PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

This doesn't affect me as my PS4 will be on my desk and I use my PC for media, but I can see why people would be mad.

Does anybody knows if the PS4 will be able to reproduce MKV? At least give me that Sony.

The PS3 couldn't do that the PS4 is a step back in terms of media support so take a guess. My question is if MP4 playback got the axe as well. That will be a super bummer. My PS3 is a treasure trove of gangster movies I love to watch over and over when I'm bored and don't want to play games or feel like Netflix hunting.

I am confused, when Xbone came out and said they were doing everything exceptcuring cancer people complained. PS4 comes out and says we are doing games and everything else is a distant second people are complaining.
I do use the feature in games. All games on the 360 and in games that support custom soundtracks on the PS3.

Its such a very basic thing to remove and block with an additional paywall.

Man I fucking LOVE swapping out background music for my own.

I've been doing it since they added it in Project Gotham Racing back on the original Xbox. Being able to play your own music in racing games upgrades the experience in every way. Doing it through the console also meant you didn't lose access to the in-game sound effects; only the music would be different.

It was my shit for Geometry Wars, WipeOut, Forza X, DoA 4/5, CoD MP, Gears MP, and a number of others. Some of my best memories this generation were kicking people's asses in DoA to James Brown's Big Payback, or flying down a WipeOut track listening to D'Angelo's Crusin'.

If anything, I expected these kinds of features to be more prevalent and integrated across more titles. Not this bullshit.
Yep. This is moving backwards.

It's Sony showing that they're a real company with departments that have their own priorities. The development team within the Playstation division is a dream come true for us, but they have to answer to plenty of other suits in and around them. This is my guess, but from what I've seen this has to be the case. I only hope that we can get them to open things up because at the very least we should be able to bring in our own mp3's to play music in the background.
You can play mp3's on vita
This isnt a difficult thing to implement

I guess I'm keeping my ps3 plugged in then. DLNA support is critical for me. Unlimited music jukebox please.

I think I used my PS3 for streaming audio and video last gen more than I used it for gaming.

I know for a fact that I did. I used it plenty for games, too.

Honestly, this is so backwards and anti-consumer that I am tempted to just upgrade my PC instead of buying a console. Better that, than putting up with the nonsense of monolithic corporations.

So, you need an Xbox Music sub.
"...my own music..." is the keypart of the question here.
I have to admit, I only listened to music on my PS3 a grand total of about two times but Sony should change this.

No loss to me at all though.

I play music on my phone and bluetooth it to speakers. Much easier.
So what speakers do you use for your console? You've got two speaker sets? Or play one through lousy TV speakers and the other through your home cinema?

Kinda sucks, but I haven't put music on my xbox since around a year after launch. I wouldn't have been putting music on my ps4 anyways.

Could this have something to do with Sony trying to avoid the veritable nightmare of copyright issues and claims when streaming to youtube and twitch which both have monetization methods in place. Twitch and youtube already jump down peoples assholes as soon as they hear copyrighted music that you don't obtain rights to use. Maybe forcing a MU sub is to work around legal issues for the next decade...

More likely they just want to give you no choice but to buy MU for background soundtracks. MU doesn't have shit I listen to, at least not on spotifys level. Sadness.

Wait, wait, wait. So there is no personal audio playback (CD's, MP3, DLNA Streaming, Etc...) at all, period? Or just not for this custom soundtrack feature? If the former, this is on the level of pre-180 Xbone on the brain dead dumb fuck scale.

That's incredibly shortsighted of Sony. Surprisingly so. I listen to my iTunes library through streaming from a NAS Drive with PS3 Media Server. No DLNA in this day and age is absurdly stupid. Damn...

Such a senseless, transparent cash grab. How many people are seriously going to pony up for this, and is the negative reaction worth it?

At least throw in an MU subscription with PS+. This is worse than Xbox Live. Now you have TWO fucking Sony paywalls. This is idiotic.

Awful. Ever since the original Xbox, custom soundtracks have been one of my new favorite things ever on consoles. =\

Just read that FAQ...

(I apologise before hand about my language in this post)

Man oh man, who the fuck makes these decisions???

I don't even use this bloody feature but it just bothers me that we cant even use ps3 features!

Sony have been riding a wave since the start of the year and now all the shit is being revealed. It really sucks. They don't even elaborate that its coming after launch.

NOW THAT SHITS FUCKED UP!

I pre-ordered this thing in June, I'm so close to cancelling it. Luckily it doesn't come out until the 29th here so I can watch some reviews.

IMO this is Sony's first major fuck up along with other things in that FAQ. Sort it out Sony.

Wait, this makes no sense other than to force their service on us. What $400 media device cant play MP3s in 2013? Has it been confirmed you cant stream your library in either?

There's no media playback of any kind. You can play DVDs, Blu-Rays or PS4 games. And you can stream Music Unlimited in the background as you play PS4 games. That's it.

Can't find the quote?

Sorry, I ignored you after you infantile rant about Albert supposedly deceiving you. And I didn't say he said it will play MP3s. He said it will play your own music without have to subscribe to a service. It was shown off at Gamescom.

This.

I actually love the Music Unlimited service. I've listen to a lot of music that I would not have purchased or found otherwise.

I think this primarily means that they have not developed a stable media player for the system yet. As launch priorities go I can understand putting this on the back burner for a while.

I said Ghad Dayum. WOW. Un-be-fucking-lievable. There is no doubt in my mind they had a full blown 1:1 Xbone DRM plan at one point if this is the shit they're pulling to make a few dollars on some crappy music service.

This is fucking bullshit.
You cant jump a gen and have features that became basic taken away, and others replaced by a mandatory paid service.

Sony. Wtf?!

Unfortunately I think it is the former.

There's no media playback of any kind.

Via USB connected device or DLNA streaming it seems.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I suspect a lot of people on GAF who stream media specifically primarily use a game console for it, and had an expectation that the media capabilities of the next consoles would at least match what the current gen consoles had at their launch.
