PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Sony has been on top of everything this coming gen, but lately they are slipping up on some minor stuff that is annoying me.

This is utter bullshit, this is what I hate with todays fucking media and makes me want a hack that lets me do what ever I want with my game. Cant wait till someone hack both consoles so we can do whatever we want with it.

This wasn't a secret though and all they are doing is covering themsevles. Vita prevents screenshots in some locations and, in order to prevent spoilers, it makes sense to give this option to developers.

Will they use it? No necessarily, but Sony have covered themselves should one ot one hundred developers use it.

Sony makes a video titled "how to lend games on ps4" obvious stab at microsoft over DRM.

If I was msft I would make a video titled "how to listen to music on xbone" and show them inserting a damn cd in the fucking console.

People were pissed netflix is behind a paywall on xbone... well netflix isn't on ps4, but LISTENING TO MUSIC is.

So you are comparing the DRM fiasco, always online, etc to this? Yah, ok...guess I'll just listen to music from one of the other 20 devices in my living room.

I don't even...

Listen, I was really hoping that this was all a big misunderstanding and the PS4 was only missing this functionality *for launch* and was always in the cards. Yosp's tweet just confirms that was never the plan and there was no misunderstanding.

That's actually horrible news.

Oh, that's fair enough. Yes, it's stupid and it should've been on the cards from the beginning. In fact, it should be there, at launch.

But the fact they they acknowledged it is a good thing.

And by saying he'll "Share it with the dev team for future considerations" he's sort of confirming that it wasn't already going to be patched in until people freaked the fuck out.

I think's it's both DLNA was probably going to be patched in Kagari implied so, MP3 they had no intention of patching so he's sharing it with the dev team.

Obviously he can't say this hence his response.

Yoshida >>>>>>> EVERY gaming executive on the internet

Hopefully Shu makes it happen.

This policy is the same shit as Sony Music forcing Ken Kutaragi at electronics to use DRM'd ATRAC and not have any MP3 playback for portable music players. Sony Network Entertainment are clearly behind this asinine policy to not have MP3 playback, Kaz needs to step up and close down this kind of hobbling of products.

Pretty sure they explained this was the case ages ago, to prevent people posting spoilers and such online without thinking. I can see both sides of the argument tho.

My PS3 is used so much for media features that PS4 is a step back. When the family is round, it's perfect for viewing photos. For listening to music, it's fantastic (going via my Yamaha A3010 AVR), for video content it's superb (via DLNA).

This. ...put music on, and show your friends photos from your trip to wherever with face-zoom or the polaroid-rain-with-dates. Loved that.
Also: The earth-from-space music visualization was("is") freakin awesome. I bet XB1 HAS some cool music features.

sony founded DLNA but the ps4 isnt supporting it

good that yoshida is looking into it but why didnt they think about this before ?

Holyshittttttttt over DLNA and MP3!??!? Yes this is bullshit and should be fixed. But god damn folks. lol

DLNA i couldn't care less for but no mp3? That's a joke.
The only thing that's confusing is how basic this features are. Shit my $50 roku box can do all of that. Plus ya know, PS3 had all of that day 1. I get why they're doing it. All about business but wow. They already put up sick deals for Music Unlimited on PS+. Was this really necessary? I think Sony really took advantage over their hype.

Shit better be patched by the time The Show comes out.

Nope made perfect examples of what fans were on microsoft about, and these same people are brushing this shit off. Music behind a paywall, headsets behind a licensed paywell, etc.

This is the confusing part to me. The exclusion of MP3 and DNLA, isn't going to force the average someone into a paid service because they were never using them anyway. This really only serves to piss off they more techy fans of the console, and as you can see, no of us are frothing at the mouth to go by MU now,

They want the hardcore user to sign up for music unlimited and video services as well. I mean I guess they could have just straight up forgotten about MP3 playback but that's unlikely, unless maybe MS forgot about it too (they have a music service too right?).

