Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Pokémon X & Y will be remembered as the worst entry in the franchise*
Sony first party titles are the most bland and generic stuff i've ever seen and they gain attention only for their technical features.

*unless it isn't downhill from here, in that case it will be remembered as the beginning of the end.

You guys know what thread this is, right?

You are aware that the game came before the cartoon, yes?

"HOW DARE PEOPLE ENJOY VIDEO GAMES I DON'T LIKE???????????????" or "I THINK YOUR FAVORITE OLD FRANCHISE IS SHIT, THEREFORE YOU ONLY LIKE IT BECAUSE NOSTALGIA"

Also the games were before the cartoons, genius.

I think Pokemon came to my attention as a 15 year old at the same time, must have been around 1998 or something. Shitty cartoon was on telly with the same stupid plot every episode and bullshit animation (I was a cartoon fan so stuck with it far too long in the hopes that it stopped being shit). Then I heard about the cards. Then my little cousin got the game on his gameboy and I already was pissy with the franchise from the terribad show. I even took him to the pictures to see the movie and it was one of the worst pieces of shit I've ever paid to see.

And the worst thing is: IT NEVER WENT AWAY. So we get derpy 20somethings harping on about it like it's a good franchise, when it's just a clever exercise in 'how much of the same shit will these idiots swallow every release?' It's not a patch on the other JRPGs of the era, and from what I've experienced seems a really cynical and dull franchise. It plays into that icky OCD-exploiting part of gaming where certain players will happily play the same old shit whenever it comes out (see: Zelda), despite the lack of any real innovation in decades.

So yes, I would say that a vast amount of it's popularity is down to nostalgia, or the truism that popular things tend to stay popular regardless of their quality.

And Pokemon fans shit up every funny pics thread with their painfully unfunny bullshit comics.

Fuck Pokemon and fuck pokemon fans. If you can name any post 150 Pokemon then you need to take a long hard look at your life. Only something as fucked up and bullshit as Pokemon could unleash a horror like Pamperchu onto this world. Even sonic fans aren't as freaky, and they have characters turning into toilets.

Remember what thread we're in :P

I'm enjoying the Pokemon defense force here though. Are we really allowed to fight in here or will I get banned for being so gleefully cunty?

You guys know what thread this is, right?

It's about having controversial opinion on games, not act like a dick to people for enjoying things.

And WOWWWW at the rest of your post. I'm having a hard time taking you serious right now. Hahahaha. There is so much wrong I can say about your post but I'll just note this:

Fuck Pokemon and fuck pokemon fans. If you can name any post 150 Pokemon then you need to take a long hard look at your life.
If you actually have an issue with people for simply enjoying a video game of all things and find them freaky due to that, then I think it's you who needs to take a long hard look at your life.

This is where we don't get judged... right?

Ah well, people will hate me for this but... GTA V is really boring. Amazing graphics, good story, and very nice world. Everything else, mission structure and most importantly gameplay are so dull. Better than GTA IV (Not hard), but inferior to Red Dead and pretty much every every GTA besides IV. Just my opinion.

Wouldn't dare make a thread about it since I'm sure I'd be crucified and my personal taste would be taken into account to negate my point somehow, but there it is. Has a place in this thread.

ehhh, I kinda half believe what I'm saying. I don't usually think about Pokemon long enough to work up the ire, but I do think less of Pokemon fans when I find out they like Pokemon.

I also just poked a hole in the side of my face with my tongue.

But seriously, for many things, the games are fairly innocuous - it's the fandom that is offputting.

adult pokemon fans don't "freak me the fuck out" but i get a kick out of all the people saying the games are hella complex and justify it by pointing to hidden stats and modifiers

Correction, you hate a portion of the fandom that are over-enthusiastic and loud. There's plenty of people who just enjoy the games and enjoy talking about them. Saying they're kids games is a little pathetic. I mean, sample question, what games do you enjoy?

The first Mass Effect game was horribly boring and uninteresting aside from the ending.

Mass Effect 3's ending was good because I got to free the Geth and become a reaper, which I saw coming half way through ME2.

