Nvidia slashes prices on GeForce GTX 780 and GTX 770 GPUs

Damn, now I'm torn between the 780, the 290x, and the 290. I've only ever had AMD, so I am a bit curious what people love so much about Nvidia that they justify paying more for equal performance

So, here's my current situation... I've got a single 670 running on a 550w PSU. I don't know what the next logical step is for upgrading... do I SLI with another 670? do I sell the 670 and go for something like a 770?
780! 770 is not much of an upgrade unless you can make most of it from the 670. I don't know how comfortable I would be with a 550W SLI unless you had the best of the best PSU.

770 is a sideways step really, don't do it.

I wouldn't advise SLI on a 550w either. What is your 670 not doing for you atm?

The 780 price drop with free games is enough for me to stay on Team Green. AMD has plenty of viable options too so you really can't go wrong but I'm more interested in gsync than mantle.

Yeah, the PSU is nothing too terribly special, to be honest I feel like it is holding my 670 back as is. I get pretty good FPS at max settings in virtually every game, but I do get some odd framerate drops that I feel like I shouldn't with my i7 3300 and 670.

should have waited then? Graphics cards have price drops around this time of the year, every year.

The price drop is very large for such a short amount of time. I know that my reaction (think that it sucks, not feel happy for other who will be able to buy the more affordable product) is egotistical and somewhat irrational, but it is hard to not feel ripped off under the circumstances.

780 for 1440p monitor.

Can it handle most games with all the bells up at 60fps?

I can live without the most expensive AA... but i'm curious about soft shadows and tesselations and physx which i've never really messed with.

You should be good, I use a 780 for 1200p and it's flawless so far.

Is your i7 a 3770K? If so overclock it, and OC your 670. Will give you a nice boost.

I'd try to hold off until 20nm really, you've still got a fantastic card.

CUDA, PhysX, adaptive V-sync, Shadowplay, G-Sync ?
(admitted, some of them are not worth the price of admission...)

AMD has upped their drivers, but they sucked at one point. Just because you can show a high FPS count, it doesn't necessarily mean you deliver a fluid gaming experience. Also, there was a long period where DX9 games on AMD cards were artifacting due to bad drivers.

So make your decision whether you want to pay a bit more.

Well I know the 7950 is good enough still, but damn those lowered prices for 780 are tempting. Will wait for the next-gen games to come first and see how my comp performs before thinking about an upgrade though.

I'll probably wait for a card that can max almost every game with AA on 1080p.

Yeah, I really should. This was my first ever gaming rig, I built it last summer so I'm still pretty new to the scene. OCing seems intimidating to me :p

Ah ok cool. Guess I didn't hunt in Newegg long enough before finding that 7950 lol.

So as it stands, the 280x is THE card to get in the 299$ range?

If you don't care about the features that come with buying an Nvidia card, then yes.

Speaking of the 280X, I wonder how much of this is true.

Overclocking is basically as easy as adjusting a few sliders or upping a multiplier in your BIOS. Nowadays you can't really do much wrong if you take small steps and don't overdo it. It starts to become scary when you start overvolting.

It my eyes it is at this moment in time.

770 at $329 will be a good option too, both are fairly closely matched. Free games are coming to both at some stage, can't remember what date Nvidia said for their bundle. If it gets there before AMD gets theirs I'd be more inclined to recommend the 770.

You have to be careful because it's actually quite easy. Graphics cards can be easily oc'd using software like MSI afterburner, CPUs should be done in the BIOS, hell for me there's just a toggle in the BIOS..

Just always work incrementally and monitor temps.

This is why a PS4 is a good investment at the moment for me. I have 2 GTX 280s SLI'ed and they have done so much of what I have asked of them, but their days have been numbered for a while now. Good thing I have bought mostly indie titles of late that have yet to kill them outright. With the new bigger titles coming out though, a relatively cheap console that can play them beautifully right out of the box is a great deal for me. I eagerly await the day I can upgrade my SLI situation to 680 or above for a decent price.
you realise you can buy the gpu in ps4 for 130 euros now, right?
or a gtx 760 (10 percent slower than gtx 680) is only 230 euros atm (and a lot faster than a hd7850)

That seems pretty hot. 7950 @ 300$? I'm comparing with 760's and such that are also 300$. Even some 660ti's in there at 300$. But performance from the 7950 seems to be on average 10-12fps higher on the 7950 then the 760.

