Let us get this out of the way, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the greatest albums of the past ten years. With that said I feel like Kanye's shenanigans make people disregard the music he's actually made, and I feel like most people won't respect his work until after he's dead because of his behavior. Kanye is an asshole, I think this is agreed upon by a lot of people, and I'm not going to spend any time defending the type of person he is. But it should be known that the music he makes is separate from the person he is.

I also feel like if you don't enjoy Kanye's music, you still have to acknowledge all the work he's done for not only the Hip Hop genre, but for music in general. Similar to how you don't need to like Beethoven to respect the effect he had on the Classical Era. And yes I just compared Kanye West to Beethoven. Overall it just seems like people hate on the guy to hate on him, when in reality he's creating some of the best music of our generation and it appears that no one can admit that.

And yes the title is intended to be a joke about the VMA thing.

Update

Alright so I compiled a list of my personal favorites from Kanye's albums. This is by no means a definitive list, just songs that stand out to me and would probably help a lot of people understand the different types of music Kanye makes.

The New Workout Plan
Never Let Me Down

Late Registration
My Way Home
Crack Music
Roses
Hey Mama
Diamonds From Sierra Leone

Too many good songs, hard to not post whole entire albums.

Edit: TLOP is out. Title should be changed to Greatest Artist of The Past Century. Fuck all y'all. #FACTS

Cosigned.
The man is a moron whenever he speaks publicly though, he needs to stay out of the limelight. His music is incredible though.

it's true. it's damn true.

People go so overboard in their praise of performers they enjoy, I swear.
although kanye is now looked at like a big 'pop performing artist', he is really everything besides that too. he is more so a songwriter and producer. little phrases like that really undermine it, and show that you don't know much about the man.

Y'know. He's OK. But everything he does is bloated and overlong, dude needs to trim every one of his songs but about 20% and albums similarly. Give me 45mins of fucking gold any time.

But as rappers go he's OK, and as popular artists go he might be one of the best. But compared to the broad spectrum of music, the best of which you or I may never even hear, he's just OK.

I feel like he will have something perfectly nice, then over produce it or add in noises for the sake of it instead of it being for the betterment of the actual sound. I give him credit though. When he is on point, the guy really shines.

His rapping is awful most of the time though. Both in sound as well as execution.

and this just shows you proving his point.

Usually to make a claim like this you'd say why he is good. Like how he has advanced the theory or sound behind hip hop music or something. Then use examples of other artists that were influenced by the structure of his music maybe. That would be cool.

He's definitely done good things, but MBDTF is overpraised. Song's like 'all of the lights' have such terrible sound quality that I can't even listen to them without getting headaches.

Should have provided his best work in the OP so those of us not really up to date can have a listen and write a more informed post.

His music is pretty good but I don't like his rapping. I think he is a better producer of music than he is a performer of music. I wouldn't call him a genius but he is pretty great.

i think him producing a song (with a singer on the vocals though of course) for james bond would be fantastic.

tears would be shed for it's beauty.

Yes, Dark Twisted Fantasy is an amazing album (Power, Monster, All of the lights are my favorites). Also, kanye produced the first blueprint which is also one of the best rap albums of the past 20 years.

I do think all of his success went to his head. The lyrical content on his earlier albums are so different compared to his most recent one (where he basically says he's a god).

and this just shows you proving his point.

you don't know the difference huh
where he basically says he's a god).

it's still self expressive music. kanye west music has always been about the listener singing the lyrics from their perspective, eg. " can't tell me nothin." he want's the listener to feel like nothing can stop them. like they are a god. it's no different than rappers saying, "damn it feels good to be a gangsta" "im a g" or whatever. people just get upset because it's the ego perspective on kanye and him saying he's a god pisses people off.

I think My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a fantastic album, but Yeezus didn't really do much if anything for me. Never took the time to dig into his back catalog.

This. I think the guy is a genius. Even in his new interviews he talks more about real shit the in the past. Guy is just being hated about things he has done in the past.

