Kanye West Is One Of The Greatest Contemporary Artists Of All Time

All I've heard of his is 808s & Heartbreak, but that's a great album. Very intimate. Dude seems like a douche IRL, though.

I'm not opposed to his music but I have to admit I lost nearly all my respect for him as a person.

He did a "surprise" performance in Belgium last year when he was here.
It was only announced a week beforehand or something and cost 70€ (100$).
I wasn't a big fan and I would certainly not have paid the full sum but my friend wanted a wingman since he was trying to get closer to one my friends who was also going.
So he paid half.

But holy shit, that "concert" wouldn't have been worth 20 euros. I've seen better concerts for free. He just came up an hour late, sang a couple of songs (some he lengthened for 10 more minutes by just mumbled singing) and that was it.

That's just being unrespectful towards your fans. Fans, mind you, who paid a very hefty sum to be there.

I like some songs on Late Registration and Graduation and some of his newer work, but to label him as one the Greatest Contemporary Artists of All Time? That's a bridge or two too far.

What the fuck does "greatest contemporary of all time" mean?

Is the title not loading properly for some people because it should say "Kanye West Is One Of The Greatest Contemporary Artists Of All Time"

Thank you for this. We can ignore your claim and move on with our lives.

Oh. But in all seriousness I don't think I need a masters in music theory this to voice my opinion about his music.

Wow, I was really leaning towards going there too... good thing I didn't apparently.

Anyway, he doesn't come over as a normal person in public but really, who gives a shit. His music is awesome and often genre defining and that's what matters.

Oh. But in all seriousness I don't think I need a masters in music theory this to voice my opinion about his music.

Terming anything as "greatest contemporary _____ of all time" is nothing short of meaningless.

Also, I'm sure Beethoven is shaking in his grave because Kanye is coming for the title.

"My identity hinges on thinking there can still be important artists" the thread.

You don't. But when you claim he's the greatest, you need to back that shit up with some hardcore evidence, other than "I like his music." Explain to your audience why he's the greatest, in your opinion.

I like Aqua, but I don't proclaim they're the greatest of all time.

I like Kanye's music too, but equivalent to Beethoven? I think you're stanning a little too hard there.

For me, Kanye feels like a real artist who is pushing the boundaries of his genre. Nothing sounds like Yeezus, but I wouldn't say anyone is being influenced by it. It's unique and that's what I like about it. I wouldn't say MBDTF is a "gamechanger" anymore than the average Drake album, despite the fact that MBDTF is a work on a whole different level.

Kanye as a person though? :lol

I don't care much for rap or hip hop in general, but honestly Kayne is one of the few rappers that I can stomach. Dude certainly has some really good stuff, but I wouldn't call him one of the greatest.

I personally don't care about him aside from The College Dropout & Late Registration as a whole. Everything he's released since then has been really hit or miss for me. Even MBDTF. But the tracks that I do fuck with on his later albums I consider really dope. And yeah, I can see him being mentioned in lists of greats, whether people like that or not is something they're gonna have to deal with tbh. Dudes a cultural icon in music lol. Everybody knows of his antics. I don't want to judge an artist off what they do in their actual lives, but Ye's ego is wild hahaha. It's cool though, TCD was my anthem in middle school. That album will always be special to me.

Most of his music has been shockingly terrible after Late Registration. I don't know what happened, I just can't get into his shit these days. I think maybe part of it is how he's always rolling out an army of co-producers for every project. The dude is an insanely talented producer, but I think all the collaborators he's always working with tend to water his talent down. Though I will say Yeezus was a step in the right direction after the mess that was MBDTF. But yeah, he's a big deal in the world of music. Can't really deny that.

As for his personality, he seems like an asshole with a huge ego, but I really couldn't care less. I'll never deal with him personally or anything, so his personality is irrelevant to me really.

Just give me another album on the level of College Dropout or Late Registration please.

Comparing Kanye West to Beethoven ........... How sad.

In 20 years he will just a hip hop act from back in the day.

Yup. I threw up a little in my mouth when I read that.

I've given his music a chance a few times, but it just isn't for me. Nothing notable or exceptional about him or his music imo. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

only because standards have lowered. he's clever in the way he puts his name and brand out for public consumption, it's what prompts people to compare him to superior artists and pretend like he's on their level.

Haha, wow, hypebole much? He's gotten worse and worse since his first album, he's not the 'best' anything. That's not to say I stil don't enjoy some of his music but damn...

I also feel like if you don't enjoy Kanye's music, you still have to acknowledge all the work he's done for not only the Hip Hop genre, but for music in general.

Can you elaborate on that?

EDIT: Ah, you did.

In terms of music in general he simply pushed what most "pop" artists did, his experimentation with 808s & Heartbreak and Yeezus was a testament to the different styles he experimented with, some of those styles eventually becoming even more popular. Sorry I'm not listing that many specifics, but it's 3am here and I have class tomorrow, I apologize if I couldn't respond to anyone's post today or wasn't specific enough.

"Experimenting" (or, as most people would call it, "playing") different styles of music isn't groundbreaking in any way, I'm afraid. I assume you've not heard of The Beatles or David Bowie? They did all that in pop music a while ago.

Exactly. Kanyes music really appeals to Kanye fans.

And Beethoven? Congrats OP, you just made me a Kanye-hater by association.

Y'know. He's OK. But everything he does is bloated and overlong, dude needs to trim every one of his songs but about 20% and albums similarly. Give me 45mins of fucking gold any time.

But as rappers go he's OK, and as popular artists go he might be one of the best. But compared to the broad spectrum of music, the best of which you or I may never even hear, he's just OK.

This. I don't care about his personal life. Although as a producer and writer I think he's more than Ok, but as a rapper I find him pretty boring.

while I'm not a fan of his music at all, this is nowhere near as bad of a claim as anything coming from PopGAF so I'll accept your opinion.

I'll give him credit for being willing to try something new, but most of his albums aren't all that great.

why do you millenials always have to go with some variation of This Thing/Person I Like Is The Bestest Thing Ever

really shows a lack of perspective. which is fine but one ought really sample a little more than pop (or just music for that matter) before making such a decree

Though I'll probably regret this, you've tempted me to go over and have a look.

Kanye is a musical genius. Eager to see what kind of impact he will have on fashion and other creative fields as he ages.

You're Goddamn Right OP.

Definitely agree with you OP. He has revolutionized the whole industry.

Can at least one of you back up why this is the case?

really belies a lack of perspective
because we are fixing the previous generations fuck ups that has left the country in its current state and our things are superior because they have to be superior to survive

old people should learn to know their place in the world

Uh, what country?

(See. No perspective)

Okay. So how did that "revolutionise the whole industry"?

  • With his persona that is bigger than the industry itself. His character has grown from album to album. Yeezus is the peak of this where he takes a very different approach from his other albums and mixes acid house and industrial sounds, with raw primal vocals.
  • The way he promoted Yeezus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgR-8W5JF10

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is also one of the highest rated hip hop albums of all time, and arguably the best "comeback" album of all time. That year of introspection he had allowed him to change the entire landscape of hip hop, producing tracks like Power and the flawless Runaway.
