New Ryse: Son of Rome story trailer [new footage]

In my book Trolling is turning up in a thread for game for a console you refuse to continence and then picking holes in said game, not defending a game you are interested in on a console you are buying!

This is some massively flawed logic. There are great things about both consoles currently, regardless of which one you choose. That being said, I am not happy with what MS tried to do this gen from a policy standpoint. It could have massively hurt the industry as a whole had no one took the time to criticize it. I'd argue that if it werent for those criticizing the x1 it would have been a completely nonviable console ecosystem that failed hard. And it may have led others to follow suit with the anti consumers practices in the unlikely case had they been successful.

I see this game from a similar perspective. It was once an on rails Kinect game that was all production value and no substance. They've moved away from that to try to appease the hardcore, but the substance of the game still appears to be paper thin. So, while I think the technology behind the graphics is quite extraordinary, the game must be criticized for the gameplay as shown so far. If games like this do well, they will continue to make more of them at the expense of actually good mid tier games.

You cannot have the sweet without the sour. We are always better off with the debate over the circle jerk. This goes for all games on all platforms.

I appreciate the criticism for all games on all platforms, including genuine x1 guys criticizing bad ps4 games with flaws or bad direction, especially in the gameplay department. Some guys who do it right are Statham (x1), Miles Quaritch (x1), Nib95 (on the Sony side), etc.

well I finally had the chance to watch the trailer in my 55" Sammy ES6750, and wow, wow, it looks glorious. can't say anything more that you already have said guys, now I'm tempted to get it at launch besided DR3.

however I must say the trailer lacks of soul, the narrator sounds boring, I wish MS/Crytek would have produced a good trailer as MS did with Gears of War

Nor am I. We are agreed on all counts to a point. Where it ends for me is that it is all about the games. I don't have to love Microsoft, but I am not going to let spite stop me from enjoying games I want to play. The fact that they have changed course due to pressure makes this easier for me as well. At the end of the day, it's all about enjoying games that interest me and that is why I always end up owning more than one console.

In addition to my venomous stance against Microsoft, I have also been highly critical of this game until this trailer. While it does not look like it is going to do anything particularly amazing in the gameplay department, it still looks like it will be a standard, but fun hack n' slash experience with some flashy attacks, an interesting story and some amazing production values.

If that is indeed what it is, then so what? That does not mean it will set a precedent to destroy gaming or the action genre in general if it does well. As there has always been games with average mechanics, but flashy visuals and interesting stories alongside games that focus more on a deeper gameplay experience. There is room at the table for both and neither is going to destroy the approach of the other.

Game is looking a lot more fun. Not totally impressed with the graphics as they haven't really shown off any massive environments, just some small arena type levels. Or maybe I missed it.

Also the story looks like straight up "serious" garbage. Gettin' those LAIR flashbacks. Why can't some storylines just have a sense of joy/fun to them?

All in all I'm pretty impressed, it went from looking like a launch dud to a guilty pleasure launch game like Knack.

I don't know. I'm worried with guys like Shu Yoshida saying that mid tier games basically won't exist anymore, as they are being squeezed out by these 900 person dev team "aaa" endeavors.

So just preordered this. Not a fan of the supernatural elements, but this game is still a looker and will go nicely with Forza along side my Xbox One.

BF4 and Killzone on my PS4.

I will be in gamin bliss next month.

Its set in ancient rome, in a war, about a guy who has his family murdered, what were you expecting kittens and unicorns?

And nothing about this game should be compared to Lair.

If games like RE6 are any indication, that bloated team with too many hands in the pot philosophy ultimately runs a huge risk of being self defeating. As development costs skyrocket, I can actually see more and more trimming the fat down to a core, but focused team. Of course giant teams and bloated budgets will be there for the foreseeable future, I still don't see it as a threat to anything but itself in the long run.

I agree, that's the difference between some of the posters on here. As I've said countless times, preferences are only natural. I'm not going to even pretend I don't have my own. But what annoys me is trolling or outright unashamed support of a platform without even a hint of opposition or criticism. I routinely post negative opinions about Sony, it's policies or whatever, despite many feeling I don't. I will not ever be shy to point out something I'm disappointed or pissed off about, for any side or platform. But honestly speaking, there's some posters on here from whom I've never ever seen a negative post towards their favoured side. Sort of like a, their shit can never stink type attitude, and I find it hilarious. To me it doesn't even seem natural or human, it's like some automated drone like support that never falters or stumbles. It's bizarre.

But anyway, OT.

I believe the word you mean't to use was "countenance". Just saying...

Mid-tier will continue to exist but the marketplace has changed. You'll get them as downloadable games (like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon/Call of Juarez Gunslinger).
They'll be made but I think developers will feel less pressure to provide a "total package" with tacked on multiplayer etc.

Looking at stuff like Crimson Dragon at $20 is the sort of thing I'm talking about (though i've not been too impressed with CD personally) regarding next-gen and pricing, will get smaller and bigger games from there. Theres lots of space for these sorts of games with the pricing so I think we'll see lots of games like that but it might just take a while.

It hurts on 2 fronts though: in order to make back the initial massive investment, numerous sequels are needed, which also sucks because it comes at the expense of new ips anytime except at the beginning oh a generation. Then, of course there is the canabalizing of money and dev resources that would have went to a wide variety of mid tier projects with smaller dev teams, as I have already mentioned. I hope it gets better, but if it's not going to be for a while, things are going to continue to suck for a while. I mean do I only get to look forward to one dark/ demon souls-esque game a generation going forward?

