How is it that Google is able to price these phones at an affordable price unlocked and the other companies try to bend people over with theirs? Nexus phones are the best value for what you get.

Just bought my beloved Nexus 4. It's a hell of a phone. If these are true facts I can see myself getting a 32gb next summer, before they get scarce.

Honestly, at 4.75 inches it's big enough to where I feel less pressed to update my tablet. $400 is a lot for a phone to me, but if I get a badass phone with a big screen and it means I can do without a new tablet it's a pretty good value proposition!

These are really exciting rumors!

My guess is that they're willing to not profit from the sale to build their brand and get you investing in their ecosystem.

After you've put a few hundred bucks into an app market, you're unlikely to switch platforms. You stick with android, they get to serve you ads when you use their excellent services.

Google makes most of it's profit from software and ads.

They are no doubt making money on the 32gb and I think evidence from Nexus 7 shows that the upsell will be a pretty good percentage of total purchases. The Nexus 7 sold as the $199 tablet initially but most of the people who bought it ended up getting a 16 (or 32gb) that cost $250+. They also do clever things with the inventory management to make the cheaper model less available

They're willing to reduce profit to grow the brand. Apple could price the iPhones at the same price tags and still bring in a profit, but they don't because they know people will buy it anyway.

I was ready to get an iPhone when news of the nexus being only a few weeks away hit. Figured it might be worth waiting to see googles offering. Seems like this could be the better purchase.

In terms of screen quality/specs how will it hold up to the SG4 and Iphone 5/s?

blows both away screen wise.

unless you favor amoled (which i used to until i got burn in).

spec wise, the n5 will probably beat out the s4 is general snappiness. the 5s? it beats the 5s in specs for sure but its hard to compare the two.

It blows away the 5s in specs? I find that hard to believe.

That price is so tempting. I just got a 5S but at 300 I might get the $300 model for when I am out of the country and I can just drop a sim in it. That is amazing value.

It has something like 440 ppi which means mathematically you would need to be closer than 4 inches for a pixel to be larger than 1 arc minute. 1 arc minute your visual acuity with 20/20.

So as long as you dont eye rape your phone then it has plenty of pixels.

Screen is supposed to be a IPS. Samsung uses AMOLED with a pentile-like layout that actually has fewer green subpixels. as far as has been released the N5 will be top shelf for screeens. Well top shelf for all specs actually.

I dont see what I would do with extra storage but I would pay $100 just for the bigger battery capacity. So 32GB sign me up plz.

Hmmm. Pretty satisfied with my GS4 now that I've committed to just leaving it on the Google Edition ROM. This is gonna be tough for me not to buy though.

I actually kinda like the home button on the GS4...what have I become?

Hmm, only bought a Galaxy Nexus a year ago (almost right before they announced the Nexus 4), but the Nexus 5 does sound tempting. Still not sure about the rumors though, especially the battery size. I also don't necessarily like not being able to replace the battery, but that seems like the standard for anything that isn't a Samsung these days.

in hardware specs? for sure. in performance? that'll be questionable. it seems to be hard to compare ios and android.

edit: i would guess that the 5s will win out in most benches.
I would wait for true tests before I made the claim it had better specs than the 5S.

If that's true then they caught up remarkably fast and more quickly than I would have guessed.

Why anyone would get any other Android phone is beyond me at that price. Let's see how it does in sales.

No choice and/or more features?

If you are on Verizon you may have no choice but to get a different phone. I do agree though, if I were to ever go android the Nexus line is the only decent line imo.

Wow. That really beats the previous speculation by a few hundred doesn't it? People were pegging Nexus 5 to be at least $500 off contract.

It's entire selling point is that it's cheap unsubsidized. The specs look good but make no mistake, it's gimped hardware. It has to be to be able to be priced so low.

If this is the case...then I'm gonna get a 5S on contract and a Nexus 5 off contract and switch between the two depending on if I'm feeling Android-y or iOS-y

Is it an LG phone? It doesn't say specifically in the OP.

edit: Nevermind apparently I can't read.

Any reports that the Nexus 5 will be available for Sprint?

Rumored, but not confirmed (FCC documents points to yes). Though I'm *this* close to jumping ship from Sprint to T-Mobile. If I can't even stream Google Music reliably for my commute, then unlimited data is useless to me.
