Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

First, no. Borderline answer tho.
Second: Sonic Wings Special, although Sonic Wings 2 (Aero Fighters 2) is much better IMO. Still, both are better than SW3.

tHANKS obviously SW Special is Sonic Wings 1-3 so I'll give them all a play once I get it off US PSN.

For that matter, how would you describe Shienryu?

I didn't dig Satazius much. It was like a really cheap R Type. Cheap in the "cheap death" sense btw, not production values.

I bought Raiden Legacy recently when it was on sale at GOG. Whoever it was that was complaining about it here: You're absolutely right, it's shit. The emulation's crappy, the menus are crappy and stupid, it runs like shit and I ran into quite a few bugs in the 30 minutes I played it.
I'm just sad that this is basically the only way to play these games for me.

Do you have a phone? They have been released for iOS and (I think android). Probably the same issues but since they are small and for touch they seem very playable and cheap.

so is a free copy of Satazius still up for grabs?
If The End doesn't hook you up and you're still interested, PM me. I also have an extra Steam key of this from the recent Indie Gala bundle.

Will probably just dump it in the thread via ModBot if you've already got it.

Yeah I'm the one with the crusade against Legacy. It's especially frustrating to me because Jet is maybe my favorite shmup.

Thanks for the offer, but to be honest I don't even have a Steam account :X

Raiden Legacy which doesn't even accurately portray enemy bullet speed or even include the original inherent lag / slowdown that the Arcade Machine had. I'd willing to argue that down to the very frames of animation that MAME is the only current way of playing these games flawlessly without outright even owning an original working PCB and Arcade Cab of these titles.

A shame Dot Emu fucked up the port so bad. Hell they refuse to acknowledge the speed and lack of inherent slowdown according to a rep on the GOG forums.

No, I seem to be one of the only persons alive that doesn't have an iOS or Android device.
But that version's from the same developer, isn't it? The PC port has so many issues in basically every aspect, that I can't imagine the mobile version to be much better.

And here I thought "it can't possibly be that bad". I'm glad I at least waited for a sale.

The version on Raiden Fighters Aces is excellent.

I'm guessing the 360 version is as good as you can get with hardware that can only output at 60hz, but things aren't quite perfect (as in, free of frame pulldown or tearing) unless you can get whatever hardware you're using to output the original 54hz. Which a lot of PCs can do through MAME right now.

360 version is probably still better than the good-but-not-great Seibu SPI driver in MAME

plus blend shouldn't be very noticeable on a CRT. sound quality upgrade is totes worth any visible blending artifacts too considering the soundtrack.

Despise? Really?

Yep, hate with a passion most of sound effects and music. Shittiest part of the system, for me. I realize a lot of folks like it and there are a small games that are indeed amazing.

Not trying to offend anybody...just easily my least favorite "sounding" system, and a large part of why I lack any type of passion for the it.

What are good non-Bullet Hell Shmups on US PSN that I can play on the Vita?
I'm planning on getting Gunbird 1 and Sonic Wings Special, maybe Shienryu as well.

Shienryu is a slow burn kinda but I've grown to like it. I recommend it

I just picked up a Vita too and wish there were some decent hori shooters on it.
If Grev ported Strania to it that would be pretty dope...

Zanac X Zanac is one of the best on NA PSN.

Also, Alpha Mission II for a taste of a Neo Geo on your PSP.

^Zanac isn't vita compatible though isn't it? Might get Alpha Mission 2, let me look up a longplay of it.

Speaking of which I want NG Ultimate Shooting to go on sale already =/

Oh Gradius Collection is Vita compatible and is ported by M2. You need to trasnfer it from the PS3 first though

It actually is compatible. Took a look on my Vita to make sure.

I think you have to do the bubble thingie.

Wicked! What's the bubble thingie you're talking about though?

It has been a good while since I've put anything on my Vita.

But for certain titles you could get them on your Vita buy downloading them on your PS3 and then not installing (hence the bubble) and then link your Vita.

It has been a year so they might have fixed all that, though.

I have both R-Type games but sadly they are not Vita compatible.

Ah I was thinking you meant the PS3 Transfer method heh.

Yeah, kinda a pain. All I know is that I've had a ton of uninstalled bubbles on my XMB for a long while...very ugly.

Man, I really need a second Vita for all my japanese content. I've a huge catalog of awesome shooters on that one. Cool and awesome stuff like Harmful Park.

On the subject of PS2 Classics on PSN.

I'm kind of bummed out that R-Type Final or even Gradius V aren't available on there, yet they put something like Raiden III on there.

I'm not saying Raiden III is a bad game or anything. I mean even though some developers at Seibu Kaihatsu left the company to form MOSS to develop Raiden III, it just seems to lack something special that the Raiden Fighters series had.

In regards to Dojin Shmups, The Build-A-Dojin Bundle 2 has some Indie Shoot'Em Ups available.

http://groupees.com/doujin2

Kamui (of the Alltynex trilogy), and Armed Seven are available (from the same developers of Satazius)

If the bundle reaches the next bonus, the entire eXceed trilogy will also be available. (eXceed 2nd and eXceed 3rd are part of the package to be purchased, eXceed 1 is an bonus goal)

The problem is who owns the rights. In the case of Raiden III it's UFO, who have been actively getting whatever they can on PSN. They just put Heavenly Guardian up last store update. (You probably shouldn't bother with that one.)

But when it comes to R-Type and Gradius...even if there wasn't the whole situation with Irem being a ghost, AFAIK Square-Enix is only interested in farming out Eidos IPs to drum up cash for SE Japan—not rescuing a handful of localizations done under an obscure label. And Konami doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't MGS or Winning Eleven anymore.

It's a goofy reworking of Strikers 1945 II to fit in a horizontal NeoGeo resolution. I've had fun with it, but I'm assuming the original is better.

I have no clue how the PSP version is.

Hey, Wii Heavenly Guardian is quite good! It's a very oldschool game, in that it's 2d and a shooting game and you need to beat two loops of the game in one sitting in order to win, but it's fun. The PS2 version is unfortunately broken, though, since they removed the "twinstick" aiming the Wii has, though -- on Wii you move with the stick and aim with the pointer, but on PS2 all you can do is move with the stick and lock firing in the direction you're facing. Yes, no twin stick controls at all. It's bad. But the core game is good...

I know most people don't seem to feel this way, but I find Blast Wind much more fun than Hyper Duel. If I was to get one of those two highly expensive games, it'd definitely be Blast Wind.

I own both, and I've certainly played much more Blast Wind than Hyper Duel. I find the controls in Hyper Duel kind of clumsy, although I need to put more time into it.

Edit: Coffee never tasted so good:

tHANKS obviously SW Special is Sonic Wings 1-3 so I'll give them all a play once I get it off US PSN.

For that matter, how would you describe Shienryu?

Sonic Wings Special is not a compilation of 1-3. It's a proper title which combines ships and stages from the three games in a single package with branching paths and randomly selected stages past the first 3 (? Iirc).
I consider it much better than crappy Sonic Wings 3 (also I think the default "arcade" difficulty is mental when compared to SW1 and especially SW2).

Shienryu is a "classical" vertical scrolling shmup.
I think it's great and Hamster's port for PS1 (at least the JPN version, dunno if there are others) is pretty decent, it has many (mostly goofy) extras but misses a few gfx effects and has a worse audio than the arcade original, I've never tried the Saturn port so I dunno how it compares. Also there's no TATE mode available afaik.
You can grab the game off JPN PSN, should be ¥600 or maybe close to that.

Thanks for clearing up SWS though.
