Can SONY at least give me Spotify and rdio apps compatible with this feature? that would be something at least

Vita will be able to with TuneIn radio app. You can game and background listen to music. But not on PS4 due to unknown reasons. But you can with Music Unlimited only $120 a year! What a deal!

Dont mind me, im a conspiracy theorist!

Edit: For the record, if they offered the $12 a year for MU, I'd be ok with this but not giving any options is crazy. I dont particularly mind too much about this as I never do this since it sorta ruins the game experience for me unless I'd be doing some trophy hunting. But giving options is not a bad thing to offer Sony!

now that we're going to be waiting for another update, does anyone have a workaround for listening to MP3/ipod while playing?

I was thinking that my amplifier could help but I can't get two audio sources to work at once.

For those of you who miss this functionality, there are loads of useful posts from people in the Xbox GUI thread with an ideal general purpose solution of just using your phone or tablet. That same obstructive logic applies to MP3 playback too!

Urgh , why would I want to take photos on my phone when I can use my camera?

Why would I want to record videos on my camera when I can use my camcorder?

Etc

My television has Native DLNA functionality and USB support, I have wireless speakers that can pipe music around my living room, I own 2 smartphones and 3 tablets, My Surround sound has a port for a 3.5mm audio jack, My DAB+ radio has an ipod dock, My AV receiver has multiple sources, My DVR has a USB port and can play . MkV MY Blu-ray player plays MP3, I own a PS3 and a 360 and my living room PC has its own speakers.

That's just the living room.

I don't give a shit. I'm still pissed off.

here's the thing: if you're using the ps4 for games, you can't run music unlimited anyway (as far as i know). if you're not using it for games, you can turn it off and use any number of other different ways to listen to music. Pretty shocking i know.

nevermind.. not nearly invested enough to continue. I'M OUT!

Apparently you can't do that actually. The app is available in EU, and somebody told me you can only listen to music while you're in the app.

Hmm I dont know if you can run multiple things on PS4 yet but if you can access the web browser, you could stream music @ html5.grooveshark.com. Listen to that while you play? That is if you can do 2 things at once and if PS4 has HTML5 support.

Else I'd use one of those Dolby Digital headphone things so you plug in your PS4 via optical audio and then you plug in your ipod to it and it will mix both audio sources in one channel. Its a little tricky but I've done it on PS3.

Oh the Vita version is out on Europe? Didnt know what. I thought on PS3 at the moment and I swear I read you could listen to music and game just like you can Skype call while playing a game. Sorry about that then.

I actually did Music Unlimited awhile back when they had a $10 offer for + subscribers for a year.
It was awful. Truly awful. Servers were always down. Horrible selection of music. Just really piss poor. So yeah, $120 a year is joke. Truly a joke.

So in regards to this news. No mp3 support does not affect me personally at all. Although I can see how some people would choose to do so, I am a purist. I believe audio is just as much an integral part of the overall experience as visuals when done right, so I always choose to listen to the games audio and nothing else.

No DLNA support though? WTFriggingF? That really, truly blows.

MS can really score one positive here if they come out and say they support it, which considering they really have such a heavy focus on being the all in one entertainment center of your home entertainment experience, which has been made painfully obvious by resolutiongate, so they really could at least get one positive bullet point for myself if they do choose to support DLNA.

I should add, I do have both consoles preordered and paid off in full from Amazon. So I have no vested interest in either out doing the other, however I am a realist, and right now, even with this not so great news, the PS4 is clearly the superior console for my own needs, and that is as a gamer first and foremost.

Hopefully Sony hears the backlash and enables it later down the road, although I have to say that is not very likely, they clearly have to know how important DLNA is to people right now.

Oh well, they had to mess up some stuff, right??

I've always said that if either next gen console were to expand media functionality beyond the current generation (in other words, play .mkv files) I would immediately choose that one over the other. I didn't really expect either to have .mkv support, but I am absolutely surprised that the PS4 is taking such a big step backwards in functionality.

Why would any mention it before now? It's something we just take for granted at this point.

If I buy a new house I don't get excited that there will be running water... I just expect it to be there. If it's not, then I'm very likely to mention it.

Fair enough analogy but I don't expect anything and we're getting this in an open space now instead of leaving things in the dark. This way we can hit up the right people and let them know we want it so they can work on it even sooner.

That's one pseudo good thing that they can at least look into sooner instead of us just finding out when it comes out.

I haven't been keeping up with this since the initial blow up, but have we heard a "Why?" on the MP3 front yet?

Just cannot get my head around that shit. It can't just be some seriously OTT way to push Music Unlimited can it? Really?

i do have a pair of XP300s and that would be possible with the AUX port on the back but I wanted to use my 5.1 speaker setup.

First bit of retarded news I've heard for the PS4. Obviously a corporate shoe-in by the Sony suits, really not cool.

I hope they'll be content with the number of mugs who sign up at launch for them to bring mp3 support in the next update. I wouldn't be surprised if the had a target to reach.

No confirmations so far.
Major Nelson said he'll track down the answer, but that's hours ago.

When asked about custom soundtrack, Greenberg said you can snap Xbox Music.
When asked about "can you stream your synced collection without an Xbox Music pass though?" Greenberg said "I believe so."

We know Xbox One won't be a Windows Media Center Extender, but that doesn't mean no DLNA.

Basically, we don't know.

No MP3 support is inexcusable. What I would like to see is third party streaming services such as Spotify and Google All Access of which I'm subscribed to the latter.

