Running away? Is that even possible? Aren't there rules that can force a vote with the remaining members in times of emergency... Like this one?

I can't possibly believe that they manage to do and say even dumber shit as the days progress.

All of the rules need changing, when this gets settled.

Gosh darn it.... I thought that both sides were getting somewhere and there was light at the end of the tunnel. I guess this is what happens when you start to believe. :(

Looking on from the UK, I can't understand why the Boehner/ Senior Republicans are running scared of the minority wing of their party. Why pander to a minority of lunatics?

*sigh* One day left, I hope I have chance to offload my shares incase financial ruin hits.

Not gonna happen. I think Dem's could do well in midterms on a ticket of "let's change the laws to never let this happen again.", especially if they started that PR machine right now. But it's never gonna happen. Gerrymandering laws aren't going to be changed either. If Dems win the house in 2020 they'll use it to their advantage, which will be good for us libruls cause it'll shift congress to the left, but will cause problems in the long run and isn't fair.

I can't believe, also looking on from the UK, that the world's economy is effectively being held ransom by a few idiots in the US. You guys over the pond must be so embarrassed by your politicians and your political system for allowing this. How did we get to this state?

We'll fuuuuuu

Senate waiting for House to act, Roy Blunt says Reid & McConnell never had a "deal" but will pick up talks if House fails to pass something.

This much aggravation over a few months extension is insane, you can't go through this again. It's time for republicans to start playing hardball with the lunatics.

But they can't because it's their base, what a fucking shambles.

Senators and aides all saying Senate negotiations are stalled because Sen. McConnell is waiting to see what happens with Boehner's plan.

Now we know my Reid was so pissed off this morning

There was a supreme court decision called "Citizens United" which allows for corporations to make unlimited campaign contributions to whoever they want with zero transparency.

This is how the Tea Party came about.

If any moderate Republican doesn't bow down to the insane demands of the Tea Party, the corporations that fund the Tea Party movement will spend millions if not billions on a Tea Party candidate in their district, pretty much destroying any hope for their re-election. This is what is referred to as "being Primaried".

They have taken the entire Republican party hostage, and now have taken the entire country hostage.

He'll likely be ousted as Speaker should he fail to appease his conservative base. He was treading on thin ice in 2012, but the only reason he didn't get replaced then was because the republicans had no one else able and willing to take the position.

We passed a law called "Citizens United" which allows for corporations to make unlimited campaign contributions to whoever they want with zero transparency.

Basically, the entire system is broken now.
Wouldn't it hurt corporations if there were a government shut down?

Oh well... The Republicans have fucked us all. See you guys on the other side of the cliff. Hopefully i still have a job in the next few days.

It would hurt some corporations, others not so much, and yet others who are in a position to benefit from a bear market would profit immensely. We have a pretty good idea that the Koch Brothers were the main starters of the Tea Party movement... but like I said, there is zero transparency on who is funding anyone due to citizens united.

I'm assuming at this point there is a lot of money coming in from companies that benefit from collapses.

Citizens United is not a law, it is an organization. The case "Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission" was the one taken up by the Supreme Court that struck down existing laws that prevented entities like SuperPACs from popping up.

I think a default would make debt-talk a huge issue for the elections, which had sort of taken a backseat. In a post-default context, I think it will be easy for the right wingers to make the major election issue be the national debt, and use that to attack ACA. It might seem like a bad strategy now, but in a post-default America not so much.

As I said before, you can hold such an unreasonable position until the damage to everyone is so severe that everyone lets you get what you want. In a post-default USA, I wouldn't be surprised spending-destruction would be favored, regardless of the long-term impact.

If nothing happens in the next 4hrs, Obama should call up the networks for a national address. We are flirting with a global fucking meltdown.

So what should I invest my PS4 money into after the market crashes? Also, is it possible to invest only like 500 bucks or do you have to have thousands before you can start an account.

Wouldn't leaving town fuck up their already bad image even more?

Think of all the major catastrophes that have happened just because people don't hear any contrarian opinions: The housing crisis, the Bush administration, the Star Wars prequels. When you surround yourself with Yes Men, you make terrible decisions.

I feel terrible for all the people who spent decades building up their 401k to watch it get fucked in 2008, only for it to happen again.

Once the world has to pick itself back up again from this self made crisis, they will try to make america as irrelevant as possible.

Invest in cardboard boxes and corrugated tin, a new kind of affordable housing.

He has to be careful as he could frighten the markets, or rather the average American into liquidating their 401ks (and then maybe others abroad).

2020 is waaaayyy too far away for me to put any hope into.

Honestly if the democrats have any semblance of a spine they should make it a tent pole of their next election and Obama should make political reform the staple of his domestic policy. I'm not so cynical to think they might not do it cause I think ultimately such reforms would likely benefit democratic policies and the party.

But until the underlying issues of money in politics and Gerrymandering are fixed all other issues and policies will suffer.
