Batman: Arkham Origins Review Thread

Too bad about that handheld version. Sorry Armature Studios. I wonder how the game would have turned out if they were Retro proper still under Nintendo's wing? Could have been great?
 
lol at the scores, game is fantástic and better than the last 2 ones in almost everything incluidng mechanics. But it's not call of duty so no great scores.

This (fantástic) game has "Fan Favorite" all over it, word of mouth will save it.
 
Still looking forward to playing it next weekend while on vacation. Will be a much needed distraction from life. Between this and GTA 5 should be 5 awesome days of gaming. Sounds like the combat is still there and the story is good so it is all good for me and my friend who is coming up for a gaming vacation.

Rocksteady didn't fuck up, on the contrary. They did so well that they got themselves more time and money to work on their next-gen debut. In the meantime we're getting this game because people will buy more of the same.

I could understand your frustration if this negatively affected Rocksteady's output in any way but to me this is the best of both worlds, really. Rocksteady gets money and time to work on an innovative new game and we get Origins to ease the wait. I'm not buying this one day 1, but I'll get it as soon as it goes on sale.

He said it's almost the best game in the series and the writing/story and characters/boss fights are the best in the series for sure but the game is held back by being more of the same and a lot of it at that

It's kinda bad when all these reviews complain it's not innovative or doesn't add much new to the series but will give all the regulars an easy time with that (CoD Ghosts,BF4,AC IV)
 
i think the reviews's negative of more fights is what i gather as a positive.

hated how it was just challenge rooms and very end game in AA AC where you fight a fair amount of guys at once.
 
I only got to play about an hour this morning before I had to head in to work.

Playing on the PC, obviously the first thing that grabs you is the quality of the lighting and shadowing is a notch up from AC, which already looked fantastic. Animations are nice and smooth as well, and the little bit of the snow deformation and turbulence/physx effects I saw were amazing. The cape is more intricate, well animated, and realistic than it's ever been.

The combat mechanics themselves don't appear to have changed at all, at least this early in the game, which is good. I love the Batman combat mechanics, and new combat animations add even more variety and flair to Batman's ass kicking for justice!

I'll comment on the story as I get a little bit further in, but so far, I'm having lots of fun. Can't wait to get home and continue!
 
Kind of the reviews I was expecting. I didn't see the game being as good as the past 2. I'll most likely pick it up when it's on sale for cheap though. Kind of wish they had a PS4 version coming out. I probably would've been more excited if it came out there.

Has rocksteady announced what they are working on next, or any hints? I true next gen Batman would be pretty awesome.
 
So does this mean Miyamoto should get more credit for Metroid Prime?

Also, this is what happens when you start milking a series, like God of War Ascension basically.
 
Not going to dig into the reviews after i beat it. But i'm confused with the short summaries.
AC-Great game 10/10
AO-meh just another AC 7/10

From day 1 it seemed like this was just a filler game to hold us over. A bit surprised anyone expected anything else. But i guess i'll see.
 
It's been said but that IGN pizza quote is just dumb... even if this is the worst Arkham game it would still be one of the best Batman games ever. Did they forget how horrible Batman games were before this series?

Anyway more of the same doesn't bother me but i'm surprised it is being treated so harshly in reviews. A 6 or a 7 is a pretty damning score. I've only played an hour or so I can't really say it's deserving of a better or worse score, but I really like what I've played. It seems harder than AA/AC. And dare I say so far I prefer this cast of voice actors.
 
Scores are basically exactly what I expected. Nothing new or special about Origins, just another Arkham game. I'll wait til its nice a cheap in that case. Too bad about the Vita scores, sounds like its worse than I was hoping.

I wouldn't give it a 10 because of some rough edges (most don't interfere with gameplay), they are

- Clipping. The cape clips through enemies, you can walk past the not combating characters. The Rocksteady games didn't have that problem.
- Transition animations: Batman's neck has a werid reaction when he goes from "posing" to "talking".
- Gamma is botched on 360. For some reason.
- Camera is not that well positioned in those "final punch" slowmos.
- There are amazing bossfights, but 2 or them are, well, past Akham Quality. It's a step up though.

That's the thing, the game perhaps shares flaws with the past 2 ones, and because of that it's not a 10/10, but it polishes things that needed it and improves greatly things like story, buff models (no more Hulk Gordon!) and boss fights, while keeping the great world and detail.

I'd give it a YES/10

it really is a tiresome mechanic. so glad GTA5 didn't stoop that low.

How hard is it to make a solid MetroVania clone? Just copying the old Metroid and IgaVanias and replacing it with Batman should've been good enough.

Disapointing. Could've been the best MetroVania clone. Had the potential.

I loved it in Assassin's Creed up to Revelations, but since then it has become annoying (especially the tree vantage points in AC3). AC4 will have them for sure, but I hope they are more interesting and varied than ACR and AC3.
 