The Arkham games have shitty combat made for morons

Netherrealm's fighting games (MK and Injustice) only sold on nostalgia and characters, they are amazingly stiff and unfun to play.

Games that added cross play with PS3 and Vita ruined their netcode even when they were already bad, aka MvC3 and SFxT (more a fact but w/e)

Ridge Racer (except for that realistic and burnout ripoffs) are the best racing games around.

The tales games are decent but their stuck in a rut of plot lines needs to go. They are so scared to make an interesting story they are loosing a bunch of interest. Break out of the mold of stories that are bare bones even by anime standards.

Resident Evil 5 was the best out of RE4-6. BECAUSE it was at least related to the franchise. For how good RE4's gameplay is, it was unrelated til the last 20 seconds of the game when they finally show wesker... in a chair. Not to mention how stupidly silly it is, running from a giant midget statue, cartwheeling through laser fences... ect. ect. Sure RE5 had the temple of doom for no fucking reason, but it was an improvement in every way of 4 in terms of gameplay and story. Yes Sheva's AI was bad but it worked... most of the time.

OK, the fandom that I don't like is the one I can see. The secret fans I don't mind so much. But the ones who think those comics are funny need to go away.

I didn't say they were kids games specifically, but it seems that most fans got into it as kids and carried it forwards.

I'm into lots of games, i'm 30 years old and have been playing since I was 10. Currently I play a lot of strategy and indies on my iPad, followed by some of the usual AAA stuff on PS3. Was big into Doom and Quake as a kid. Specifically love Metroiodvanias and masocore platformers on the smaller game tip. Went through a massive JRPG catchup bug about 5 years back, played all the SNES Dragon Quests and FFs, as well as Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Played all the Zeldas and Marios up to the first DS games... pretty varied really, I think the only things I don't play are sports games.

My GOTF is easily GTA though, I love that shit. By all means attack away.

Nah, not here to attack, just wondered. If you were criticizing it on the basis of it being a kids game, that would have sucked, but I agree fanbases can suck. Any fanbase when loud enough can.

My "controversial" opinion is that I don't see the problem with on disc dlc. It's content that was never meant to be free. I don't really care if it's on the disc or not, I'd be stuck paying for it anyway if I wanted it.

Gameplay is dull in GTA V, why? I think my opinion that I have enjoyed GTA IV, and more importantly Liberty City, much more than Los Santos is probably controversial as well.

i know people who have pokemon porn on their hard drives

they're actually cool people

shame about the porn though

I have Bayonetta porn, that shit is awesome. What specialities do the Pokephiles dig into then? Do they hold Pikachu a bit like I like you would hold a chicken?

The reason you're getting fights is because you're attacking people (as opposed to ideas like most other people in this thread.) You're really asking for it. You can't actively attack someone and then be surprised when people go to defend themselves.
Conversely I think anyone who judges someone based on the games they play (whether it be CoD or Pokemon) should take a "long hard look at their life."

Saying Pokemon fans are worst than Sonic fans is extremely stubborn. Sounds to me like you have a huge issue with Pokemon fans and haven't explored the web enough, considering that Sonic fanboys tend to be made fun of 24/7. Go type [blank] the hedgehog on google. You don't even want to know the amount of Sonic 'original character do not steal' on deviantart. Not to say some Pokemon fans aren't creepy.

As to my controversial gaming opinion: I don't really have any I can think of.

Most of my negative opinions can be quite popular if you look at the right crowd.

Bioware is but a former shell of what they used to be
I can't stand military shooters
I never thought Resident Evil was all that and a bag of dicks.

Here goes: Demon/Dark Souls are at best painfully average. They have barely any story, which is conveniently labeled 'minimalist'. They are graphically ugly and control absolutely terribly. Just because they are difficult does not make them old school, and playing thru them despite the difficulty does not make you hardcore.

More power to those of you that love them but I just dont get it. This is from my perspective having played both for roughly 8-10 hours

1. There's no point in owning an Xbox 360 over a PC other than having all your friends play on it on a regular basis. Even the scarce exclusives Forza, Halo, Gears and so forth are outclassed by similar PC games. It's basically a signficantly weaker PC with a cheaper entry cost but higher costs in the long rung which makes it IMO a highly unrecommended system.

