Maybe this isn't the right thread for this question, but whatever.

I haven't played a Pokemon game since Red/Blue/Yellow, and I'm kinda tempted to pick X or Y up to breathe some new life into my 3ds. The biggest thing holding me back is the fear that there is over a decade of gameplay mechanics which I'll have to catch up on. Not to mention that there seems to be 9012354 different Pokemon now.

Basically, the game seems too big for me to jump into. Is that the case? Can a Pokemon virgin (or nearly one, in my case) pick it up and start playing?

Easily. There's been a lot of changes since RBY (new types attacks, abilities, etc), but the essential mechanics are still the same. 4 moves, six Pokemon, 8 gym badges. Games generally explain stuff well enough that you can learn the mechanics as you play.

Yeah the easiest thing to do in equivalent is catch all the region specific Pokemon, catching all... what, 700+ at count Pokemon now involves a load of ball-aching with system transfers, older games, and multiple systems.

Mine has Serene Grace. I'll teach it Roost, but's it's moveset sucks right now since I'm in the beginning of the game. Rage or rollout basically,
