Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

I am sorry, but what is the point of having off screen Wii gaming if you still have to use the wiimote? I am not pointing the wiimote at that small screen.

at least they are giving us the option to play wii game off screen...

So you still need to use a Wiimote? Meeeeeeh, don't really see the point then... Couldn't you have just mapped the pointer to the second stick? Wouldn't have been perfect by ANY means, but damn, would have been better than what we're apparently getting.

What? No. Am I going to prop up the Gamepad in its cradle on my knees and waggle at it with my Wiimote and Numbchuk while I take a dump? You have to be able to control games with the Gamepad itself, right?

I was just asking. It sounds like a hassle.

if you wanted to wii sports, yea, it is a hassle. the games where you can control while resting your hands (which are the ones that people would care about anyways) wouldn't require much more work to someone with a setup wii u besides having to rest the controller while playing.

I don't see why it wouldn't.

Hopefully they map in some kind of way to play games like Galaxy and DKCR. That might require a patch. I guess we'll know it mere minutes.

MERE MINUTES!

Yea I see no reason why games that support CC or GC controllers cant be mapped to the gamepad I can understand games with Wii mote only controls

I honestly won't mind using a controller at all. I'm really hoping they'll add support for the Gamepad buttons at some point, but I almost always use the classic controller anyway.

Looks like that second stand is going to start getting some use!

I imagine the reason for no gamepad controls for off tv wii play is because you can't make motion controls work with a control stick and buttons :U

now all they need to do is have the gamepad "pretend" its a classic controller in Wii mode. Can't be that difficult right? right?

Yeah, I agree too it has to be the next step. The thing is though not all games have an option to play with a gamepad, and might default to the wrong controller you want to play with. I think it'll have to be an option in another update where you can choose to play with Wii Mote or GamePad based on your game of choice and can switch if necessary with the home menu.

Granted though being able to play SSBB online in bed/throne room would be one HELL of a gamechanger.

I don't know about you guys, but I was hoping that this update will be useless....so I'm satisfied. Nintendo finally delivered.

Megaton. This is amazing.

It is? With most Wii games using the Wii Remote I'd say it's not *that* amazing.

EDIT: So it doesn't support GamePad controllers? That'd be Nintendo alright.

BTW: It's updating here (slowly even though I'm on 100MBit fibre) in New Zealand (and losing connection during the process of course)

Wii games are so entwined with the wiimote I'm finding it odd people thought they could bypass all motion controls and use the gamepad.

As I read more and more I see it was a common expectation.

Gah. Should've made it so it could work as a Classic Controller for games that have that feature. Xenoblade and The Last Story off tv with the gamepad was oh so close.

It's a step. At least having Wii Mode on the Gamepad will eventually lead to Wii controls on the Gamepad.

Repeating (I just assumed this was obvious) - Wii games still require a Wii controller (Wii Mote etc) to function. Only the image is played on the game pad - you can't use it to control the games directly.

-USB Keyboard
-Wii Off TV Play (still requires Wii Motes!)
-Surround Sound support for Wii games (Dolby Pro Logic II)
-Access Friend's List from Wii U menu directly
-Upload screens taken when pausing the game directly to blogs and forums using the browser.
-Option to receive automatically downloaded software from Nintendo.
-Wii U Chat via headset connected to the Game Pad
-View PDFs on the Browser.

"-Upload screens taken when pausing the game directly to blogs and forums using the browser."
Am I the only one that is more HYPED by this than Wii Off-Tv?
Also for keyboard and PDFs!? O_O
OMG... PDFs!

Not every game, but I see what you're saying. If it was set up to emulate the controller pro though that might be more understandable and would moderate expectations. Uh... maybe.

Many, MANY games don't require pointer controls. It's very natural to assume they would have allowed Gamepad to act as the controller for all the games that don't.

Given that they're not adverse to hacking through Wii mode video display to the gamepad, I am really surprised there's not classic controller emulation mapping for the buttons on the Wii U gamepad.

Sure, you cannot change Wii games that require a wii remote, but *plenty* of Wii games have CC and CC Pro support and can be played entirely with those.

I didn't expect all but I did think that games without motion+ and pointer controls should have been given the option. It would take massive amounts of work for Nintendo to filter through which games would need what controls though so this is the reasonable solution.

Well it was amazing. Now it's just cool once I realized it needs Wii-motes. Oh well. Games like Xenoblade and Galaxy don't really require you to be pointing at the screen.

I so would have finally opened my copy of The Last Story if I could play it on the Gamepad. I understand motion control games wouldn't work, but ones that supported the Classic or GCN controller would work just fine, I'd assume those would be fine. Oh well, maybe next time....
