stopping you from using it too and just have a mirror match between the two best characters. You can't do that in a MOBA game so you have to employ a drafting system.

If High Voltage does the PC port like they did MK9 I would definitely hold off for impressions. PC MK9 has lots of issues including busted online (de-syncs and just poor netcode overall).

I'm still in there Day 1 for PC, Vita and PS4 no matter what though.

Also I forgot to mention. You can get countered VERY hard without bans. Bans make things interesting in Mobas because the game is built around it, it makes character picks more important. Fighting games aren't built around bans though.
 
Yeah exactly.

The only way this would've been accepted in fighting games is if the game came with drafting mode as the default competitive mode. And of course this only works in team fighting games... banning in one character fighting game is not good at all.

It was a good experiment and from the sound of it they might try it again with a more elaborated ruleset. For those that were interested in how some of the matches were played out here's a little summary of some of the top players:

*There was a player SolidAbyss who had a Nova/Frank/Dante team which is supposed to be an excellent Frank team. People tried to ban his Nova but he picked Wolverine and the team was effectively the same... so he bodied those people. Then the better players figured out that you had to ban his Frank West and after that he didn't get to win because Frank was the soul of his teams.

*People tried banning PRRog's Vergil but he ripped through them hard with various Wolverine teams (Wolverine/Doom/Wesker, Wolverine/Doom/Akuma, Wolverine/Doom/Felicia). Then the better players figured out that you have to ban his Wolverine. He then defaulted to Spencer teams and he was clearly out of his elements, only won on match in losers bracket.

*FChamp played against a random who he didn't know what team he played so FChamp asked him his team. He was like "yeah I play Shuma" which was probably a bluff but FChamp banned it anyway. People sort of tried various bans against FChamp but soon figured out that he was held back the most when you banned his Magneto.

*ShadyK went through the entire tournament without getting his Vergil banned. Usually people tried to ban his Morrigan or Doom. Only FChamp banned his Vergil in grand finals and that grand finals was very good (too bad there was no commentary, it was just some randoms doing LoL commentary for UMVC3). Lots of teams used, counter picks and counter strategies. Came down to a final Dark Strider vs Dark Phoenix battle.

ShadyK's teams were the following: Morrigan banned: Magneto/Doom/Vergil. Doom banned: Morrigan/Vergil/Strider and Dante/Vergil/Strider. Vergil banned: Morrigan/Doom/Strider and Magneto/Doom/Dante.

FChamp's teams: Dorm/Morrigan/Phoenix, Hawkeye/Doom or Strange/Dormammu, Doom/Sentinel/Dormammu, Doom/Morrigan/Phoenix.

*Pretty much every player who used Zero there got their Zero banned and they folded pretty hard as expected.

*Apologyman, Drewgrimey and CJShowstopper conveniently didn't show up because people know that they would get exposed hard if you banned their main characters (CJ:Vergil, Drew: Strider, Apologyman: Piccolo).

*Vergil was the most banned character... some people banned Vergil even if they didn't know who they were playing against. Doom was the most played, people were very reticent about banning him. If there were people who played characters like Morrigan, Wolverine, Zero they were instantly banned. Dormammu, Magneto, Nova, Spencer were banned too. Shuma was the weirdest ban in the tournament. HiIamNasty got his Super Skrull banned twice and went 0-2.
 
Is WNF/the run bakc still showcasing DOA5U?

I hope after the TFC people see DOA5U is a great game to be shown at locals. I have no faith in mah east coast guys (Aside from Hubbs) to showcase this game. So West coast don't let me down.

Just thought of something about FG's on PC. Would a Steambox be sufficient to solve the differing systems problem?

Do any non-Steam PC FG's run on Linux such as Melty?

I can't think of the last time there was a Linux port for a fighting game, but most work fine under Wine, including Melty Blood, Skullgirls, and so on. That's not an ideal option, though.

Valve don't seem to be making a "Steambox," but, as they said, "Steam Machines" which will be (potentially) made by a variety of manufacturers with a variety of specifications. They won't be any more of a 1:1 replacement for a console's functionality and use-cases than a PC running Steam currently is.
