US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

Eh, not necessarily. I'm in the camp that says that water basically has intrinsic value, but I can see the side that argues that all value is a product of human experience. Water certainly only has intrinsic value to beings who require water to survive.
That's not an argument that nothing has intrinsic value, though. just that water doesn't have any.

Actually, your last statement basically says that water has extrinsic value. (Value because of its effects).

You also ascribe value to survival. Although, also for effect based reasons.

But you can't do that forever. Eventually, you'll be unable to think of an effects based reason for something to be "good".

I will assume you are unable to articulate any problem with China selling all of the US Treasuries it owns.

They have those for international trade, however they have conducted stress tests since 2010 to test the ability of domestic demand (and phase out exports to the US), they have started trading with BRICS directly (without the need for dollars), they have set up a swap line directly with Europe (not needing dollars to trade with them)... and they have been blatantly pushing for a different world reserve currency.

We are probably one major global crisis away from that happening.

In economics, the term is meaningless. The value of any commodity is what people are willing to pay for it. Water is a life-sustaining substance, but it's also has a low price because it's abundant and self-replenishing. A high demand, rendered nil by a high supply.
Sorry, didn't read your original post. Indeed, in the case of capitalism, the value is what you said.

Write it down: Paul Ryan will be the Speaker of The House before 2014's election.

My god. This is the kind of shit the Hastert Rule has wrought. The minority of the majority party is emboldened to such an absurd degree they'll hold everyone hostage until they get what they want.

I... er... what?

How can people be this stupid?

In the end a clean bill will be passed that Obama wanted the whole time because the republicans can't let the country end up defaulting. All of this shit will be for nothing for them.

Is boner even going to allow the vote for the senate bill?

It's so stupid he's the only one allowed to let a vote occur.

Fucking hell. For over two weeks, Boehner made hundreds of thousands of people miserable, cost the economy hundreds of millions of dollars, and wreaked havoc on investor confidence in the U.S. market all to hold onto his job...which he's going to lose anyway. Christ.

You are an optimist. Republicans are more than evil enough to let the default happen, they are more than willing to see the United States get hurt and peoples jobs and savings wiped out.

Scumbags.

I was going to say that America is a toilet and I want out, but then I saw a banner ad for this:

http://www.pillsbury.com/products/breakfast/frozen-pancakes/heat-n-go-blueberry

Also you should all click this ad. It will help fix the gaf downtime, too.

real talk, the pillsbury doughboy looks like he just did a pretty hardcore wake and bake on that package and is now ravenous for morning munchies.

also I wonder if I can not do anything and then tell my boss it was because of the hastert rule. That seems like a good job.

He either brings up the Senate bill for a vote now or he goes down in history as the man who let the US default. He's overplayed his hand and he's now out of options.

At least when the Senate bill passes, he can run and tell his Tea Party masters that he did the best he could and they might let him keep Speakership (if they even keep the House in 2014).

Sorry if its been mentioned before, but could someone link to a timeline of exactly whats happening and its implications? I kinda ignored this because I thought it was typical dickwaving in american politics. Its starting to sound like something that could have serious and global implications, all to just prove a point it seems.

We hit the debt ceiling on the 17th. If that happens, the American economy will take a pretty serious dive.
How serious is up to debate.

As for the bolded, it's not even for that. They're doing this over nothing. Literally nothing.

Fox News is told that a decision by the conservative group Heritage Action to come out against the emerging bill drove some Republicans to oppose the plan -- and helped sideline the proposal.
+

Conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch have another political cause — Heritage Action Fund.

The megadonors have cut a check for half a million dollars to the group, which is often at odds with the GOP establishment and has made attacking Republicans a common practice this year.

what a shit stained situation we let this turn into America.

Here is a list of socialist countries. Tell me which ones have been a wild success.

And before you say China, let me suggest you take a look at their human rights record before you say that is a runaway success.

First thing I thought of when reading that page:

Sir Humphrey Appleby: East Yemen, isn't that a democracy?
Sir Richard Wharton: Its full name is the Peoples' Democratic Republic of East Yemen.
Sir Humphrey Appleby: Ah I see, so it's a communist dictatorship.

For a party that preaches "financial responsibility", letting the U.S. default raising interest rates on our debt will be far more damaging than anything else on the table at the moment.

Yeah, Boner really has no choice but to bring the Senate bill up for vote.

So am I just being really naive thinking "They won't be this stupid."?

Because I'm not too scared. I don't think anyone wants to go down as "America's default man" let alone self-serving Boner.

Republicans don't give a shit about financial responsibility. They're always the ones to completely fuck up the budget.

Not that stupid. But they are that stubborn. Be prepared.

If I hear nothing has happened by the time I get off work tomorrow, I think I'm going to go buy a knife, machete and any other camping survival gear and spend the rest of the night learning how to survive in the wild.

I wish I was kidding, but this shit is getting old and I'm gonna hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Red and sweet are good to eat, but I swear by this sonnet, green will make you vomit.

Yeah, Boner really has no choice but to bring the Senate bill up for vote.

That's what was going to happen anyway. Even if the House bill was put up for a vote, and passed, it would still get rejected in the Senate and then he'd have no choice but up put up a Senate bill anyway, which we all know will pass.

Deal to extend is almost certain to happen by Thursday.

Nobody wants to live with this burden.

This stopped being about what's "best for everyone" over a week ago.
This is all about the Tea Party getting "something" (doesn't matter what) out of this.
Even though all they deserve is to have cow dung shoved down their throat for eternity.

President Obama on Tuesday defended his efforts to compromise, and said the problem lies in House Speaker John Boehner's inability to control Republican House members.

"The problem that we’ve got is that for Speaker Boehner, for example, him negotiating with me isn’t necessarily good for the extreme faction in his caucus. It weakens him," Obama said in an interview with New York's WABC. "So there’ve been repeated situations where we have agreements, then he goes back and it turns out that he can’t control his caucus."

"The challenge here is: Can you deliver on agreements that are made? Are you able to come up with sensible, bipartisan compromises and deliver on them?" the president asked, suggesting he's been able to do it, while Boehner has struggled. "One thing that I’ve shown is that if I say I’m pre

No doubt they dont care about the people, but they do care about their own image.

Their image would be fucked to the point where republicans would be a dead party if this happened. They know this so a deal will happen.

They are crazy, but they are not stupid to this fact. Expect a last minute deal.
