Tons of articles all over the internet and tons of prior threads here asking about just that, though. Maybe it's just the way that it's being asked that bugs me, or that it's so lazy.

You could consider it a compliment that a person comes to GAF for that advice instead of a random Internet article. Plus, you can have back and forth with the suggestors.

I have gone to the gaming side for this kind of advice in a while but it was something I liked about GAF a lot.

I suppose so. It is different than gaming side's flavor of the month mentality with newer releases, I guess.

Something I'm growing to dislike every time I see it are fake edits. What's the point?

Do people who use them not have a large enough command of the English language to explain when their train of thought has changed? Is there some extra meaning to a paragraph following "edit:" that gives it extra weight?

I don't even understand what a fake edit is.

I think he means where they just hit enter a couple of times and then put 'edit:'. I think edit should be reserved for (besides the obvious situations) when you've reflected upon your statement and get a new perspective from that, or something similar. Definitely not in mid-post

One thing that's started to annoy me lately is the kind of black and white, amazing or complete trash, approach some people seem to take in regards to their comments about a subject. No in-between, only varying degrees of hyperbole.

Otherwise many of the things said here. Signing posts in particular has been awful since the beginning of the internet.

Thread titles that go like "Is [noun] the most [superlative adjective] [noun] ever?!"

For example:

"Are cats the best pets ever?!"

"Is mayonnaise the most disgusting food ever?!"

"Is Kanye the best hiphop artist and best husband to a big-bottomed lady ever?!"

OP has a strong opinion and wants to start a controversial thread. Voila.

You have a small time period where you can edit after posting without it saying "edited by so and so [time]" so that's where most "fake edits" tend to occur. Kind of like an after thought.[/QUOTE] But some people literally type "fakeedit:" before their afterthought. If it's a legitimate edit, why not just type "edit:"? If it's an afterthought, but going to be included in the original post, why not write it the same way it would have been written originally?[/time]

Ok honestly I had a pet peeve for a bit about the whole "Can we talk about so and so?"

that just irked me it's so weird!

Some I've seen on other boards:

"signatures" - Not an actual sig formatted into the board code, but people signing every post manually.

roleplayers - People playing the role of a licensed character in every single thread.

very valid question. Not sure. I'm guilty of it. I guess I use it as a way to discern different points. Like if I say one thing then a minute after realize something else not entirely related to my point, then I will 'fake edit' as a way to make it seem like I'm not negating myself or to completely separate different thoughts.

"i'm going numb and i'm bleeding profusely from my anus. what should i do, GAF?"

OT in general is a mess of people without any sort of basic social, employable or life skills at all.

It's petty, but I hate thread titles that are questions which aren't the real point, such as

"Does anybody like Wim Wenders movies?"

Well, obviously the answer is yes.

Or

"Anybody else get migraines?"

It's not that it'ls offensive or anything, but I always have the urge to answer literally. Just title the damn thread with an actual title!

That's the minority.

The diversity of intelligence (and quality of moderation of) is probably the reason why we all are here and not somewhere else.

Ugh. STOP.

(Obviously not GAF-related though)

One thing that's really gotten on my nerves lately is the gif of Bugs Bunny cutting off Florida. When I first saw it, I thought it was hilarious. Now, two years and about a billion times seeing it later, I roll my eyes every time somebody posts it.

It seems like threads that start with something involving a popular or known personality devolve and diverge toward arguments about the legitimacy of the original issue or person's opinions based on something that doesn't really apply to the situation. For example:

"TotalBiscuit says his video was taken down by a developer's false copyright claim."
"Oh yea? Well, he's an asshole."

"Rashida Jones says female celebrities should 'stop acting like whores.'"
"Oh yea? She's only successful because of nepotism."

While the responses might have truth or merit, they are more or less irrelevant to what the intended purpose of such threads seems to be, whether it's talking about developers censoring bad reviews or high profile female celebrities setting poor examples for young people who look up to them.

I just don't understand how people's brains work and how these types of threads progress the way they do. It's like there's all this anger just waiting to be released. Basically, instead of talking about the actual issue people just focus on the person involved.

The second hypothetical is fine sometimes. What's annoying is when the tc asks "am I the only one _____?".

"Blah blah sure is looking good lately" except it's a ruse to post unflattering pics of an otherwise fine looking human being.