I feel like the distinction between speaking on behalf of something you enjoy and actively working to criticize something you (categorically) don't has gone over your head.

Yeah a more apt comparison might be heavenly sword, which was a beautiful but average to mediocre game.

I have a novel idea: Before making qualitative judgement about any game, it might make sense to wait until the game is actually played to completion by someone, be it first-hand from people here or even professional reviews.

You make some valid points with the trade-off of fewer quality games from smaller teams. Especially in terms of games that get annualized at the expense of said games and milked until it makes you cringe to even see a screenshot.

This is a cycle we are still very much in and smaller budget titles that do get released tend to get swallowed up in all the hype until someone creates another hit from out of nowhere. But then it's a rare thing for a game like Demon's Souls to come out of left field and blindside everyone the way it did anyway.

So, you enjoy this game even though it's not out and most people who have played preview builds have complained about the gameplay? No, I don't believe it has gone over my head. Toughen up. This board is not for the light hearted.

My goodness. Ryse is looking better and better everytime I see it (at least the singleplayer, anyway...not a fan of what I've seen of the multiplayer thus far). Crytek always knows how to craft visually stunning games, and Ryse is yet another notch under the belt.

So, this logic stands with games like too human, which were duds when previewed and duds when they came out? I mean some reservation needs to take place (as I've said before, I hope they fix the gameplay). But going on past experience with these things and the time many have had with the game, it is not a massive leap of faith to believe the game may not be all that. That said, it sure is pretty.

And with that, I have said my part...I feel like I'm getting sucked into tangential conversation. Thanks to SenjestsuSage for the convo on gameplay.

I played the game yesterday and I thought it was loads of fun and, for what it's worth, the Ryse demo stations were always packed with people.

Agree. It looks gorgeous. I have been on vacation all week, but coming home later tonight and have not been able to see a proper 1080p version of the video, mainly due to shitty hotel internet. So cannot wait till I get home to check this out on a proper connection. From what I seen it looks mighty tasty.

Yeah, there's a direct feed link in the OP now. I assure you, it's damn fine.

You will not be playing the same game that was previewed at E3. It can go two ways, the game has improved or it has remain the same. You have chosen the pessimistic point of view that it has not improve. Nothing wrong with that. Others are a bit more optimistic. To me the game looks fun. And I am looking forward to it.

By the way, you are spreading FUD that games like this will kill mid tier gaming. Which is a real stretch. Mid-tier gaming suffered last-gen due to $60 dollars game prices. With better digital stores this gen, they should be priced accordingly.

This game reminds me of the Tomb Raider threads. People want so bad to this game bomb.

Hope it gets the same end as TR. Because, you know. I want good games. Not otherwise.

Funny that in other platforms is the opposite. Everything shows that a game is not in a good sharp, but people want to believe it will be good.

You enter in a Forza thread and its all whinning, even people almost praying for a announcement of a delay. its hilarious.

Oh, do tell.
You attack, block, shield bash, and dodge. Different situations required different strategies.

The grunts you can pretty much just slash away at, but in groups, they attack you from all angles and you have to block them and crowd control them.
You had to successfully block and counter the enemy with the two flaming swords, as he dodges your attacks really well.
There is a barbarian using a shield who will block your attacks, so you have to shield bash him to open him up.

There was an archer who shot flaming arrows. I blocked one of his arrows and it ricocheted off my shield and into an enemy approaching me from the side.
I once dodged his arrow by rolling out of the way and it hit one of the enemies behind me.

There are various objectives you have to do as the rounds progress.
There are traps you can use against enemies or control groups with.
There were spears you could pick up to use as range attacks..

It was pretty cool. I'm not sure where all the complaints come from.

Console wars...

Do you have the configurations of the button controls? Just one preview that I read talked about that. "Y" is for the shield attack right? What button does the roll?

Hopefully I'll get to test the game next week.

Sounds like it will be fun to play indeed. Add in the eye candy, great voice acting and interesting story in an ancient Roman setting and it's all I could really ask for. Thanks for the impressions.

Yes, it does stand to that logic. Declaring that a game is bad (and which poorly recieved games it's most similar to) as you have, before the game is completed (both in terms of development and in terms of anyone having had the opportunity to play it fully) is silly. As I said: actively criticizing any game in those terms is problematic.

A game should be finished and played by someone before it's dismissed.

I believe how it went was...
X attack, A block, Y bash, B dodge.
Right trigger execute (only did it once), left trigger to pull out and aim spear..

One of the bumpers was your god power.. Each god power had a different effect.
The ones I saw were knock back enemies around you, damage enemies around you, slow down enemies around you.

There was also a menu option to customize your character but we couldn't access it.

The few Xbox gamers are hiding here and in the Forza thread.
Exclusidng HaloGaf ofc, they just don't give a shit,

And in KI threads. Project Spark, Crimsom Dragon, Dead Rising 3. They just dont went to PS4 threads like sony warriors enjoy so much doing in xbox threads. And of course like you said, there's just a few nowadays compared to the sony troop.

Do you need to go back to yours 12yrs old if you want to enjoy a xbox thread.

Thanks. How the execution thing works? You mean, you press RT when that icon appears over the enemy head?

Put the deposit down today for Xbox, there is going to be too many games I will miss out on if I don't buy it. Will compliment my PS4 very nicely indeed.

Didn't they remove chariot racing from this? So it's likely the game could have been so much better then how it looks at the moment.
