PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

The fact you can't play PS3 games on it should've been the biggest, most obvious reason you can't replace a PS3 with a PS4.

... And admittedly yeah,t here is patching in the other stuff, even MP3 playing. Hopefully they do that eventually.

I have about a terabyte of DVD rips (I own all of the physical discs, thankyouverymuch) and 60+ gigs of MP3s that I legally own, and being able to play them has been one of the primary uses of my PS3.

I was hoping that the PS4 would do what the PS3 did, but with a better interface, so that I could just fire up the PS3 if I felt like playing an old game.

Right now, it seems that I'll be better off just keeping the PS3 as my TV-connected device, and I'll look into getting a PS4 if there's a game that just seizes my attention.

In the meantime, I'll just keep using the PS3 for Netflix and Hulu and for playing all of the kids' movies I bought for my daughter.

Maybe next year, Sony.

Couldn't care less.

The number of times I've used background music in games, other than what the game provides? Zero.
The number of times I've used any PlayStation console to play music? Probably once or twice on the original PSX, just see the dumb visualizer.

MP3 Playback: Parsnip, how can you say that after all these years, huh? Parsnip?
[gets no response]
MP3 Playback: Parsnip?
[still gets no response, then laughs slightly, then Sony shoots him in the head]
Sony: [he puts the walkie talkie up to the screaming crowd, then yells into the walkie talkie]
Sony: You hear that? Talk to me, where is my additional revenue? Where is it, or shall I remove another feature? Sooner or later, I might get to something you *do* care about!

Lame. No impact to me, but it's just such a cheap little thing to do solely to try to make people use a presumably terrible online service.

wtf, at this rate it looks like I'm going to have to keep my PS3 around for media center duties...
Seeing how we have to keep the PS3 around for all of these other reasons we may as well just hold off on buying a PS4 until we've got our backlogs caught up, right?

And these backlogs... my, look how big they are! So robust with free PS Plus games. I'm going to be busy for quite a while then.

How did DF miss this when deciding which was the best multimedia player? And why in the world would Sony think this was a good idea?

Welp, this is bullshit.
Music Unlimited is not avaible on my region.
And if i was previously interested, with this i'm not anymore.

Getting PS4 day one , but please sony fix this shit, you can play mp3 almos on anything except a ps4...doesn't make any kind of sense.

We've known it couldn't play cd Roms for some time. MP3 support is odd. Isn't the cost tiny? Probably to force you into buying music again.

Right.

I still don't get it though. Anyone with a basic understanding of consumer psychology realizes that getting locked of one's own stuff will just cause resentment... not reluctant signups to some pay service. The feature is not so important that it will make people give Sony MORE money. It will just cause bad PR... that's it.

Now, online multiplayer, sure. That's essential enough to where you can extort some cash for it... at least you get something* for the bad PR.

*something = hundreds of millions of dollars per year

I never use custom soundtrack or DNLA anymore, but this is a pretty shitty move. Sounds like something mandated by higher ups.

"Wow this PS4 looks like its going to get really popular. Lets try and use it to save our failing services."

I never played mp3s on the D3 directly, but I use DLNA on a daily basis, and it missing puts a serious dent in my wanting to get a ps4.

I use a custom soundtrack for SSBB, for example. While the standard soundtrack IS awesome you just want to hear something else after 1000hrs. I also use the custom soundtrack to accommodate my custom stages :D

I also use a custom soundtrack in racing games and (to a degree) in most other multiplayer games.

Never in SP though. Basically I only use it when
a) I don't like the regular soundtrack
b) I'm not in SP where the soundtrack might be used as a stylistic device.

As someone who plays a lot of fighting games , RPGs and sometimes sims music is a god send .

Huh, thats interesting. I never even considered these situations honestly. But then again, I dont even have any music in my console and I just know I would be too lazy to transfer them. I would probably mute my TV and have my iPhone play some music. I am that lazy. :lol

If you're not going to support MP3 playback, you better damn well support native 1080p/60fps gaming.