DNLA is pretty unfortunate since it was a nice way to use the console as a media center. Hopefully the "outrage" will convince Sony otherwise, I have serious doubts how much more money they would make by not supporting DLNA since it seems most people have netflix or whatever anyway.

Can anyone tell me what DLNA is?

It allows you to stream media like movies from your PC to the receiving box (like a PS3 or 360) if they're on the same network.

PS3 did not have DLNA support day one, it came six months post launch.

Because they were trying to screw you over (to put it bluntly). They wanted you to use their service and were holding the functionality as ransom.

Future consideration?

Well, he gets credit for responding.

But who the hell designs a console with features removed from the prior generation? What happened to the battle for the living room?

I guess the living room battle is the battle to get us to pay again to access media we already own (Music Unlimited, Gakai, etc).

You don't think they did? If you can't stream your movies, then you look into other options, they are hoping you use their option. Same goes for music.. if you can't use your own service, why not switch to theirs? It's a bullshit money grab, people denying this are naive.

To be honest "future consideration" means nothing to me. I think that Yoshida still is underestimating how big a deal this is. Either make that "we'll fix it" or I'm out of here, or even worse, I'll really buy a Xbone!

They should really take complaints more seriously. The days of riding on bad MS PR are over.

Finally someone who knows the history. Shit is transparent as fuck.

I know they want people to start using their sony unlimited music service, but this is bs. If there really is no DLNAsupport or MP3 support in the future, this is useless to me. Way to drop this bomb two weeks before launch.

Seriously considering canceling my pre-order until i know that it can be used as a media player without going through the Sony Store.

coolasj19

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
How can sony fanboys pretend this isn't the same type of bs they were jumping all over ms for? I'm not an ms fan by any means, but damn this is as biased as it gets.
I think you missed a few pages. Try reading them again if you dare.
The easiest way to justify the feature is to point out that Vita supports both mp3 playback, and also MU, both of which can be done in the background.
Ummmmm... Yes?
We obviously have very different ideas on what makes for good news.
I've said it before I'll say it again. Acknowledgement is good enough for a lot of people. Whether that's good or bad? Dunno. Can't change it so easily though.
Here's why...
Does your console have this feature?
Sony: No
Microsoft: I can assure you that you'll be blown away playing our exclusive games!
Yoshida-sans straight answers have certainly garnered lots of appreciations. And a level of respect.
By saying "at the launch" he is sort of confirming that it was likely going to be patched in.
Not necessarily but it's the closest we're gonna get.

Oh no!

Headsets are behind a licensed paywall now? Odd I could of sworn they stated it will be patched in later.

Music behind a paywall will not happen either.

I'm not brushing this off, I'm simply saying it is ridiculous to foam at the mouth over this. It will get patched in at a later date. Should mp3, DLNA, headsets be working at launch? Yes they should. Are any of the three equal to always online, kinect required, DRM fiasco? No, not even close.

They'll do something about it if we start cancelling pre-orders.
As much as this is abit... Well shite. It hardly warrants "obligatory pre-order cancelled"

Now the yoshida has shown his superb skill and empathy once again they are at least listening.

But you have to remember they also own music and film companies and illegal music downloads are still a big issue, maybe the delivery should have Ben better but of me it makes 0 difference, I cannot remember the last i played a game whilst listing to my music.. I think pgr 3 on the 360 was it... Not as big a deal as the 30+ pages we have but I am sure a compromise will be found.....

This is seriously bullshit. My PS4 can't even play music with going through some separte paid service? This is a basic service. My PS3 is my media center for the living room and now it can't even play music. Ridiculous. I would gladly take away useless stuff like internet explorer browser and the endless apps. To think we have video recording and editing softwares but not MP3 support.

It may be a stupid question, but now I cant just put some .mp4 files on a USB-Stick and copy it on my PS4, am I right?

So what you guys are saying I can't have video's on my PS4 as well. There goes my 700+ music files and 100+ video files.

And do you know for certain the XB1 will have DLNA support?