I like his music, but could you explain what you mean by this:

...you still have to acknowledge all the work he's done for not only the Hip Hop genre, but for music in general.

What has he done for music in general? Or Hip Hop for that matter?

Kanye West is this eras Beethoven?
That's a pretty good comparison because both don't deserve the amount of attention they get!

Signed.

I can let these dream-killers kill my self esteem, or use my arrogance as the steam to power my dreams, I use it as my gas so they say that I'm gassed, but without it I'd be last so I ought to laugh....

His production throughout his career is very stylistically varied and very consistent. Very few artists in recent times can claim both. College Dropout, 808s, and MBDTF?

Should have provided his best work in the OP so those of us not really up to date can have a listen and write a more informed post.

I wanted to do this, but everyone has such differing tastes of his music that I felt like I couldn't do justice coming up with a definitive list of his best songs. I could list some of my favorites but I think other people will be able to come up with better suggestions than me.

I like his music, but could you explain what you mean by this:

He did ignite the backpack rap trend that took over most of hip hop and is still used to this day, eclipsing gangster rap which was popular at the time of the release of College Dropout. He produced Jay Z's Blueprint which was a very pivotal album for very important people in the hip hop industry, including Jay Z and Eminem on the track "Renegade." In terms of music in general he simply pushed what most "pop" artists did, his experimentation with 808s & Heartbreak and Yeezus was a testament to the different styles he experimented with, some of those styles eventually becoming even more popular. Sorry I'm not listing that many specifics, but it's 3am here and I have class tomorrow, I apologize if I couldn't respond to anyone's post today or wasn't specific enough.

You can't really come out with a statement like that without backing it up. Please illuminate my ignorance, what has Kanye's contribution to music been that has you comparing him to Beethoven?

I Write Like This.

It's only a title man, the rest of the OP is normal.

Contemporary of All Time?

I don't think there's an issue with the way I wrote the title.

Contemporary is from the 70s to now I think, so yes within these past 40 years he ranks among the best.

i havent heard anything of his. can you people post his best stuff/your favorite stuff?

As I said in my previous post I don't think I could do everyone justice, but I'll try to come up with a list of my favorite tracks by him tomorrow morning.

er does he even write most of 'his' music?

He produces and writes most of his songs yes, although he does get creative input from other artists/producers as templates for his lyrics and production I think.

Usually to make a claim like this you'd say why he is good. Like how he has advanced the theory or sound behind hip hop music or something. Then use examples of other artists that were influenced by the structure of his music maybe. That would be cool.

I would totally be down to do something like this, but I never took music theory and I would end up making myself look like a fool as the only musical background I have is three years of orchestra and taking a music appreciation class in high school.

Read the post above, sorry if it's not specific enough, I really am tired atm.

Thank you for this. We can ignore your claim and move on with our lives.

His last album was dog shit bad.
that's his wife's fault

my beautiful dark fantasy is the white album of our generation where every song tells a story and is a radio hit on the top but with a deeper meaning on the inside

808 heartbreak is him expanding and experimenting. less talented artist saw this and over used sampled auto tunes and bass drops. heartless is basically a better hey Jude

gold digger explains the modern day females and their search for their identity by hanging on the strings of richer husbands and they could've done better for themselves instead of being used as rubbers

I'm coming home again with Chris Martin he talks about the girl he had to leave behind to grow up but how much he loved her but she turned cold in the winter, messed with gangs, talked bad about him when he left, but in every bit success he has now he still remembers her because she represents him. that's his first love. spoiler that girl called wendy is Chicago (the Windy City)

then theres hey momma where he talks about his promises to his mom, diamonds from Sierra Leone where you work all your life for something so wrong but it makes you feel so right, hell of a life about living fast, black skinhead about modern slavery........

I mean I can go on. but Taylor swift fans singing about bleachers and jean skirts won't appreciate that. future generations will

I'll give him one thing! His fans are entertaining!
I can't think of any other artist who's fans are so obsessed with telling everyone how dumb you are for not thinking he's the best thing thats ever happened to the world... Well other then that beiber kid but thats because teenage girls are mental anyway!
