PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Did anyone actually use this feature on their PS3 / 360? I sure didn't. I've got way too many other music players to worry about putting music on my console.

It was nice to use my own MP3s to play beats to Warhawk, sure. It's a lousy thing to take away to push some lousy Music Unlimited service. (PS, it's not going to work. You're not Apple, your own media ecosystem isn't worth it and removing other options isn't going to make Music Unlimited more interesting.)

Forgive me for my ignorance about DLNA, but why is it so good? Doesn't streaming result in horrendous picture quality? Isn't it simply a far better option to have a dedicated media player hooked up to the TV and play files directly?

It's good because there is no quality lost. It plays videos straight from the source and doesn't compress.

Hahahaha so much for "Sony won't force paywalls"

Next gen is here.

Meanwhile I have 5 browser tabs, music and plenty of other programs running and I'm able to play games at the same time. I use a futuristic thing called PC.

Awesome. M$ony want to position these things as ultimate media devices. They propose to do that by removing media support. Does the Wii-U support DLNA?

As shitty as this is to even compare it to MS restricting ownership of your physical copies by dictating where you can trade in, not allowing you to privately sell your physical property and most importantly forcing you to log in to their servers for daily permission to play the games you bought for is laughable.

Let's not start the false equivalency here.

Yeah you're right, Sony is actually going through with their awful plan. My bad. And by the sound of it, MS is going to match them note for note on the idiotic anti-consumer paywalls. If you're suggesting I should treat the two differently...lol. No.

It was mostly impractical on PS3. It was on a game by game basis, and the games I played that supported it pretty much half assed the interface.

PS4 is dedicating 3 GB to OS functions. It could support custom audio handily and I would definitely use it... but they pay wall'd it now!?

This (and things like it) are the whole reason to control the living room. If you buy a proprietary TV box, get used to buying everything on its ecosystem (including things you already own).

So I won't be able to dump music on my USB drive onto the PS4 and listen to it, even out of a game?

PS3 did this. The hell?
PS3 also supported bluetooth headsets.

Pretty dumb, especially after both PS3 and Vita support it. I can't believe that Vita OS seemed more complete at launch than OS in their flagship product.

I don't mind giving devs the ability to restrict streaming but requiring music unlimited is super shitty. Both of these boxes should be supporting spotify and RDO ON TOP of the ability to stream from your existing media library.

The no-DLNA bit is not that surprising at launch, but would be shocking if DLNA support is not added by the next major update. My PS3 is used 95% of the time for DLNA streaming, and 5% for gaming. I don't like having multiple source components cluttering up my living room, so my pre-ordered PS4 is realistically going to stay in the box until DLNA support arrives.

Wait you have to give up screen space to use music playback?. WTF is going on today.

You read it wrong. You CAN do that if you really want to (may be useful if you don't want to stop the visualization and change tracks/go through the playlist), but you can also run the music in the background without the music taking up screen space.

This does seem slightly stupid, I would hope if they are going down this route they will allow other services (such as Spotify) to have apps, otherwise it does seem pretty anti-consumer.

I currently have a MU subscription because last year they were selling a year pass for £11, it is pretty decent on PS3 but the Android app is a bit crap and the website is horrible (compared to Google Music or Spotify).

I've never wanted to use background music on my consoles before, and I wont in the future.
This is not affecting me, but I'm sure they will patch it in down the line. They have enough work on making console playable at launch. :)

Seriously. For all the talk of "PC can't be taken seriously" at least we don't look like fucking clowns in shackles dancing to some company's tune. Let me use the damn hardware.

I think the problem here is what people are expecting. If their PS3 can do it and their PS4 can't... people are going to be really miffed.

Its a new gen and new machine, i think i used media extender more than in game soundtracks and ms took that away. Its shitty but never just expect features from either as nothing is for certain it seems.

Well i won't do it and i will just buy a new PC .

Well here's hoping they don't go ahead and stop us from playing our own video files on PS4 as well. (Or have they done this already and I've just not heard about it?) That's one feature I'd be very pissed about losing.

Wait what? How is MS not putting every single app and game recording behind a paywall not going through their own "awful plan". This is not even comparable to their drm which got national media attention such as yahoo, huffington post, etc. Again, if you want to continue with the false equivalency ( and ignore MS doing putting even more features behind a paywall) go ahead.

No MP3's... what a fucking joke! Why are you doing this Sony?!

That explains why Yoshida didn't answer this question on Twitter.

Absolutely terrible news!

This is actually a pretty big deal for me. I'm one of those funny people that uses his PS3 as a media centre -- more than I use it for games, in fact. I use it to watch movies and listen to music (we don't own a stereo). Right out of the box, the PS4 can't do either of those, and even post-patch it's asking me to subscribe to the worst streaming music service there is to do so -- and then even then it doesn't have half the music I like to listen to. Seriously, Xbox Music is a better service, especially with it's cloud syncing.

I get that this is a gaming forum, so to many 1080p over 720p and all that stuff is going to matter more. But if I get round to picking one of the twins in a year or two (especially if the Wii U dries up completely) then the Xbox One currently looks like the stronger unit for me.

The set-top box concept might be laughable for some here, but for others it's actually a pretty big deal.

Thank god that sounded fucking unreal haha.

This is incredibly shitty. Yet more fuel to my growing desire to just say fuck it and stick to the PC.

I wonder if you will be able to play movie files outside of disc and PSN content. I currently use PlayOn to stream media to my PS3. Is that type of feature a no go now as well? When will these companies learn? Restricting access won't win us as customers, it will simply alienate us.
