Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I havent seen the Jaleco logo on something new in so long...

By the way, does anyone actually use controllable speed mod settings for ships (not power ups)? Many games have them, but I dont think i've ever used anything but the default speed when playing, and thats usually good enough for me.

Got a new PCB today for my Astro City cabinet - Batsugun!

I've been avoiding playing this game on the Saturn for a LONG time because I wanted to play it first when I found the arcade board -

Loving it so far - I'm a big fan of Toaplan, and this seems up there with Dogyuun as one of my favorite Toaplan shooters.

I probably should play it some more before making a statement like that, but this game's XP system and the phenomenal art direction have me hooked. Also appreciate the short levels - especially after playing a lot of Tatsujin Oh (Truxton 2) for the last few weeks.

Nice, Batsugun is one of my all time favorites. Great pick up.

"@TreasureCoLtd: Some good news about "Ikaruga" before long. Well, I'll tweet again when the time comes."

Oh god. It is probably nothing. I don't want to start hoping for an Ikaruga sequel on Wii U but now that it's in my head, I can't stop.

The arcade port could potentially be setting the way for a sequel. I thought it was an odd porting choice at first, but it could be strategic. A sequel would be huge fucking news.

Personally though since this was tweeted in English, I would anticipate something like a port of the first game to PS4, Xbox1 etc.. i.e. a machine that's out overseas.

Rawrgh!

Was on a roll in Mamorokun and then my PS3 just froze out of nowhere. Speaking of which, is it better to just blitz through the stages so you have enough time to see the true final stage, or do the extra boss missions help with more time?

Sounds like you're playing arcade mode. The Extra boss missions give you a good bit of time back so yeah you should definitely play them. It takes awhile to get used to the harder bosses, but if you work on the challenge mode at the same time that has a lot of missions with both versions of the bosses so it can be good practice.

When I play arcade mode, I generally don't dally a whole lot in any of the stages. I also pretty much time attack the first stage because the rank is so low that you won't earn big chains yet. So the time I save on the first stage is useful for the rest of the game.

So the higher the difficulty rank, the higher the chains you can achieve? I thought they just gave enemies more life.

Yeah because on higher rank enemies shoot more bullets, hence more stars when you destroy them. Also some of the generators on for instance the castle stage will spit out mountains of enemies.

Castle stage is in general the biggest scoring opportunity in the game, so it's wise to leave it for last.

Sine Mora iOS controls sure are shitty, damn.
Also, why the hell inverted controls are only for relative touch and I can't move the layout around?
That being said, it looks incredible. Got it at half price, always supporting shmups on iOS.

If I start hearing about Caladrius AC being a better and tougher game than the original and it gets a 360 patch/DLC I'll probably have to pick it up. I was really on the fence about the initial release.

Actually, I'd like to know that too.

Aside from Caladrius, any other worthwhile AFFORDABLE shooters exclusive to Japanese 360s?

how much are j360's these days? where's the best place to get one?

Safe bet is $275 for a 4GB and $350 for one with a harddrive (if importing). Best route is to go through Amazon.co.jp with a forwarder.

Though, Japan is in transition and has already moved on to the new updated version wiht HDMI only. Same price for importers...though there are a couple of new models that come with included games (Halo and stuff like that) for the same price.

Also, there are a lot of folks who have been dumping their J-360 on the forums. Check places like shmups and neo-geo. A lot of times they are listed for sub-$200. But, taking your chances with any used 360, of course.

Medium-priced, but Mushi HD is the the reason to pretty much own a J-360 now. All the other titles are kinda extra.

Finally moved into a much larger apartment, looking to finally get myself a candy cab in here and start some PCB madness.

First step is finding an actual cab to begin with, though. Anything even from the next two provinces over is proving troublesome. Need a good place to look.

Probably gonna wait for next gen to roll out before i buy a J360 then. Thanks!
Same, they have to be cheap at some point right?

Btw, is the soundtrack for DDP Daifukkatsu different than the Black Label version? At the moment I'm obsessed with DDP Daifukkatsu Black Lab's OST. So fucking good.

I guess ask around on forums where a bunch of members are likely to have cabs. I got mine over on Shmups, I imagine SRK has a bunch (can't say I'm too familiar with there though), Arcade Otaku is pretty much all about candy cabs, and I'd guess guys on the Neo-Geo forums have a decent amount too. There's also people that import and ship cabs around, one of those guys might work for you if you can't find someone locally.

Thanks for the heads up, man. I appreciate the suggestions. System11 was where I was browsing, but not a lot of Canadians in threads there. I will try some of the others too.

Thanks again :)

Installed the Batsugun Special EPROM on my PCB - makes an already great game amazing!

The color palette changes are nice - but the difficulty ramp is what makes this game a lot better. Things don't get too challenging until the middle of the 4th stage, but it's a steady progression in difficulty and makes it more approachable for non-shooter players.

My favorite addition is the plethora of secret PIGS! There were pigs before - but now we get 30x more pigs! And different pigs to boot! Regular pigs give you points, while hovering over red pigs will fill up your XP meter.

Pigs are great.

There's a shield, bigger bomb and other stuff I'm most likely missing, but this upgrade is worth it's weight in pigs for sure.

P.S. Is it just me, or did Special add your character's sticking an oversized thumbs-up out of his ship during a bomb?

... oh hey. It's nifty that this thread exists.
Of course it would be popular right now, what with Ikaruga appearing on Greenlight.

..... I don't suppose anyone here is a fan of Touhou?
