Beyond: Two Souls- demo impressions - now publicly available

I changed my preorder to there a little while ago mainly because it's not any extra $ (aside from s/h). Normally I'd rather Newegg (credit) or Amazon (launch day delivery)... but I'm busy that week so I can wait, and get a nicer box, I guess :)

BEYOND: Two Souls Special Edition
(GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE)

Exclusive Steelbook Premium Packaging
Extensive Behind The Scenes Video Features
Soundtrack
Dynamic PS3 Theme
PSN Avatar Pack
GameStop exclusive 30-minute playable additional scene DLC

that's weird, the futureshop (same thing as bestbuy) near my house is listing special edition on the site.

It's a pretty interesting game, and by interesting I mean I couldn't hear or see any of the dialogue because my roommates were blinding me with laugh tears
Day 1 rent

Damn... I wish I saved my $60 of GTA5 money. Hopefully, it'll drop in price a littl ebit so I can afford it faster.

The Aiden control was strange but, I can see getting used to it very quickly especially the flow and all. It's very difficult to tell what you are and are not controlling sometimes. And the slow motions seems like I just need some practice.

I love Sony consoles. It's the PS3's final hour and I've already picked up 2 titles with another 3 on the way.
Ni No Kuni for $20, The Puppeteer, and Beyond. I need to save money for the PS4.

Yeah I didn't know there were black bars until I came into this thread. I'll just go ahead and attribute that to my TV's fantastic blacks. /sarcasm

Replayed the demo. It definitely doesn't seem like you can lose.

you can't lost in any video game.

i consider parts like being bit by the dogs and getting caught to be losing, except they've cleverly added ways for you to get out of that (extra scenes) instead of just going 'game over restart at checkpoint'.

But you see losing in Heavy Rain led to main characters dying or altering the storyline in significant ways. Hope there are atleast some variation to story progression depending on choices in this.

I'm playing through Hunted for a second time and love it! So good and now have a really good grasp of the controls. I've got the Gamestop version preordered, but if they announce a Dogital Day 1 Version I'll go with that.

Might have to buy a new DS3 to play this game. For the life of me I can't seem to get the damned Sixaxis control prompts during the train section to respond.

and the camerawork is crazy good.
Disagree with this. The camera when you're running about in the forest is terrible, the way it swings around you when you try to run in a different direction. That definitely needs work.

This seems to be one of those games where first time around you're going 'wtf?' then next time around you understand what's meant to happen and you do a lot better.

The game had bad writting or logic flaw in some scenes (police chase ones to be exact) the police keeps shooting to kill elen in some scenes, then in some scenes they're like stop fire stop fire give up, then shoot to kill again i was like wtf make your mind already.
Nah only the local cops are shooting to kill. SWAT just wants to capture her, although later they will fire against their orders because they are desperate.

In Heavy Rain characters could die, that's a difference.
Pretty sure Jodie will be able to die as well. They said as much. It won't happen in the first 33% of the game though, similar to Heavy Rain. There are 23 endings.

Is anybody else as thrown off by the Aiden thing like I am? I literally took out an entire army. AN ENTIRE FREAKING ARMY. I'm basically invincible. I'm never going to believe in a situation where Aiden doesn't help me. I can't. It won't make sense. How can I care about the protagonist when I know she's invincible?
She's not. When she sleeps, gets knocked out or is drugged Aiden will be very weak and can't help her. Also Aiden's powers get stronger once Jodie becomes an adult. The hunted scene takes place at the end of the timeline, so in pretty much every other scene Aiden won't be as powerful as he is in this scene.

There has to be if there are multiple endings.

Did they say of Jodie is going to be the only person in this game / world with a two souls?
Who knows?

Fortunately it was way worse before. In the alpha version the camera swayed around like crazy constantly and it got stuck behind trees every 5 seconds. I think it's alright now.

Just played the demo. I'm sold.

Black bars didn't bother me, the game wouldn't have as good a framerate if it filled the whole screen.

I played the
dog
-scene for a third time. Nope, it's always the same. You always win. I put the controller away and did nothing. Of course you get
caught by the cops.
but that's it.

I loved it. As a video game student, I like the way Cage brings you to deal with the cutscenes. It keeps the player on their toes. I especially loved the settings, the lighting and the overall presentation. It is a much more improvement over Heavy Rain (and I loved this game too).

The only issue I had with the demo (and maybe something just fucked up during the installation or the package was somehow corrupted when I downloaded the demo), but near the end of the Hunted section, I don't get to see some of the special lighting and particle effects, ie the lens flare, the explosion at the gas station. The only thing I see are those black boxes, broken images link all over the place and unfortunately, this was the only moment in the game where the visuals "fucked up".

Anyone else had similar problems?

We'll agree to disagree. I could see where I was going just fine, though I did have a bit of a braincramp when it came time to scale the rock wall, but that was my fault, not the camera.

I love the way it sways, feels very handicam-ish and feels like I'm playing a cutscene. I loved it.

I loved it! The story is original, the acting is good, the graphics are good, I like the relationship between Jodie and Aiden (I want to know more about them and their lives), and there's no unnecessary bullshit in the gameplay. I'm super excited for this game and I can't wait to play it!

