This is something I'm trying to avoid doing myself, but I dislike posting a comment or participating in a conversation, then just abandoning the thread forever. I feel like if you post outside of a simple reaction like "oh this is cool!" and you say something that you know is going to be responded to, you should return and continue the conversation.
Random American politics discussion:
GAF: "Bah! The damn science ignorant GOP is going to ruin this country by cramming the Bible down everyone's throats! They're practically holding the country hostage with their ignorance!"
Poll showing Tea Party supporters being more scientifically literate:
GAF: "Pfft, so one poll is enough to prove anything now huh?"
Confirmation bias is a helluva drug folks.

I totally agree. Asking for information before going to the doctor is a good idea, yet there is always a deluge of "OMG you are so stupid, stop posting on GAF and go the the hospital immediately."
An informed patient is a better patient.
The GOP is not the Tea Party, and I hate it when people try to prove that GAF is a single being that is engaged in constant hypocrisy.

- When I came back off that year ban, I made a thread saying pun-age was shit and I got shouted down by the masses. A good pun has its place, but everywhere is nowhere.

For all the dislike or hatred of reddit around these parts, some threads share similarities in how the puns and "first" posts dominate the early discussion. I don't mind it, but it's just a small bit of irony or humorous observation.

I dislike when people get overly pedantic about simple generalisations. Everyone knows what you mean when you say that "GAF prefers the PS4 over the XB1". Why do I have to preface it with "I have noticed that in general"? Yet at the same time if you say GAF's game of the year 2012 was Journey ,nobody bat's an eyelid. No one believes in a hive mind, but it is very startling when the general opinion of a place shifts rapidly thus saying "GAF hated X now it loves X", is a perfectly reasonable statement.

Yeah, this can irritate me. Same with "dat", "am I the only one or..." and posts that are intentionally typed out to parody all caps and poor grammar. HOW IS THIS FUNNY?!!1oneone!!
Another thing, it seemed fun and harmless when I first started posting, but I really am disliking how an entire thread loses a lot of its potential discussion based on the first post. It happens too much. Finally, this thread is an example of many posters who just went straight for derailment instead of actually discussing the topic. A moderator had to clean up the entire thread, and it then quietly died off.
"When it's clear that you've got a zinger at the ready after having only read the title, it can easily derail any possibility at earnest conversation, which is regrettable."
It's especially irritating as those posters are most definitely not interested in actual discussion of the topic.

It drives me nuts when a thread is only a few pages long, has a resolution before the last page, and someone quotes the OP offering advice. I was just looking at this thread and by the third page the OP has gone from wondering how to have friends with benefits action with a girl to having said action. What's on page 4? Posts of people recognizing that he's had sex and posts of people still offering advice on how to get said sex by quoting the damn OP.
For a thread that short just read the last fucking page before posting to see where the discussion is, how hard is that?!

I can empathize, but quoting (and getting quoted) is a huge part of the GAF metagame. To me posts like that have always been less about "look at me, I agree with this guy" and more about "hey dude, good/funny/smart post, I'm going to quote it."

It seems like a lot of what you guys complain about are just natural ways to stand out on a discussion board where all you have is an avatar, the same font, the same gray color to set yourself apart.
So of course there's gonna be some decoration and character to the discussions.
Should everyone just post neat polite well formed sentences like a bunch of robots? Sorry but if that's the case, I'm out. I like that humans have personalities.

The leet smileys. If someone winked at me after every sentence like a good number of people do here, I would think they were weirdos and would make sure to not talk to them ever again. It isn't cute or particularly friendly, it just makes me think of older guys on the internet who think that is a cool thing to do to make you seem hip and young.

I get that. It always conveys a weird and awkward tone. I imagine all of those people to be the same ones who use huzzah and good sir in real life.

That happens every time Penny Arcade Report (the news section that's separate from PA Comic) gets a thread. People don't even read what is written, they see the words "Penny Arcade" and make a dash to post shit about the comic guys.
It's times like this that make me think having a 2-sentence minimum on GAF would make the place better. I know it would never happen, but if people actually had to think before posting it might help.

This post is a perfect example of something I seriously dislike: treating "GAF" as a single person, or a hivemind.
GAF is a discussion forum. Nothing more, and nothing less. If you want, you can single out the posters who said what you're complaining about, but saying that's GAF's opinion or stance, as if it was a sentient entity, is plainly wrong. And I find it funny how those persons don't consider themselves part of said "GAF" thingy.

It would be nice if these boards had a better way of seeing when threads had been posted in.
In particular, sorting posting history by what threads had been posted in most recently, as opposed to just what threads you had posted in recently.
As an example, I had posted in this thread before, but, it's so far back in my posting history that I wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't been at the top of the boards right now when I happened to be looking.
If anyone has a better way to keep track of when threads get posted in (other than subscribing to every thread one posts in) let me know.
What you're describing is what you get when you turn on subscribing to threads you post in and then click control panel.
