The fact you can't play PS3 games on it should've been the biggest, most obvious reason you can't replace a PS3 with a PS4.

... And admittedly yeah,t here is patching in the other stuff, even MP3 playing. Hopefully they do that eventually.

I have about a terabyte of DVD rips (I own all of the physical discs, thankyouverymuch) and 60+ gigs of MP3s that I legally own, and being able to play them has been one of the primary uses of my PS3.

I was hoping that the PS4 would do what the PS3 did, but with a better interface, so that I could just fire up the PS3 if I felt like playing an old game.

Right now, it seems that I'll be better off just keeping the PS3 as my TV-connected device, and I'll look into getting a PS4 if there's a game that just seizes my attention.

In the meantime, I'll just keep using the PS3 for Netflix and Hulu and for playing all of the kids' movies I bought for my daughter.

Maybe next year, Sony.

I know. It comes from a german tech site "computerbild.de" who had a PS4 devkit for sometime. They stated that you could use 12.5mm drives. So everyone expected that to be true, as they had/have an actual PS4.

I still don't get it though. Anyone with a basic understanding of consumer psychology realizes that getting locked of one's own stuff will just cause resentment... not reluctant signups to some pay service. The feature is not so important that it will make people give Sony MORE money. It will just cause bad PR... that's it.

Now, online multiplayer, sure. That's essential enough to where you can extort some cash for it... at least you get something* for the bad PR.

I use a custom soundtrack for SSBB, for example. While the standard soundtrack IS awesome you just want to hear something else after 1000hrs. I also use the custom soundtrack to accommodate my custom stages

I also use a custom soundtrack in racing games and (to a degree) in most other multiplayer games.

Never in SP though. Basically I only use it when
a) I don't like the regular soundtrack
b) I'm not in SP where the soundtrack might be used as a stylistic device.

As someone who plays a lot of fighting games , RPGs and sometimes sims music is a god send .

Huh, thats interesting. I never even considered these situations honestly. But then again, I dont even have any music in my console and I just know I would be too lazy to transfer them. I would probably mute my TV and have my iPhone play some music. I am that lazy. :lol

There's a licensing fee of, from what I've understood, no more than two dollars per unit on this scale of production.

Me too but c'mon, they're can't be that stupid. Vita and most other Sony media devices support this stuff. They must surely have simply cut implementation to make sure they get OS stability for launch - there's been enough hints both PS4 and XXB1 OS have stability issues and both are launching feature incomplete and even the day 1 patches aren't fixing everything that's missing.

You buy now you're an early adopter to (outside gameplay and other core features) partially incomplete feature sets on both consoles - it's that simple.

TBH this is why I almost never buy stuff like this at launch - it's tempting but there always seem to be missing stuff and other teething issues and I'd rather be envious and duck that shit than live through it.

Of course I'll eat crow and be even more disappointed if Sony clarify this stuff is 100% never coming but that seems very unlikely.

I'm pretty sure CDs don't have a license fee any more (patents expired long ago), and that's the first thing Sony announced they were taking away.

This blows. Not sure why some are defending it. It'd be like making a car that couldn't support AC/Heat and you guys being like, "well you can still drive so who cares?" Media support has been standard on consoles for going on 20 years now (dating back to at least the Sega CD and probably any prior-CD based system). I and many others have gotten used to using it on a regular basis. I loved that I could come home, turn on the PS3/360 and any form of digital entertainment I wanted to enjoy was right there all on that one device and it was easy to swap between any medium just with the controller.

Sucks that all of that is gone now. If it wasn't for Quantic Dream and Final Fantasy being console only, I'd seriously consider finally fully plunging into just building a dedicated gaming PC that lived in my living room. The current gen consoles could compete well enough for that ultimate media experience but the next-gen seems to have wholly abandoned the idea.