Actually I abhor the regular threads with nice looking pics because it's just a giant circle jerk filled with "dayum, nice tits, would fuck, 0/10"

I have no idea what is with this trend of threads, especially for female celebrities. Just make the thread title what it is, not some bullshit sarcasm. You think they don't look Photoshop Perfect™ in the photos you post then outright say it in the title.

"Gee, look at this celebrity GAF, let's shit all over her and show how much of a tard we are"

Clearly there are some great people here, but GAF can be pretty shallow at times.

I don't like it when people call other people Sony ponies and xbots. It's rude.

On a related note, certain posters trying to rile up shit. It's easy to see in Gaming (you know who they are), and most of the time they get away with that. I recall that thread about increasing allowable SD Card usage for 3DS and one guy keeps baiting shit like how no one would use it anyway. I find it weird that that person hasn't seen a ban or a warning even.

Sadly it seems OT isn't spared by that behavior too. Derailing a discussion which doesn't even involve tipping or circumcision...

I hate how uber PC this board has become. Unless it's reverse then it's okay. Poetic justice and all that.

THE OT:
- Attention whores when something bad happen. There's a big gun shooting? "OMG GAWD I KNOW A DISTANT COUSIN WHO DROVE THERE ONCE IN 1993" ... Seriously....
- "This" "IM DEAD", "SLAYED" .. just Go away with that shit
- Racism/Transgender issues warriors who bring up their cause or try to turn almost every thread in the OT into arguments about their cause. Seriously people! There's a time and a place for everything.
People who post lyrics as replies. O_O
- The pun crew. But their reign of lameness is coming to an end
- Super oversensative people. "OMg I wont watch this video because there's a dog in the background and he looks sad! NOT WATCHING" .. Thanks for informing all of us that you wont be watching the video. Really thx
- Gaming Section -- People who make new threads everytime some youtube guy or a podcast idiot releases a new episode.

Gaming Section:
- People pretending to be tech experts when they know shit
- The constant wave of revisionists about console history. Shut up you were 10 when the gamecube came out; stop pretending
- Really crappy photoshops.
- "Industry insiders"
- People who turn into "thread superstars" and post updates every 2 minutes. "TODAY I PLAYED DIABLO3, YEP YEP IM MY 4TH RUN AS A MAGE, BEEN PLAYING 15 HOURS IN A ROW NOW", yo thx for the riveting update
- Idiotic pc gamers who are misleading other gaffers with their "mah 5 years old 500$ setup runs the latest game just fineeeeee" and act like their rigs are super powerful. They are not, your pc setup is embarrassing and you have to run everything on pedestrians settings.
- People who buy 200$ arcade sticks and mod them with an extra 150$ worth of parts.

I hate those little reaction heads that people post, they're so dumb.
People typing in 'street language'. You might pronounce 'this' and 'that' as 'dis' and 'dat' in your day to day life, but you must understand that your vocal mangling of words is signifying an actual written language underneath it. You know the words, use them.
Use of terms like "throwing shade" or "salty".

Language evolves.

Language evolves.

Or devolves as the case may be. When dumb alternate spellings of commonplace words make it into the dictionary then we can talk. And as said, I understand that spoken language is different. If people want to walk around talking like they never read a book then that's fine, more power to them. But when you're communicating in a written medium write using a proper language rather than ignoring your spellcheck because it's cool.

It's cool to go PC these days. All the cool kids indie games are there now. You want to play them on PC before they are ported to consoles so you can say "I played this before it was cool".

No it just evolves. Pretty much all languages have been simplified, save for some archaic ones.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL/DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^that

If you're asking for medical advice on the Internet, that should be the only response.

A real diagnosis and suggestion for treatment comes after taking a medical history, evaluating the medicine a patient takes, a physical examination, and careful study of test results. Be wary of doctors who give diagnoses without these, and especially ones who offer medical analysis without, you know, any real analysis.

The pun brigade and all the ensuing "first post wins etc etc" bs. Mainly though just the need for people to have to post some kind of joke or pun in the first few posts. It is getting as bad as a "first post!" kind of thing.

I saw this post in a thread...

Hey, any chance you could be more of a passive-agressive dick?

Say it or shut the fuck up, don't offer backhand insincere apologies so that you can get your little "I want to say something, but..." comment in.

And while I don't agree with the entire post, the quote explains my view on passive aggressive posting styles perfectly.

Good God, I couldn't agree more with this post. Seeing a topic get derailed because of puns is cringe-inducing.