This is the first game I'm really interested in this year.

So you loose. Getting arrested equals failure to me, no matter how brief it is. If she gets permanently captured the game would be over, so that doesn't make much sense. I hate game-overs in games like this (TWD was terrible in this aspect), so this approach is perfect for me. I hope you didn't expect real branching paths in the first 33% of the game, that will come into play later.

Any word on when the demo releases to everyone? Didn't have a Facebook account, didn't get a code.

Platinumed HR, loved Fahrenheit- but not so much for Cage's writing. The little vignettes work wonders.

US - October 1st
Rest - October 2nd

One week before release. And I agree, the individual scenes are the best. I like the mundane stuff especially, Cage is untouchable at those.

You do in Heavy Rain. Everyone can die.

The player's failures lead to their death. In Beyond demo's case, failure only leads to a variation to the next scene.

The same is true for Heavy Rain. Characters can only die once you reach the 66% waymark. The same is likely true for Beyond, since there are at least 15 endings.

Awesome- thanks for the info!

The mundane bits are always my favorite as well- walking about in an empty apartment, interacting with different objects in a store aisle, creating your own scene with the situation provided. I just like walking about with Cage's characters, and hearing their thoughts!

I didn't enjoy Heavy Rain. Not because it is mainly an interactive story (no, I am not going for the "It is not a game!" angle), not because there were "too many QTEs", but because the writing and acting were relatively uninteresting to me.

This however seems very, very good in terms of story and acting. I mean it really is a pretty darn unique story for any medium is it not?
An entity that is linked to you, that can move around and interact with objects, that you nor anyone else understands
is not something I have come across previously.

If done well the story could go to great places, which they did already do here, I really liked
the scientists investigating the phenomena, because that is exactly what would happen if something like this was discovered, and it wasn't the stereotypical evil or idiot scientists that you always seem to see either.

Anyway, I am rambling, but bottom line is that I am very interested in this game, might even become my GOTY, which I did not see being overtaken by anything after TLOU.

I played through Hunted a Second time and it feels great to hot every single prompt correctly. Now I wanna play through again and get taken in by the cops.

Holy shit I came away super impressed by this. Graphically it is beautiful for PS3. Wish Heavy Rain looked this good because as impressive as the technical aspects are, I think I like the tone of HR more, so far. However, in terms of story, what I played pulled me in and I liked it more than I thought. So there's potential for this to surpass HR. As an adventure fan I don't mind the minimal control stuff, it seems intuitive and not obtrusive.

Shit I am really excited for this game now. The motion capture and voice acting is light years ahead of HR. There's so much to be happy about here. The Aiden gameplay is fun, feels like a simpler Ghost Trick or whatever.

I'm all in for this one. Another ride on Cage's train.

I liked the moments where you detach from Jodie and can eavesdrop on conversations involving other characters. That and the uneasy relationship between the two. Although symbiotic, it feels parasitic because Jodie seems to resent Aiden even as she relies on him. I like that his thoughts aren't subtitled and you can only guess as to what he's saying by observing Jodie's reaction to him.

The mocap is stellar. To be able to read little Jodie's emotions through her eyes and the tiny twitches in her face without her ever speaking a word are fantastic. Because of the aforementioned, the implications for the story are looking to be far grander than HR ever was, especially on a micro scale

Yeah, just saying for the demo.

I was trying to find a way to get through the game without killing anyone. It doesn't seem likely. The only part I hated about Heavy Rain was that car river scene where the game indicates you to do an action, but that action leads to a character's death when you wanted her saved.

I really don't like unintended actions, but I think I felt like I had to protect Jodie and kill all the swat guys. Maybe that's what the vision was for that last scene.

Loved the demo. Put in a pre-order at gamestop as soon as I finished.

so the player is aiden, and the only way the player can communicate with jodie is through knocking things over or helping her with no words, a la journey? very interesting.

Do you have any other games that use motion controls that you can try out and make sure its the controller?

Unfortunately I do not. But as I've dropped my current DS3 on the ground multiple times in the past, I've got no doubts that the motion sensor inside has to be damage. Perhaps controller damage might explain why my PS3 double beeps and the power light flashes red whenever I turn it on with the controller.

It definitely was. She hasn't slept for 3 days, is on the run since weeks, has seen and done terrible things and was pretty much abused and unhappy for her entire life. She is REALLY fucking pissed in that scene and just wants to be alone and rest. So she really wants to kill them at the end.

But, as you know, you don't have to as Aiden and can let her get arrested instead without killing anyone. At the end you have to kill the one SWAT guy though to get free, but I think this is the only forced casualty in the entire scene.

For the player? yes. But Aiden itself has a personality as well and in fact he can talk to her. But it is gibberish and you can't understand it besides listening to her reaction to figure out what he said.

That's a huge bummer. Why would they regress after Heavy Rain? I liked that failing a QTE changed the outcome of said event...was a fantastic idea and one I had hoped to see them build upon in Beyond.

This still happens. He means you can't get a game over or end the game permanently. It works exactly as Heavy Rain.
