I can't really disagree on the fans, I hate most fandoms with passion. Still, I'd go as far as to say Persona is objectively nothing like Naruto.

While IX wasn't as beautiful as VIII graphically, I found the battle system MUCH more enjoyable and the pacing faster than the previous two entries. IX's world felt more detailed than VII's piecemeal bull crap and I was willing to trade the day/night system for a much better class system.

Also, it's kind of hilarious you chose DQ, just because it is known for it's refusual to go for flashy graphics and major changes to the series, and instead focus on gameplay above all else. = P

Dear Linux users,

I understand you would like more games made to run on your platform. Really, I get it and am 100% sympathetic.

That said, the way repeated questions/demands for Linux availability takes over nearly every game announcement discussion on the internet is excessive. Developers/publishers are aware of your plight, but frankly most of them don't care because the market share of gamers is incredibly small.

Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite was more annoying for me than being somebody I wanted to care for, plus that game was way over hyped. Alyx from HL2 is still the best companion in game for me
 
FF IX is the best in the series.
MGS IV is a fantastic game whith near unrivaled levels of detail.
Fallout 3 shits all over NV
Killzone 2 has the best gunplay this gen
Diablo 3 is really good(admittedly after patches)
Rayman origins is one of the greatest platformers of all time
Symphony of the night surpasses super metroid.
Dark souls has the most atmospheric world ever created in games.
Legacy of Kain series has one of the greatest stories in gaming.
The megadrive was superior to the snes.

I think there is some truth to what Dirtbag said. But we shouldn't have to deal or settle for anything. We don't have to like (or hate) everything that is brought to us. At the end of the day, money talks. We have our wallets and that is the best way for us to be heard.

As for the previous page, I think if the industry as a whole continues on it's path, a crash is inevitable and changes will have to be made to thwart total collapse. That can be avoided, and softened by a significant degree if publishers put more effort with mid tier priced games, as they did in generations in the past.

These are luxury items. I really don't care about anybody else's fun when it comes to getting mine. I mean, I can appreciate that others desires might not coincide with mine, and can respect different opinions. But at the end of the day, I care more about my fun than others, and whatever contributes to my fun is more important to me than what contributes to someone else's.
 
Dark Souls is a better game than Demon's Souls.
Metro 2033 is a better game than Bioshock Infinite.
Arkham Asylum was much better than Arkham City.

Being selfish is good in this case. This isn't some socialist commune we're talking about, it's a luxury item. I'm paying good money for my enjoyment, not anyone else's. I'm tired of seeing game after game come out that appeals to someone who would be impressed by a fart joke. It shouldn't be unreasonable to expect things to keep moving forward and progressing instead of constant regression.

Everyone keeps throwing out this Luxury Item comment, and it almost proves my point, and it is not really exactly what I'm relating either.

I'm specifically talking about the sustainability of the business and the fact that to the developers / publishers / etc. these are jobs and companies and salaries.
I don't believe that every game needs to appeal to the highest number of possible consumers nor that every feature needs to be focused grouped, but that the risk and cost has created lots of trade-offs that need to be covered in many different ways.

It's your money to spend or not spend, I just find the expectations often unrealistic and out-dated.
 
Yeah, I didn't see Dirtbag's point as being against having standards. There's a huge difference between criticizing/ignoring a game that doesn't meet your standards and insisting that you know a developer or publisher's situation better than they do. People often seem to severely underestimate the amount of work needed to implement a given feature, for example.

Reminds me of the thread earlier about "lazy dev" claims and how shortsighted they are.

Somewhat agree. Vice City I liked, but I'm an 80's child who grew up on a diet of Scarface, Miami Vice and electro. So it was bound to strike a chord with me. But the IP overall does nothing for me. Every time I've played, I mess around for 20 mins and get bored.

Again - I have minimum standards above maximum expectations.

I accepted DQ7 for the game it was, and part of my rationalization in doing so was that it was on a home console.

Just imagine if this had held true in 1992 and Dragon Quest V was made for the Gameboy instead of the Super Famicom.