900p is testing my patience, Sony.

Now I wonder what other BS they're going to tell us about...?

What a freaking BUZZKILL this "Next-Gen" has been - between the XB1 and the PS4 it's amazing they both haven't delayed their launches until 2015 and gone back to the drawing board from freaking SCRATCH.

Are these ommisions just to save money? I sort of take the ability to import my cd and mp3 collection for granted.

This, the lack of DLNA, and lack of support for generic BT headsets, is BS. Why can't the PS4 do what the PS3 could? Oh, Sony wants to make money? Ok.

I don't really use it either but the trend of pulling features out of new machines that existed before sucks. With each passing day I hug my PC a little tighter.

Could any of the journalists reading this thread please ask Sony if there are plans to add MP3 support through a patch down the line.

If the Xbone has these features, Sony will get absolutely grilled for this. What a stupid thing to take away when the PS3 and 360 had it. It would be like taking away the ability to swap harddrives.

Me too but c'mon, they're can't be that stupid. Vita and most other Sony media devices support this stuff. They must surely have simply cut implementation to make sure they get OS stability for launch - there's been enough hints both PS4 and XXB1 OS have stability issues and both are launching feature incomplete and even the day 1 patches aren't fixing everything that's missing.

You buy now you're an early adopter to (outside gameplay and other core features) partially incomplete feature sets on both consoles - it's that simple.

TBH this is why I almost never buy stuff like this at launch - it's tempting but there always seem to be missing stuff and other teething issues and I'd rather be envious and duck that shit than live through it.

Of course I'll eat crow and be even more disappointed if Sony clarify this stuff is 100% never coming but that seems very unlikely.

Linton can fuck right off. SME Should be bought to the table and TOLD what to do, they should have no feedback, they are the reason Sony had DRM on their music in 1999 and sold their music player business down the river as a result.

Microsoft really needs to put up a video showing how you play Mp3s on the Xbone.

If they can get their UI to hold up long enough to actually get it to work.

It would be hilariously amazing payback for E3, I'd love to see that.

hm this sucks, but the licensing fee for MP3 makes sense. i never used it anyway. if i needed to listen to other music while playing a game i'd just turn my actual music on from my computer.

perhaps they'll make it so you have to use ATRAC or something stupid like that to play "your" music.

I was expecting the ps4 to finally catch up and allow music in game but it seems they took one step forward and then proceeded to just run in the opposite direction

Wait, we can no longer stream MP3's from our computers to our home stereo? I don't give a damn about background music, but no streaming or playing local mp3's is bullshit.

I would be 80% fine with this if they went with OGG or something semi-nonstandard but free for me. The 20% is the annoyance of converting stuff I already have.

Don't look at me, I already gave up on Sony after OtherOS and taking away my ability to buy a new backward compatible PS3.

I'm pretty sure CDs don't have a license fee any more (patents expired long ago), and that's the first thing Sony announced they were taking away.

I remember when this was a big deal when 360 first came out and then nobody used it. I know I personally never bothered after trying it once or twice.

But on the other hand taking away choice is never a good thing.

This blows. Not sure why some are defending it. It'd be like making a car that couldn't support AC/Heat and you guys being like, "well you can still drive so who cares?" Media support has been standard on consoles for going on 20 years now (dating back to at least the Sega CD and probably any prior-CD based system). I and many others have gotten used to using it on a regular basis. I loved that I could come home, turn on the PS3/360 and any form of digital entertainment I wanted to enjoy was right there all on that one device and it was easy to swap between any medium just with the controller.

Sucks that all of that is gone now. If it wasn't for Quantic Dream and Final Fantasy being console only, I'd seriously consider finally fully plunging into just building a dedicated gaming PC that lived in my living room. The current gen consoles could compete well enough for that ultimate media experience but the next-gen seems to have wholly abandoned the idea.
