Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

Pichu was in Melee, and Plusle & Minun were planned for Brawl. (And because someone's probably going to bring it up, "pra_mai" doesn't mean "random.")
And yet Lucario, and even Jigglypuff were prioritized above Plusle and Minun. Pichu was probably not even concepted for Brawl, there isn't anything mentioning him.

In the scope of Pokemon, I don't see Gen 3 being that important to the series. DP was huge, the first online Pokemon, the splitting move attributes away from specific types, hugely popular Pokemon like Lucario and Munchlax, I don't see anything like that from Gen 3, or even Gen 2. 5 kind of falls in the same place for me, there seems to be a lot more hype around 6 than 5. I think 5 came really late in the DS' life, and some of the designs were... iffy.

And there's no real point in going back to Gen 2/3/5 now for characters unless it's for stuff related to XY, like Blaziken.

Wow, this was such an unexpected surprise! I absolutely loved Toon Link in brawl! Although after thinking about it I do have some mixed emotions with his reveal.

Now I worry that instead of combining the best of both link and toon link into normal link for the new smash normal link will still be bottom tier and useless again - :(

It's much too early to tell and with sakurai tinkering with a lot of other characters I really hope he gets some unique moves to differentiate him from link. Even just altering all his A moves like they did in project M made him feel a lot more unique so something like that would be fine with me; plus a new final smash.

Gen 3 had a fairly big impact as well. It did introduce double battles which have essentially become the default battle mode for pokemon tournaments. I agree with you though that there is essentially no chance we see a pokemon from gen 3.

I just hope we get to keep pokemon trainer. If anything it makes me wish for a game where there were heaps of pokemon given this sort of treatment to play with.

The texture on Link's tunic is so good

Also I'm just imagining Toon Link standing on Skyloft, using the WW to fuck with the loftwings.

:o

another character so soon? Pretty cool. Yep I think there is a probable correlation between some games releases and character reveals.

Which means we can probably expect a Pokemon around Oct. 12th, Zelda or Ganondorf around Nov. 22nd (Mario 3D World and Link between Worlds both come out, all Mario Veterans have been revealed) and Diddy Kong near Dec 6th.

Yea I agree, it's not an exact projection but it gives us a feel of what characters we might see in the future. Hopefully he'll throw a newcomer into the mix sometime soon.

Being the royal princess she is, Peach has held this in since 1985.

lol every picture with Peach is priceless

Why? Not that I think he is in. But why wouldn't he?

Well, Ryce already explained most of it and If you have Wonder Red by himself then he can't really represent the game very well since the game is all about merging people into powerful attacks.

Dunno, with Brawl it was pretty obvious he kept hidden characters a secret until launch. But this time it's like he threw a curveball.

Right, so that's why I suspected that Toon Link is starter characters and Toon Zelda will be secret characters instead.

Someone help me out but did I recalled that Sakurai said that Luigi might be remain as secret character?

I'm of the opinion that just because Sakurai's revealing some characters to tie into a marketing push for various games doesn't mean those characters, formerly secret, now are starters.

In fact, I'd be surprised if he isn't sitting on some secret characters that haven't been in any prior Smash games, and doesn't show them off at all until the game's been out for a bit. Luigi, Toon Link et al are fair game since they're veterans.

That's not how choosing to buy consoles or games work...

I hope you weren't an early 3DS adopter.

No, I bought it after the drop.

Also, Wii U has next to zero games I want to play, whereas the 3DS is loaded with games.

Before you ask, no, I do not care for Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong or anything else other than Mario Kart 8.

I really hope the Wii U version will sell more...

Fat chance with the install base on the 3DS verse Wii U.

The 3DS version will likely sell 2x the amount of the Wii U version.

I'd say the best thing about this update is that characters can appear multiple times as different characters. ST Link appears in a stage AND Toon Link is playable. Playable characters could possibly appear in the background when they're chosen.
Or not.

I expected Toon Link to come back, but I can't honestly say I'm excited since none of my favorite characters have yet to be announced.

On the plus side, his reveal basically derails the notion that Ridley doesn't have a chance of being playable if Other M Ridley appears in the Pyrosphere.

Myeeeeeeeeeeeeees. It's all coming together.

I.. actually don't know, actually. Usually I would agree but, maybe its just me. I know people who do not give a shit about a 3ds who just want to play smash bros. Like smash bros is the only nintendo game they play.

that may change, since the wii u is a failure.

Are you hoping for that so you can have your precious Ridley? :P

Most likely, no. My best guess is Sakurai is showing off veterans, regardless of their status in the game, in similar fashion to Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog.

I hope not, in Brawl it was kinda weird to unlock characters that you knew were in for years. I hope he has some surprise unlockables at least.

It's so frustrating that Toon Link is fine to put in, but Mewtwo was removed because Lucario "replaced" him, even though they're substantially different characters (was that ever confirmed?).

I don't remember if Brawl held any back before it's release. It's been a while. I feel like all the characters were revealed on the DOJO beforehand, and there really weren't any surprises.

Surprised you own a 3DS then.

So, since Toon Link shows up in both the Spirit Tracks stage and as a playable character, does that mean that Ridley won't be deconfirmed even if he is a stage hazard in the Pyrosphere?

They can always replace the Link that appears in the stage with another character. It's not unheard of in fighting games, Tron Bonne appearing on the MML stage in UMvC3 for example.

People counted Toon Link out too early, but even if he is a "clone" character he's absolutely worth a spot on the roster, even if I also wish they would differentiate him a bit more from vanilla Link.

Since Toon Link brings back the idea of revealing characters on related release dates, I'm kind of worried Wonder Red won't happen since his game has come and gone. :(
I'm pretty confident that Wonder-Red isn't gonna happen, sorry. The character and franchise just isn't important enough to Nintendo. Besides, I doubt they'd put just Wonder-Red in by himself. If a character from The Wonderful 101 was to be included, I'd think they'd have to make it be "The Wonderful 100" or just "Wonderful Ones" with at least the 7 main Wonderful Ones. Otherwise Unite Morphs wouldn't be possible, and having a character from The Wonderful 101 without Unite Morphs would just be silly. But I can't imagine them having 7+ character models together as a single character, especially not in the 3DS version. It's not gonna happen. =/

Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely LOVING The Wonderful 101 right now, and I can imagine a Smash Bros. character representing the game would be AMAZING, but times just not really that plausible. The Wonderful 101 isn't that important to Nintendo in the grand scheme of things, and there would be too many complications with getting the character to work right as it should.

I just want Meowth. It's near impossible now considering most of Smash's Pokemon reps are from Gen 1.

If we do get another Pokemon from Gen 1, it's gonna end up being Mewtwo. I don't mind it much, but it's kinda sad Meowth has been planned since as early as Smash 64 and will probably never show up in Smash as a playable character.

Sweet, my secondary main was confirmed! Now just declone him a little bit. Maybe give him the Deku Leaf and the Skull Hammer, and change his grounded spin attack to the hurricane spin attack and he'll be golden.