Kind of what I was expecting, but I honestly thought I'd see more 8's. Perhaps when more scores come out, it'll trend more that way.

From the OT, I'm seeing people really enjoy the game but that it doesn't break new ground. Just refinements.

I'll probably wait a month for the price to dip to the $40 range before I bite, but it sounds like a solid game.
 
Jesus, I find those reviews overly critical for the sake of it. Every single one of them proclaims City to be a wonderful game, and yet they chastise this one for following its lead. Prior to release, the overwhelming consensus was that we should all be worried about the new Batman Arkham game coming from this new, untested development studio. Post release it's shown that they did a fantastic job keeping in line with the expectations of the series, but apparently they were expected to innovate greatly as well?

Well, what about the extraordinarily cool detective sequences that flush out the brainy side of the protagonist? What about the gigantic city that necessitates the appropriate use of a Batwing fast travel system? And, sure, perhaps multiplayer cannot be reviewed properly, but that doesn't mean it should be discounted entirely. It's still additional content on top of a beefy single player experience.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my time with this game so far. The presentation is frankly breath taking, and the gameplay is ever so slightly refined. I just find it quite sad that so many reviewers, amidst the hype of next gen have sent this fantastic title out to die with their silly 7s and the notion that if Rocksteady isn't making it, it must be second rate despite the content in front of them.
 
I'm playing through the game and frigging LOVING it!

I don't really understand the low scores though, as of now it's the best Batman game from the series, it just seems like everyone hates it because it's more of the same, well if these people give Arkham City 10/10 then I don't see why more of same 10/10 experience is a bad thing. I also think these people don't understand the fact that this is a new studio making a Batman game, so they are under a lot of pressure to NOT change anything and royally piss off the fans of these games.

Anyways, it's a great game in my opinion and I don't think that the score of the game should be artificially lowered just because it's not radically different from previous game.
 
So there are no reviews for the Wii U version? More great Wii U support from third parties, I guess. I can't even find it for sale at a Target within 20 miles of me.

the problem with 3 was i'm pretty sure there were repeating trees and vantage point layouts.

if each traversal was unique, i wouldn't mind much... but yeah.
 
So I come in here expecting 8 or 9's from what I played last night and see the game getting blasted by reviewers? REALLY? Going from what I have read one of the main complaints is that the game is to much like the previous games. REALLY? Ok then I expect COD to get terrible ratings since its been the same old shit for years!

Nah that wont happen, games like CoD and Assassins Creed can't possibly be rated low even though they are identical to their predecessors in every way shape and form.
 
After about an hour or so playing it, it's more of the same but that isn't a bad thing. I think it's awesome that in this point of the universe, people don't know who or what batman is. Pretty awesome to save some one and have them begging to live because they are scared of you. I like it and I think anyone who liked the other arkham games will too!
 
I'm reading through these reviews, and honestly... this game sounds like a ton of fun. Getting it today after work. Only disappointment is that certain aspects of the story are thrown away and forgotten about in favour of more

I just want to play as an early, more mysterious Batman. The fact that they kept the way it plays intact instead of changing everything does not bother me. As that is why the previous two were received so well to begin with. Besides, it is only the third game in the series. Is it really already old, when we were praising it in the previous two games?
 
The cutscenes are awesome but on PC the quality is fucking horrible. I'd expected more than blurry 720p cutscenes...

Yeah, the actual presentation of Arkham City was dramatically better. The proper introduction of AC was all realtime and interactive while Origins starts off with a lengthy FMV (though I suppose that was true of the first game as well). Still, they mostly avoided crappy videos for all but a few scenes in City.
 
Friend is having problems with falling through world geometry as well as enemies and objects disappearing, anyone else experiencing this?
edit: Oops, I meant to post this in the OT.
 
Odd how certain games get docked for being too familiar, but CoD/Madden/BF/AC are on iteration #8-25 and still score well.

I thought 3 was more fun than 2 overall. The second one really bogs down at times, like in the Himalayas.
 
Sounds like a good game, but I'm not going to bust down any doors trying to get a copy. These things always drop in price, so I'll wait a bit.

I still have a lot of Riddler challenges left in Arkham City anyway.
 
This game is teaching me that I'm a lot more accepting than some of publishers putting out games in between major revolutions of a franchise as a way of delivering a new story and fresh levels, and making more money back on their investment before the tech gets canned. Loved Bioshock 2, Uncharted 3, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Rev, God Of War ascension and I'm really digging this. Unless a game is actually bad ie. not fun, I can be happy just getting to experience more of my favourite franchises every year or two, as well as getting those big big revolution entries every 3-4 years.

EDIT And that is absoltuely not a slight on anyone else and I totally get why others might not feel that way - just seems I'm learning I like these games where others don't.
