Nvidia slashes prices on GeForce GTX 780 and GTX 770 GPUs

Yeah AMD's (well ATI then) drivers were pretty poor in the past, but they've worked hard to fix that. They're still not perfect as Crossfire isn't fixed on multimonitor setups but considering where they were say 2 years ago they've made great strides forward.

I'm not so sure. I have bought only Radeon for the last 6 years because they offered me better value.

But I now haev a 7970 and I'm thinking about upgrading.

290x for $550 or a 780 for the same price is something to seriously consider, especially when the 780 comes with Asssins Creed IV, Batman Origins, and Splinter Cell. I have NONE of those three games and I am interested in all of them. In fact, I was guarnateed to buy ACIV on launch so I might as well knock $60 off those prices. I am also actually interested in the Shield as the idea of streaming Steam games to my couch while I watch the news/tv is very very appealing. Nvidia now gives $100 off the shield bringing it down to $199 with these cards.

Given the temp and noise advantage of the 780 (and the more room for overclocking) I would say having it at the same price as a 290X makes the two fairly even competition. The 3 game bundle and the $100 off shield coupon pushes it over the top for me.

The only questions I have now are 1) the range and reliability of the Shield and 2) whether or not I really want to bother with an upgrade. The 7970 has done me nice so far.

Yeah that's pretty pricy. I wonder what will happen to the Titan though. Nvidia hasn't announced a price drop on that yet. Or is the titan essentially going to be a compute card.

I think you confused the 680 with the 780.

A 680 isn't really an 'upgrade' over a 7970, though.

And a 290X is not competing with 680's. Its in a different league.

I've a GTX 670 CUII and an i5 3570k so would it be feasible for me to get a 4GB GTX 770 and get 120 fps?
I ask because i have one of the Asus 27" 1920x1080 120hz monitors and i'd like to get consistently buttery smooth framerates as the 670 drops to 90 at times.

I've had it for about a month and a half and it's done everything I need it to. Probably won't won't hold up great if you go above 1080p though(Haven't tried that and probably won't either).

that wasn't an issue with the Nvidia drivers, your 8800 was just dying lol. Failure rates on those are close to 360 levels, same issue with the solder too!

I'm wondering how much I can get for my (watercooled) 670 SLI setup ? A couple of 780 Classifieds would be nice ... Not that I really need the performance but hey

Except I donated my old build to my dad and it still works. He's on XP and doesn't really play intensive games (mainly MOH:AA). If it did go bust like most of the G92 (G80 too?) cards did back in the day, I would've gotten artifacts and way more BSODs or the card would've been straight up dead.
 
This is why competition matters and a monopoly would be terrible. Keep that in mind, fanboys.


As an Nvidia user, I genuinely thank AMD for showing up and lighting a fire under Nvidia's ass with the excellent R9 series cards.

I think in most places the R9 280X it is cheaper. And the 280x has been release very recently and may still decrease in price. I know there are still 7970s for sale that are as powerful but still cheaper.

It's a mainly sideways step to go to a 770.

Tried overclocking both your CPU and GPU?
 
Yeah, just bought a 780 in august, but missing the price drop doesn't bother me too much. Hopefully more people can jump into upgrading their computers at a slightly better price :)
 
Just bought a 760 (MSI N760 one) so I was scared for a moment but I only paid 200 euros for it so I can't be bothered by this drop. Still 80 euros more for a 770.
 
$500 for a 780...wow. That's awesome. Competition rocks!

Sucks for me though, sold my 780 to my buddy last week but haven't shipped it out (have to test it along with a bunch of other components I'm selling). So I'm cutting another $50 off the agreed price. Damn you, NVIDIA! ;)

Can it handle most games with all the bells up at 60fps?

I can live without the most expensive AA... but i'm curious about soft shadows and tesselations and physx which i've never really messed with.

From what I've read an OC'd 780 will run everything that's out right now over 60 FPS at 1440. But I don't know how it'll handle games like Watch_Dogs, AC4 and stuff like The Witcher 3 next year.

I'm really tempted to grab a 780, my 680 isn't cutting it at 1440p at the moment, but I'm just not totally convinced yet.
 
So is the 770 2gb at $330 better than a 4 gb 760 for a die-hard Nvidia guy? My friend wont go AMD, I know the 280x is a better deal. I am just not sure if 2 gb RAM is enough to last 3+ years (he doesn't upgrade his GPU often).
 
Even the first beta release of Shadowplay seems to already get the results I want, so that price cut on the 770 is pretty tempting. I was planning to get a 760, but I could go for $50 more I guess. While I'd like to wait for Maxwell, I don't really have a GPU at the moment so I kinda need something.

It'll save me on having to buy a capture card anyway. AMD has started to lose me the moment they broke downsampling (and have no intention to properly support it!) and began to chase stuff like Mantle. I don't really support those decisions at all, and the stuff on the Nvidia side seems trivial to implement for all software that already exists.

Dat G-Sync as well is the best innovation I've seen in a long time.

I've got one 680 as well and I play at 2560x1600. Generally dropping a setting or three allows me to approach 60 fps in most games. One thing you may want to consider is adding another 680 for cheap to go SLI rather than selling your 680 to get a marginal increase with a 780. Certainly, vram issues may become more of a problem with a 2gb 680 vs a 3gb 780....... but other than that I think it would be the best upgrade path.

personally i'd go with 760, save the cash for maxwell upgrade.
 
I'll likely purchase a R9 290X next then.

The Ti is too expensive to be worth what is likely a low performance boost, and the 770 ( I have 680 currently so this is out) and 780, are priced too high as well.

I had a bad experience with Nvidia with my GTX680 so i'm going to go back to Radeon for the next round while Nvidia gets it together.
 
This is why a PS4 is a good investment at the moment for me. I have 2 GTX 280s SLI'ed and they have done so much of what I have asked of them, but their days have been numbered for a while now. Good thing I have bought mostly indie titles of late that have yet to kill them outright. With the new bigger titles coming out though, a relatively cheap console that can play them beautifully right out of the box is a great deal for me. I eagerly await the day I can upgrade my SLI situation to 680 or above for a decent price.

No, a 280X/7970 is that price and is better. The GTX 770 will be close to that price too once websites start updating prices, which basically trades blows the the 280x.
 
I bought a pair of geforce GTX 780s in june for 1700 dollars (Sweden). This sucks. Where is the nvidia ambassador program?

760 is probably a bit better overall, but they're close enough that the 7950 will have an advantage in certain titles.

But either way, the 280X is $299 and beats both. A GTX 670 is also around the same price and would be preferable to either.

I'll be sticking to 1080p on my tv for the whole of next gen. I'm not interested in higher resolutions.

should have waited then? Graphics cards have price drops around this time of the year, every year.
 
So, here's my current situation... I've got a single 670 running on a 550w PSU. I don't know what the next logical step is for upgrading... do I SLI with another 670? do I sell the 670 and go for something like a 770?