2. Dota 2 is the mechanically best game ever by a country mile.

3. People who consider Final Fantasy 7 their favourite game ever annoy me.

4. Shin Megami Tensei has more high quality entries (and higher quality too) than Final Fantasy.

5. Halo 1's repetitive level structure makes it a boring game.

6. Dark Souls is a top 5 RPG. Possibly along with Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind and so forth. That's how good it is.

7. New Vegas takes a dump on Fallout 3

8. Shadow Complex was a really poor Metroidvania and got completely outclassed by Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia which came out in a similar time period. SC receiving a higher metascore was a travesty.

9. Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game and has the best dungeons in the series.

10. PC gaming 2013 is the best platform there's ever been for gamers.

11. Digital Distribution is a positive devolpment as long as it's executed like Steam.

12. 999 was the GotY of its respective year (2010? 2011? Hell, I don't remember) and has the most intriguing story in a video game along with Planescape.

13. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is among the best PS1 RPGs.

14. Persona 3 is a little better than 4 despite its flaws.

15. Bioware has never been an A tier WRPG developer. They used to be better than they are now but that doesn't really say anything. Baldur's Gate 2 was a crazy accident as they've never managed to produce a game remotely of that quality.

I'm not attacking specific individuals, I'm attacking what they believe in, there is a significant difference. I'm not saying "jamix, you are a piece of shit", I'm saying that Pokemon games and fandom are shit.

And I'm not upset at all that people are fighting back, although I am disappointed in the weakness of the defence since most of you are just saying "you can't say that" rather than telling me how wrong I am.

What major iterations and improvements have been made in the series? How was Pokemon Stadium a worthwhile N64 release? Was the cartoon really a modern masterpiece that I was not smart enough to find nuance in? Are Pokemon comics actually really hilarious?

The answer is no, because Pokemon is indefensible other than from the power of nostalgia.

Saying Pokemon fans are worst than Sonic fans is extremely stubborn. As I mentioned in BritGAF, I am of course very much aware of the depravity of sonic fans, and I blame them (along with Disney's Robin Hood) for helping to create the scourge of furries across the web.

But I kinda respect how up front they are about their fucked up perversions, Sonic has pretty much become an alternative term relating to extreme and alternative sexuality. That in itself is more interesting than the banal repetitive crap that Pokemon represents.

This reminds me, Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 weren't very enjoyable games. I only played them through because I'm in general a massive RPG fan and thought they'd get better along the way.

The writing and dialogue was good, but that's pretty much it. Didn't find the stories very interesting and gameplay was shit at best.

e: Also I hate the quest/journal system in Morrowind, so much even it's putting me off the game. Which is a shame, I've heard it's the best TES and since I liked Oblivion and Skyrim, I would probably love it if it had a more.. Streamlined system.

You shut your bitch mouth now. That movie is amazing.

I enjoyed both a lot. I do see your point however.

I'd argue about your nostalgia point, but I am honestly tired of that argument because it's not only overused but it's also a lazy as fuck argument. The same argument is going to happen over and over, so I'm not even going to bother.

Also, you were totally attacking people for liking Pokemon. May I need to remind you who said "Adult Pokemon fans freaks me the fuck out" and "Fuck Pokemon and fuck pokemon fans."?

For the record, I don't really care what you think of the games themselves and I am perfectly fine with you thinking they're shitty and full of rehashes. I am however not fine with you dismissing people's taste with the "nostalgia" bullshit.

There are no alternatives on PC to Forza or Gran Turismo and that's a crying shame. Sure there's Project Cars coming - but that really isn't the same thing at all (I've been playing Project Cars since the public test releases began).

If there was a Forza or Gran Turismo type game as good as the console ones but for PC I'd probably think it was time to give up the consoles.

Remember what thread we're in :P

I thought we were in Controversial Opinion thread, not Insult Other People thread. I stand corrected.

I also just poked a hole in the side of my face with my tongue.

