Week of September 30th to October 6th, 2013.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

i know youre being sarcastic but i really feel the fgc is dying tbh.
Weeklies(WNF/TRB, NLBC) has been getting lesser viewers...i remember when Big Two had like 8k viewers, now its only 3-4k viewers
The recent exhibitions have been a lot more interesting than the weeklies and some of the majors as well recently. For me at least.

Stream viewership doesn't determine the strength of the FGC. In my opinion, what really matters is the strength of local communities and the numbers at local events.

No big rivalries, Arcsys games release dates in the USA are terrible, people are getting bored of the current meta, etc. It still boggles my mind that TRB/WNF still gets 40+ people for AE and Marvel. No idea on NLBC numbers. The local monthly in my city is staying solid with 18 people for AE and 20+ for Marvel. So there's nothing really going on in stream land but in locals, people are still going hard.

Views aren't as important as attendance and the pass couple of battle circuits had low attendance

They are probably getting less viewers because they are boring to watch. That is an issue for those weeklies to address if they want, not an indication of the health of the fgc.

EVO was not too long ago and had record numbers.

In the case of NLBC the numbers last week were very bad. Though I agree the presentation of seeing the same people playing weekly is getting a bit stale.

Aw man, I didn't know I had to pay 8.95 to watch the archives of Canada Cup.... That what I get for playing with the kids and making dinner.

FGC dead to me (at least Canada Cup). Will Canada Cup at least put it on youtube?

I was hype on some DeeJay and hype I can post in the FGC threads. No more lurking :)
Welcome to GAF! Console Wars are available to your left and enlightening is available to your right.

Recent majors have been pulling a lot. Canada Cup just did 20k. Sp00ky always traveling has hurt NLBC, but generally Next Level viewers fluctuate a LOT. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen it as low as 4k.

But like as said before attendance has been bad for battle circuit for a couple of weeks

Same deal with attendance. It seems everybody was off playing GTA5 so maybe they could have had a GTA5 competition? 5 minutes per player to pull off the funniest or most outrageous stunt on the stream to win a copy of the game?

It may be counter-intuitive to promote fighting game events with non-fighting games, but everybody will be bored with GTA5 in a week and looking to get back into it. Meanwhile adding fun things like that will help attract those who have hit their ceiling and are just getting bodied week after week.

Not really, GTA Online comes out in 2 days.

RIP NLBC.

EDIT: Attendance goes up and down too. About half a year ago you'd see NLBCs where 15 people show up for AE. Keep in mind they're running multiple games now too, 3-4 at least every week.

Guys you forgot the most important event coming up related to the FGC...

The release of Killer Instinct. It will reinvigorate the FGC.. taking it into a new era of E SPORTS.

That's the real issue. The games are stale right now. Nothing new out right now except for DOA5, which really isn't very spectator friendly.

Marvel in particular seems stale right now, AE a bit less so, but folks are just waiting for Ultra.

Folks don't like it when they're not able to play the latest version of a game (even if that latest version isn't coming out for months)

Curious- has TTT2 kept its numbers pretty well- that's a game I imagined would keep its viewers for the most part.

FGC basically needs a game to get everyone excited again. I think that game is Xrd, but it might be Killer Instinct if they learn from the mistakes of Netherrealm.Though right now I think there is too much uncertainty surrounding the game for it to really pop off like that, and being on a platform that's marketing thus far has been "approach with caution" doesn't help either.

Meanwhile I've been wondering how I'm going to manage playing all of these fighting games. SF4, Chaos Code, BBCP in less than a month, US Aquapazza in November, +R whenever Aksys gets that out... I know people who are interested in learning Melty Blood with me as well.

Edit: Also UNIEL port FB plz ;_;

I don't think it's possible for KI to be that game. Not going to get any benefit of the doubt, and I just don't trust Double Helix to make it perfect, which is what it would take.

USF4 will be the next big game, provided they make big changes. Xrd will be pretty big as well, but that's a long way off.

I think Persona will help a bit as well when/if it comes out on console.

Xrd's probably the best shot right now in my eyes. Mostly because of being on current and next gen, and that GG appeals to more than just one part of the FGC. Capcom players are going to be hungry for something new too which helps.

ASW just better not screw this up and have late localizations though.

This generation of fighting game players and viewers are just too used to new updates/revisions/expansions/DLCs now that if you go two years without any change things start to get "stale". Everyone wants to stay in the phase of discovery, not in the phase of optimization which is in fact boring to watch for most people.

As a fan of UMVC3, the latest tournament with its top 8 had a lot of new stuff to see and some great matches (well except the Bee chokes those were hard to watch)... far from being stale. The problem with that game is not even the game itself.. it's that two players have gotten so ahead of the competition that we have gotten the same grand finals a few times in a row. Until we get like 8 people at that caliber playing the game will just be those few players dominating. In AE though there are just a ton more players who are at that absurdly high level who can take big wins so even if they are using Cammy/Fei/Akuma etc. its still exciting because the result is hard to predict.

What is scaring me about USF4 is the lack of info coming from Capcom. I thought we might hear something about it at TGS but seems like we have to wait till Capcom Cup.

But I was told that it's because SF4 is "random". lol

I think Persona will help a bit as well when/if it comes out on console.

I'm still pretty sure the November persona announcement will be the console version.

I think people just want to feel like they have a chance of winning. Early in a game's life you can kind of delude yourself that you will keep getting better and can compete but that only lasts for so long. Majors and weeklies should mix things up to reflect this (although I don't think we are at that point yet).

Remember guys, when new games were coming out every few months in the last couple of years, people were complaining about the market being too saturated and too many games being dead on arrival (not just DOA) because nobody could be bothered to put the time in.

How we get a gap in releases and all of a sudden the world's over

But I was told that it's because SF4 is "random". lol
Not this shit again...

Anyway people are more concerned about "Match Up Fighter" or "Set Up Fighter" than it being random or whatever the fuck. I guess that stuff is changing with Ultra so there's that to look forward to. People are going to tolerate whatever shit happens in AE mostly because "oh well, at least Ultra is coming". Other games don't have that luxury so people are likely to quit playing/watching them.