  • PS2 was a lazy, mediocre system that merely rode that cheap DVD player gimmick and the leftover third-party ass-kissing from the admittedly great PS1 to its supposed "best console ever" status.
  • As of this writing, Wii is the best console ever. Best exclusives of this generation and a bigger library of greats than either the N64 or the GameCube. Severely underrated system.
  • The Xbox 360 controller is a bulky piece of junk that compromises in such a way between ergonomics and symmetry that it accomplishes neither. GameCube did ergonomics much better.
  • DualShock3's triggers were actually pretty good and the controller itself was the best DualShock so far. Shame that DualShock4 removed some functionality among all the cool new stuff it brings.
  • Related to the above, the Microsoft ABXY layout is all wrong and in an ideal world everything would use the Nintendo ABXY layout instead. It's a shame the former is what caught on for PC.
  • Brawl was better than Melee. Melee being as fast and heavy as it was were not points in its favor, but the game was good before the filthy competitives tore it to pieces and killed all the fun.
  • Yoshi's Island was boring. Credit is due for codifying stuff like red coins, but aside from the great-for-the-SNES graphics, it wasn't anything special. The Baby Mario mechanic was just annoying.
  • Borderlands is a mediocre shooter series that gets by entirely on its Skinner-box quest/loot system. Firefall pulled off the concept a million times better.
  • Sunshine was one of the best Mario games and FLUDD was a good mechanic. At the very least it aged better than the original N64 version of Super Mario 64 did.
  • Star Fox 64 was the weakest of the series. Assault did the classic Star Fox formula so much better and Adventures was good in its own right even if not much of a Star Fox game.
  • Mega Man 2 was an average installment that everyone only remembers because of the Wily music and overpowered Metal Blade. Mega Man & Bass was probably the best classic-series game.
  • Motion controls are still a valid control scheme and potentially even better than the beloved keyboard/mouse combo. Everyone's just too stupid to use them correctly.
  • Competitive/professional gaming is a waste of time and an indicator of the participants' unwillingness to grow the hell up and get a real job.
  • Vista and Win8 are good operating systems (for Vista, at least once it got its launch issues ironed out.) This "Windows Cycle" is a load of garbage.
  • Meanwhile, XP started as a buggy piece of crap, was pretty good for a while, and ended as an archaic piece of crap. Far from the "best Windows ever."
  • More related to the above two items than gaming, but Firefox blows and always has. I preferred IE6 over that crap and once Chrome came out, I never looked back.
  • MOBAs are pretty much everything wrong with modern gaming crushed into one genre. Particularly, DotA 2 is a bad influence on VALVe and distracting them from more significant things.
  • Pre-Microsoft Rare is overrated and even at its peak wasn't as good as Retro Studios (not that it didn't put out some good games, though.) Conker's Bad Fur Day in particular was a low point.
  • Aside from the new inFAMOUS, PS4 really doesn't look like anything special. For starters, they gooned up the controller by removing a proper Start/Select pair and pressure-sensitive buttons.
  • Video games are still just toys.
  • I still hate gamer culture.
  • Unless given reason to believe otherwise, all message board posts besides my own are mentally heard in a condescending nerd voice by default when I read them.
 
I think the XB1 and Microsoft will be perfectly fine, regardless of it's power weakness.

QTEs can be used as a device for engaging gameplay when not used lazily. The best, most recent example of this is The Wolf Among Us.

There hasn't been a good Zelda game since Wind Waker.

  • Painkiller blows.
  • Tribes: Ascend blows.
  • Final Fantasy 8 was pretty good.
  • Trine was lame.
  • Zelda games are boring.
  • Traditional fighters are stupid, and Capcom should just give Mega Man to Nintendo, Ace Attorney/Ghost Trick to Level-5, and piss off.
  • If you use Axtinguisher in TF2, you are a tool. If you use Degreaser in TF2, you are also a tool.
  • If you are a TR in PlanetSide 2, you are most likely - but not necessarily - a tool (NCs are pretty chill as far as enemy factions go.)
  • If you use Axtinguisher and Degreaser in TF2, you are a supreme tool grande with a side of tool fries and a tool shake for dessert.
  • Of the Mario RPGs I've played (SMRPG through BIS), Paper Mario 1 was probably the weakest. PiT was the biggest letdown, though.
  • You are fooling no one by using the Postal Pummeler, tool.
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2 was a great game despite its infuriatingly bland aesthetics.
  • Portal 2 is miles better than Portal 1, which lacked impact in comparison.
  • The 2DS should never have existed.
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising's controls were fine, speaking as a lefty. Hell, it was GotY 2012 anyway.
  • Kinect has the potential to be pretty cool, barring the malicious corporate spying.
  • Poker is better than chess.
  • Non-gaming related: The '90s were better than the '80s.

-Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time.
-Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is an awful game, as Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 are infinitely better. Can't stand the gameplay, graphics (artstyle), etc.
-Super Mario Bros 2 is also a really stupid game. Why did we get that crap instead of the Lost Levels to begin with?
-I've played and love both the original MGS and MGS: The Twin Snakes, but for how outlandish and over-the-top TTS is, I give it the edge over the original.
-MGS4 is a great game.
-Keifer Sutherland sounds okay as Snake but the MGS series will never be the same again because of the lack of David Hayter.
-Brawl is better than Melee.
-Mega Man 3 and Mega Man X are the best game in their respective series.
-Xbox Live is a terrible value compared to PSN.
-Gears of War looks fun but I just can't get into it.
-I like Halo 4's campaign and didn't mind the multiplayer (especially after the patches).
-I despise Halo Reach, what an awful game.
-The PS4 is going to hold a lead over the Xbone for this entire gen.
-Titanfall looks boring to me.
-Never liked the Xbone from the start and even after all it's 180s, it still is terrible for the most part.
-COD has been awful after the original Modern Warware (COD1, 2, and 4 were the best).
-I fucking hate yearly franchises. Give it a rest for at least a year or something instead of pumping out yet another game in the series.
-Kinect is one of the worst things Microsoft did. I can't even name 10 games that really made good use out of it, plus I hate that Microsoft packs it in with the Xbone.
-Could care less about Playstation Move either.
-The Wii had some great games but as a console it was terrible.
-Final Fantasy VIII was a really good game.

-The Last of Us is an excellent game, but I thought Uncharted 2 kept me way more entertained.
-Even if Capcom released a few versions of the same game (especially Marvel), I would buy it because their fighting games are pretty good.
-I only buy DLC for games that I love, otherwise I hate DLC in general.
-The Wii U is a terrible console and Nintendo should be ashamed for releasing it.
-The Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 is the best mouse ever created. :p
-I like playing on easy mode when I want to enjoy the story, otherwise it's on normal.
-Subtitles absolutely have to be on, otherwise I can't enjoy the dialogue and cutscenes - plus games that don't have subtitles for dialogue irritate me.
 
  • Resident Evil 6 is the best shooter -- first person or third -- since S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in 2007.
  • Final Fantasy XIII is a fantastic game with a fantastic combat system.
  • If you allow me to stretch by a month, F.E.A.R. is the best FPS this generation, and in the top three of all time along with Doom and Perfect Dark.
  • On a related note, F.E.A.R. 3 is actually pretty good. Better than Project Origin.
  • Dishonored wouldn't be half as good without Blink.
  • Fire Emblem Awakening isn't nearly as good as Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn. Hell, I might even put it below Shadow Dragon (which isn't as weak as people make it out to be).
  • Half-Life 2 isn't all that great, and the much-lauded method of immersive storytelling is cheap and awful.
  • Indie games generally suck shit.
  • Oblivion is the best Elder Scrolls game. Morrowind would be, but that combat is unforgivable.
  • The best CoD is United Offensive. It will remain the best, because I'm never touching the series again.
This gen:


  • 10/10s: Dark Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Virtue's Last Reward (or 999 depending on what day of the week it is)
  • 5/10s: Uncharted 2, Portal, Mass Effect, Journey
  • 4/10s: Red Dead Redemption, Skyward Sword, Gone Home
  • 3/10s: Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands
  • 2/10s: Dear Esther, Bioshock, Fallout 3 (NV, however, is good), The Walking Dead
  • 1/10s: There are none. The Walking Dead was the low point for this gen.
 
Most (as in 99%) of the people that play games avidly (as in several hours a day) are boring people.
Most games are boring and childish.
Most games are overpriced.
Most games are the same.
Most games severely lack artistic value.
Most games have awful narratives.
Most game narratives are sexist and bigoted.
Most games sit a vacuum drawing little from real world issues and problems people face every day.
Most games leave the player with absolutely nothing to take away.
Most indie games are mostly the only games that don't exhibit any of the listed flaws above.

Pretty much my thoughts after this gen.
 
Despite all the 1080p vs 720p and 60 fps vs 30 fps disappointment, there are surprisingly few folks flocking to the PC. If you're going to be graphics whores, be graphics whores. If you're going to be console fanboys, be console fanboys. I understand that building a rig can be expensive and confusing. Just stop acting like graphics and performance are everything while ignoring the platform with the best graphics and performance.

This goes for gaming pundits too.

Complaining about puff n' sting has to be the weirdest TF2 related gripe I've seen.
 
I wish Nintendo would go 3rd party. It'd be nice if I didn't have to buy a whole new peice of hardware just for 6-8 Nintendo games I'm interested in.
