PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Every previous generation console (PS3/Xbox 360/Wii) supported MP3 i think. MP3 support was removed from the Wii later on though (it didnt affect current sold Wii consoles).

I know, but including the pretty archaic Wii (in terms of media capability) just increases the weight of the statement. Finally the bad repuatation can be put to good use!

I've never used this feature on ps or xb, but trying to force people that do into a subscription is BS. While this is nowhere near as bad as the drm crap, it does strike a blow against the image that sony has been cultivating recently. At the end of the day, both companies want to squeeze you for as much money as possible. If the x1 wasn't $100 more/weaker, I would seriously be reconsidering my choice.

Hier ga je spijt van krijgen, ik weet het zeker. Zonde man!

But yeah, no MP3's sucks. Damn it Sony.

While I can understand why some people would be upset by this, it's yet another feature removal that doesn't bug me because I never used it on the PS3. When I want to listen to music while I play games, I just use my PC.

I may think about one logical reasoning behind this...

PS4 can record clips from games. Custom mp3 aren't under Sony Music partner licences and thus could create some law fights with original music owners.

Could be.

This needs to stop. We shouldn't cloud the situation by arguing against features just because you don't use them. I assure you MILLIONS do in fact use them. I stream using PMS daily and I LOVE playing SSX with my music that reacts in-game to what I'm doing. I also greatly miss Rhythm games that allow uses of your own music. I'd kill for an AudioSurf on PS4. We need to think outside ourselves for a minute. These aren't expensive features to implement and we can all benefit from them. It's a no-brainer!

I really do not think there is any doubt that this stuff will be patched in at a later date. Yes, it is absurd that we cannot steam/play mp3s at launch, but it will get sorted out. DLNA was not a launch feature of the PS3 either. People canceling their pre-orders over this is rather comical. You are buying a new console day one, and your "I'm gonna cancel" reasoning is no mp3 or DLNA support?

An excellent point. If that's the case, fine I can deal. Still sucks though.

Yeah this sucks. MP3 playback should be supported. Such a basic thing to have IMO.

Though its not a feature I use a whole lot. Background music I never use. But the fact that the feature is missing pisses me off and makes Sony look cheap.

I'm probably going to sub to the Music Unlimited service, but I would have hoped for a Spotify app as I'm already a subscriber there :(

This sounds like an epic misfire by Sony, sorta how Microsoft did a while back then reversed all of those stupid decisions after the backlash.

Of these new bits, which is Microsoft going down the same road on? Is that known? If they are on the same page then that may just be it.

When it's integrated with the game it's incredible. Custom soundtracks aren't all playing Nickelback over a JRPG with in-game music turned all the way down.

Yep. I played mostly on the 360 last gen, so that's what I'm used to. Having the music cut out but the sound effects stay on while my own custom soundtrack plays was one of the joys of this gen for me.

This is a good point. However, if this is truly the reason they could prevent recording when custom music is being played.

I have yet to use my PS3 or any console as a standalone music player, but I can see why people are getting riled up. I got the discounted Music Unlimited deal $12 for a year, but I don't even use that. The number artists and tracks seem limited...

I can't imagine Music Unlimited music would be heard over live streaming (and therefore recordings). Viewers without Music Unlimited would get it for free. No idea how the console separates this or how simple that is.

So, I'm guessing Sony's Music Unlimited service won't have stuff like music from Ace Attorney, Castlevania, Deadly Premonition and the NES Ninja Gaidens...

Cause that's what I like to listen to with custom soundtracks. :(

One of the reasons I prefer GTA V on 360 is custom soundtracks. Listening to Pilotwings music while flying across Los Santos is just PERFECT.

MP3 was almost certainly purposeful everything and I mean everything and it's mother can run MP3's. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if there was toasters and baths that could run the damn thing.

I have that sub. Honestly even after getting it at that price I could barely recommend it. The browser service crashes or has log in problems. The Android app crashes or has log in problems, and then refuses to work. The sound quality is strange, even with the added HQ option from this year, something about it just doesn't sound right. Regardless of quality though, this shouldn't be forced.

Never had any issue with the app on my HTC. It was honestly a godsend, because my phone is my MP3 player, I walk everywhere, with tunes, so it worked out great.

The Ps3 app was useless though, mainly because you can't do anything else at the same time, which is not the case on PS4. For £12, I think it's worth it.

Defo not at the normal price though.

Wow. PS4 truly is just a video game machine and Blu-ray player now. No audio CDs, no DLNA, no MP3, no cool visualizer like the PS3?

At least this gives me a little bit of reason to keep my Xbone pre-order now. It will be the multimedia/streaming box while the PS4 can be the games machine.

Custom soundtracks are stored in memory separately, and could simply not be added to the video recording mix.

Just to clarify, when they say it does not support MP3, does that mean any type of audio file? Does that includes stuff like FLAC, AAC, etc?

Still lazy, they could easily have it disable in-game custom music when sharing starts or records. Hell it could always be set not to record the music audio by isolating it on a different channel altogether.
This is the first decent theory yet though.

While I think 99% of consumers wont even notice this news, I personally use my PS3 as a media hub for parties and the like.

I have over 40 gigs of music on my PS3 and use it to screen tests of my own video editing to friends and colleagues when they visit, so hopefully some form of streaming or native playback happens. This basically cements that I'll be waiting until inFamous for my PS4.

I've asked this before but never got an answer. Does anyone know how many devices simultaneously can access unlimited music. If it can do 2 or 3 devices at a time I may sub.

If anything, this is the kind of stuff that justifies a cancelled preorder. Last-minute announcements of features that I can use on my current-gen Sony system not being available day one. Most of which have no hints of being implemented in the future on this FAQ.

If Sony doesn't change this or has plans of changing this, I will probably cancel my PS4 preorder because of this. The main reason I played racing games on 360 over PS3 was because of the ability to play my own music (mainly dj sets) while playing. I would rather have inferior hardware that gives me the ability to play my own music than be stuck with the music developers choose to put into their games (most of which I do not like).
I was just playing Gran Turismo 5 last night, doing time trials to custom music to wind down. So awesome. It makes a tremendous difference to my time with that game.

Removing that capability to try and push me into a subscription music service has sapped the wind from my sails.

I couldn't imagine playing Forza Horizon without it, among plenty of other games.