Like Tomb Raider on Ultimate @ 1080p = 70fps for 7950, 59fps for 760.
don't buy a 7950 for 300, shouldn't the 280x (7970 ghz edition with a new sticker) be 300 dollars or less as well?

downsampling for excellent image quality
AA options on AMD are dire right now.

It's easy as pie :) With a 3770K you'll be able to get it to at least 4.2GHz usually, as for the 670 you could probably eek another 10% from the core and 15-20% from the memory.

All depends on your cooler and the silicon lottery for both, as well as the quality of your mobo for the CPU.

At $500, I think the 780 is a better deal than the 290x at the moment. It's got a better cooler, overclocks higher -- unless you get unlucky the OC headroom is enough to match the 290x.

That said I think the 290 that's coming later this week will really shake things up.

That's the best part of the competition.

AMD is seriously bringing their A level game now. Great times ahead...

The 780 for $500 with the three brand new games seems like a pretty sweet deal.

Sheeeeeeit

The 780 gets the 3 game deal too?! Damn I thought it was only on the 780ti. So bought if true. I'll just pawn off the AC, AO, and BL code to some dude on ebay or something to make the deal oh so much sweeter.

Thanks for all the responses! I'll definitely check it out ASAP. Sorry for derailing the thread :p

Going to be buying the gigabyte 770 in a few days time. Need some quick advice on the subject. I currently have a PSU thats around 550w - 600w.

Will it be enough to power a 770? My pc also contains all the typical stuff, i5 2500k, TB HDD, CD Drive, 2 sticks of ram. Nothing special.

From what I am looking at it seems the 280X beats the 770, the 7970, and everything else lower then that of course. Seems to be in line with the 770, with very slight advantages ( besides PhysX of course )

Very nice ... so that is def. my target card. Thanks guys. I will keep a look out for special deals leading up to black friday and Christmas on the 280X or 770 as they seem to be the equivalents.

It'll be fine, so long as it's not some no brand PSU.

Nvidia has the better bundle at the minute though, AMD needs a thorough refresh of Never Settle.

I'd say their never settle bundle right now (if it is still available) is kind of fine, since there has not came out too much since that time anyway. But I don't think they even include the bundle with the R9 series, and I wonder if they will and what it will include.

It'll be fine, PSU requirements on cards are artificially high anyways due to shitty PSU manufacturers lying about their PSU's wattage. If you're using Corsar, Seasonic, or another known brand, it's more than enough.

I've been there and seen the heavily downsampled pics (they look amazing). My issue though is I already have a 1440p monitor, so I would have to downsample from an even higher res, and I'm not 100% sure if a 780 could handle much more. The AMD newest AMD cards seem to perform better at high resolutions, but I had an awful experience dealing with the jury-rigged downsampling method for AMD, so I doubt I would even try it again unless I did have an Nvidia card.

G-sync is another attractive feature from the green team, but I have had this monitor for about a year and a half, and don't feel I need to change any time soon, especially considering I would have to wait for the 1440p G-sync compatible monitors.

I am also skeptical of switching because all of the consoles use AMD tech, so the multiplatform performance may be better on AMD's side since the ports are already optimized for their hardware. Then we have stuff like Mantle, which may or may not be a big deal.

Decisions, decisions...

There is a guy on here who works for CCL in the UK, they were told to expect BF4 to be added to it by now so who knows what they're at.

As for the games in NS they're almost all titles that can be picked up extremely cheaply now, it's not that attractive any more

I bought a 770 over the summer.

I'm assuming I'm not getting jack shit as far as free bundled games go...

Nope.

Nope.

Yeah that is true, but again, there haven't really come out new great PC games that run good on AMD cards. Either they have to give more cards or wait for new titles. I am hoping for BF4 but the thing is that they have a bundle with BF4 for the R9 290X and one without BF4.
