No DLNA/MP3 support is inexcusable. Especially for a device that is going to replace current consoles, which do support it, in many living rooms.

Hmm. There were many times where I hooked up my CPU via hdmi in situations like that. I guess I need saw doing it via the PS3 or 360 as an especialy easy option. It was one wire after all. Maybe all this time I've been being incredibly inefficient!
I tried the playto option from W8 on the 360 a few times but it seemed really unstable.
well, I guess my PS3 will continue to be the be all DLNA player.
Is there a really good alternate to the PS3 as a DLNA player? I'm guessing a Roku can do DLNA correct?

For stating my opinion, which is clear what it is? They left music (and media in general, and your own collection of movies) behind a paywall, simple as that. I really loved sonys strategy and honesty through all of this, it seemed like they go what the consumer wanted, but it's pretty clear they had other intentions.

I'm surprised too, but then again, I have my computer and consoles all hooked up to the same TV and surround sound system. I suppose it is a lot more convenient for most people to use their console.
The revelation that so many people still have dedicated monitors for their PC really astounds me. I can't imagine playing my Steam games on a tiny monitor with low-quality computer speakers.

But mp3 isn't behind a paywall. PS4 doesn't support mp3 files. The MU service justs lets you stream music.

It's not about it being the main, but it's an all in one for an entertainment room, or even a smaller room. My ps3 moves from my game room to my bedroom. I'm not going to move my computer all around my house, when I bring my ps3 I bring- my movies, my music, my games, my friends list, etc. Now with ps4 all I'm bringing is the games and friends list. It's a definite downgrade.
Don't get me wrong guys I'm still getting a ps4, but it's not replacing my ps3 at all, which is a shame, it's an incomplete system./
I'm going to edit it, because it's not just mp3, it's music in general. This INCLUDES custom soundtracks. Congrats, a free feature for years now behind the paywall.

I'm talking in the general sense. This is the second inexcusable garbage Sony has pulled with the next generation. And it's been so long since the 'paying for online' nonsense that was glossed over thanks to the massive xbone failure that this is the first time the reputation managers that the Sony side has hired have had to stick out their necks from the general public.

The Xbox has barely been mentioned in this thread. I've seen it mentioned in hopes it will support this stuff but no one knows for sure.
People are pissed. The PS3 is a great games console AND media player. Naturally we assumed the PS4 would be of equal standing or better.
The thing needs an update just to play Blu-rays.

Xbox One can't play CDs, knew that. Can it play MP3s and does it have DLNA? Last I heard, the DLNA software that exists on the 360 isn't on the One.

Yup. Absolutely. They definitely feel as if they have the momentum to make those kind of calls though. Time will tell how bad (or if?) it comes back to bite them.
I'm also interested in what kind of support the PS4 may have for other audio formats at launch or in the future. The PS3 supported a couple other formats besides MP3 and the only thing we see called out on Sony's FAQ is MP3-- arguably because that's the current standard and most widely used. It'd be nice to see FLAC playback or something that allows good quality without being tangled up in licensing fees.
Ok, please name one so I can at least be sure you're basing your rant on some actual evidence of astroturfing and not just a tinfoil hat conspiracy theory.

There is no excuse for this ,it's ridiculous.
I rarely use my media server on my ps3 but I'm pretty disappointed to see it excluded from the PS4. Not being able to band-aid the issue with an external hard drive which makes this inexcusable at launch.

And? It's not like this is just something they forgot to code.
Moving the functionality to music unlimited requires time and effort, and is a calculated desicion. It's not the dev team that will have any say in it.
But it's not inconceivable that enough of a backlash (or impacted preorders) could cause the suits a rethink. Trying to force adoption of something new by removing something people are used to rarely works. Ask Microsoft.

Are we sure this is really the case? Isn't it just like PS3 where you can't use an external drive as main storage (game data/saves/etc) but can still use it for something else
Already confirmed to support external drives, only not at launch.

I can only go on what I've seen of the BF4 comparison. Higher resolution and better frame rate but they look practically the same in screens and videos.
I just found out you can't change your ID on PS4 either, something the bloody XBox 360 from 2005 allowed and something people have been asking about for months and months.