Oh, if you're joking, by all means keep insulting anyone you want. It's not like it's the most overused, childish tactic ever to try to make people notice your opinion.

Before you go there, I haven't touched a Pokemon game since the Gameboy era, and I haven't touched a Digimon game in my life. I absolutely don't understand what the excitement is about X/Y, but I still respect those who like it.

Games should not be "fun"
Legend of Zelda is one of the worst series ever
JRPG games in general are nothing but grind and can't provide good enough story to stop being a waste of time.

Thank you, if games ever want grow up we have to get past this notion that the only emotion we should be deriving from something interactive is "fun." We have fun movies, and we have movies like Schindler's List which are painful to watch at times and not very fun at all. Games are constantly being held back by trying to explore new avenues of storytelling, while also trying to adhere to this old school philosophy that a game has to be fun as well, the two are most of the time not compatible and conflict.

It's not as if when I'm playing the Walking Dead and I axe some dude's leg off I'm going "oh gee this is so much fun." We need more games that are painful to play or make us feel uncomfortable for reasons other than "aww the controls are fucking awful."

Schindler's List is fun, though. I love and take pleasure from watching heart-wrenching tragic movies. If it helps, replace the term "fun" (because it has childish connotations for many) with "pleasurable". Games should always be pleasurable. Silent Hill 2 is pleasurable.

It's not like these things aren't true though.

It might be complex, I don't really know or care since dueling with other players doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. It's specifically the pointing to hidden stats part, as though any game ever isn't absolutely loaded with them.

God Hand is not a good game and people only like it because it's weeabo/Clover.

This is a fact

well this is a bummer

After purchasing iPads, Nexus devices, MOGA controllers etc.

... I've come to a massive Epiphany..

.. Tablet and phone gaming is horrendously unfun outside of simplistic games a child would only enjoy. In its current form it only holds my attention for a bout 3 minutes. I felt more in control of some of my bowel movements.

I'd argue about your nostalgia point, but I am honestly tired of that argument because it's not only overused but it's also a lazy as fuck argument. The same argument is going to happen over and over, so I'm not even going to bother.

If the argument comes up a lot then take a moment to consider that it may have some merit. Every Pokefan that I know has been into the series since they were children, and people are often happy to overlook their critical faculties to enjoy something they enjoyed as children. I very much doubt that there are many new 20+ year old fans - its something that comes from childhood.

Tbh, it's much like the fandoms for Mario/Zelda - if I'm playing one of those games today, it's not for their cutting edge mechanics an innovations. It's because I enjoyed them as a kid and want to re-live the feeling.

Or, let me cut myself deep - I love batman. But as an adult, it was hard to come to terms with the fact that my fondness for TAS is not from its objective quality - its aged really quite poorly. My love for Batman was created as a ten year old and I have nurtured it irrationally ever since.

I still stand behind my feelings about Pokemon fandom though, they are by far the most annoying fandom that I come across online - unwavering uncritical reception of Pokeproducts combined with a grating and unfunny collective sense of humour. I am ambivalent towards the games, but I actively dislike the fans.

I thought we were in Controversial Opinion thread, not Insult Other People thread. I stand corrected.

Joking in tone, mostly serious in content.

Raise your flame shields fellas! Shitting on stuff you don't like is meant to be gleefully fun. Otherwise I'm just annoying myself for no reason.

And that would be stupid.

Like Pokemon :D

I also think that Assassin's Creed 3 is one of the best games this gen.
It would probably be better to say then "Games should not *just* be about fun, they should be about anything", if that's what you mean.

Doesn't sound too bad - there are already a few that seek to do that.
Something like that

Just because they are difficult does not make them old school, and playing thru them despite the difficulty does not make you hardcore
Just say you don't like that style of "weighty" gameplay with every move being deliberate. It's not bad, it's just not fun for those who hate slow, cautious gameplay.

You have a spiderface as an avatar, you win the freaky game my friend.
::::)

I think you're getting worked up over nothing and you know it, but you're reluctant to concede that it's nothing. That's why you're now shifting to the "I was trolling all along" stance.

Am I getting warmer?