No DLNA is really a bummer. PS3 was always so much better than 360 for this. Cannot give a single shit about MP3s or audio CDs though.

I personally had to cut back on getting both Launch Consoles due to having a 1 month gap between jobs. Now I am only getting the One at launch since the launch lineup is more interesting.

Having said that, if Microsoft does not offer DLNA or at least playback from external devices, I would seriously consider cancelling my pre order and waiting a few months or a year or so.

I really don't want to have another fucking box with my main TV. My plan was to migrate my 360 to my Computer area and have the One in the living room, while the PS3 is in my daughters room. However we stream a lot of content here in my house to all our devices, and I will simply not accept not being able to do so on a 2013 entertainment console.

If they're blocking MP3's to get you to use their unlimited music service, what's stopping them blocking Blurays one day to make you use their movie rental service?

Out of ALL the things sony could have messed up with the ps4, this is really a non issue.
I have to wholeheartedly disagree, with an asterisk.

While I personally do view my gaming console as just that, a gaming console, I used Universal Media Server and its prior incarnation PMS just as much as I played games on my PS3. In fact, I probably used it more when all is said and done. It was my absolute mainstay on weekend nights.

The ability to stream full 1080p with DTS support was just amazing. Truly amazing. And the overall support of various files was fantastic compared to the 360.

About the only positive to all of this for myself is although I did not plan on doing so, I can always leave my PS3 set-up in addition to the PS4 & One. Definitely not ideal, but it is doable, especially since my friend pointed out to me I can do passthrough with my cable box through the One, so that does still keep an HDMI input free.

I expect them to come back with a confirmation that they will have it.*

*functionality not available until sometime in 2014

Both of the previous Xbox consoles launches with this ability, I'll be surprised if they don't have it. Especially with the multimedia focus.

Yet I wouldn't expect Sony to do this either. Yet here we are. It's damn shady to force it through another subscription.

Mountain out of a molehill..?

I can't say that I ever used my PS3 for music. As a casual audiophile, the MP3 format is not something that resonates with me; even with a DAC/Amp connected to my PS3 through optical, it's not my primary source for listening to music.

The lack of DLNA is a total downer though, BUT the PS3 didn't come with DLNA either until further down its lifespan, so I wouldn't be immediately worried.

I can see why these are the major sore points though, but I'm optimistic that they'll be added later down the line.

Very disappointing that I'll have to keep hooking up my laptop to the TV just to listen to my music/ watch my movies/ display my photos in the living room. Guess that WD network hard drive I picked up a couple months ago was a waste.

My concern is this will also extend to any movie files downloaded onto your device or placed on a USB stick. I couldn't find any confirmation on their FAQ that we would be able to view media content outside of stuff bought on PSN and streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu.

All this negative press between the two consoles.

I don't understand.

I'm going to assume it has more to do with the consumers being extremely picky. More so than the fault of the developers providing a new console.

I just. I've never seen people so hateful.

Doesn't Sony get a cut of all Blurays?

Maybe what's important here is to have a console hermetically sealed to anything not sold to you by Sony. I mean, holy fuck is this thing locked down.

Are there any limitations that we know of for the browser?

I agree. While I do have to say that what Sony has done is fucked up, the truth of the matter is that the vast majority of people that buys home gaming consoles (meaning Average Joes/Casuals) won't care if there's no DLNA &/or a MP3 Player inside the console.

Heck, the Xbox 360 had a custom soundtrack option, & almost no one gave a damn about it.

I use DLNA a lot too but since when in this hype train machine for any of these next gen platforms has any of this type of stuff come up until now as if it matters the most right now.

From the thread about features that need more explanation:

I currently use my PS3 to stream music and video to my TV using PS3 Media Server, so I'm interested in knowing more about the support for DLNA, container/codec support, visualizer, whether we can stream audio while using other features in the OS, etc.

Apparently the answer was "no" to everything.

You can't really blame people for being disappointed for the new consoles taking steps back in several multimedia fetaures. These consoles are meant to be an improvement in every area aren't they? If we don't complain how else will they know that it's a problem?

I expected the WiiU not to support it because there isn't enough processing power, but Sony? The reason we need DLNA is because of external transcoding with Playstation Media Server. There will be files that cannot be played on the ps4 and this option is future proofing it.

Take for example FLAC as one of the other gaffers mentioned. He could transcode it on the fly. Also, your local players have terrible subtitle/mkv support. I also doubt you will support 10-bit mkv files as well. So please add DLNA in because then i don't have to drag my pc to my tv.

We do not like the fact that features from their own previous system have been cut to further an agenda. That agenda being to subscribe to some unknown music service (today is the first time I have heard of music unlimited). I was a launch day 60 GB PS3 buyer but can't buy a PS4 at launch because of the country I currently reside in but even if I was back, I would not buy the PS4 at launch because of the DLNA issue.

I'm sure it is, they seem to focus on talking about bring Music Unlimited to PS4 a lot, I just hope MS won't do the same with Xbox One and Xbox Music.

Cut features and decrease value of your most important product so you can forcibly push people to a service that if was any good wouldn't need you forcing people into it?

So I guess Apple should stop removing mp3 support from their products and push for iTunes radio or whatever and windows should do the same so it can force us to use some Zune streaming service... It doesn't work like that, all your doing is pissing people of an morally justifying hacking.

It baffles me they thought this kind of stunt would go unnoticed, shows how dumb they think we are.
