I wonder how far this'll extend.

Pit getting a Pitoo alt?

Mario getting a Dr. Mario alt?

Marth getting a Roy alt?

Captain Falcon getting an Ocarina of Time Ganondorf alt?
 
The mirrored pose suggests that its two players performing the same inputs, and the lack of a new character slot on the page suggests alternate costume rather than character, but there could be some other possibilities- such as an assist trophy or a taunt calling in another trainer. There are a lot of possibilities, but I'd say the small amount of evidence we have leans toward costumes.

He was already in brawl, along with Link's Shadow and Toon Link's Shadow
 
This confirms that Ridley will be an alternate costume for King K. Rool.

It's most likely Sakurai controlling both of them since he can dual wield two controllers at once. Or he got another staff member to do it to capture the pose perfectly.
 
Knowing Sakurai, this is probably just a ploy to get people fantasizing about alts, and giving them hope that they'll appear. When in the end, only like 3 characters will have alts.

Or they just input all of this through debug mode. I never once thought that any of these screenshots were legitimate captures. No doubt the team freezes the animation at the right spot and moves the models of the characters in such a way that it's funny.

Yeah, that's definitely the most logical possibility. Such codes exist for Melee and Brawl as well so I wouldn't be surprised.
 
Wario will have an alt, brah.
 
After Toon Link and now this guy it is pretty clear that from here on out we're just getting clones of the announced character.

So Falco, Louie, Female Villager, Proto Man, Funky Kong, Marill, Daisy, Shadow the Hedgehog, Prince Fluff Dry Bowser, Pittoo and Master Chief.

And that's the final roster.

Nice to see lots of new characters will make an appearance.

While you are correct, I think a Pitoo alt could actually feature new dialog reflecting his personality.

But very promising and exciting possibilities indeed!

Little Mac having alts of the SNES or Arcade protagonists would be much easier to accomplish.

Soda Popinski should be his own character anyway.

The Melee color still kept Peach's haircut and face, just giving her a different model for her clothes. An actual Daisy model would need a different face and hair style too in addition to the dress and crown. And also a different voice track, of course. If the Male Wii Fit trainer is a costume, it sounds like all that would be possible now.

All characters will have alternate costumes, of course. This is rather a case of an alternate character -- and pretty different than Wario, considering this is an actually different character rather than a radically different attire.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for a lot of similar cases, though. There are a few cases where this fits, because the Smash character's moveset can be attributed to a different character as well (as in this case, female Villager or Pokémon Trainer). But it's hard to imagine, say, Soda Popinski in Little Mac's place; it's even hard to imagine aesthetically different characters with similar movesets on each other's place, like with Captain Falcon and Ganondorf -- how would that work? Would Ganondorf crash the stage with his Blue Ganon or would Captain Falcondorf turn into Falcon? What about the different sizes and animations?

This seems to be mostly a counterpart thing -- characters that have a male/female counterpart (or something similar) will usually work. "Similar characters" like Fox/Falco/Wolf or Peach/Daisy could work, but I'm not sure -- Peach's moveset in Smash is nothing like Daisy, for example, although they fit stylistically. A similar dilemma can rise with Link; OoT Link would be great to have, but Smash Link's moveset is based on TP Link at this point, with the Bracer and the Gale Boomerang.
 
Now we only have to guess what will be Sakurai's megaton reveal for november SM3DWorld launch. Everything points to Rosalina, as we already have Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser (and Toad out of the equation I think).
 
Guessing Male WiiFit Trainer is just a costume, seeing as the official site lists Female WiiFit Trainer as just "Wii Fit Trainer". So if you pick male or female, you'll hear "Wii Fit Trainer wins" at the end of the match or whatever.
 
You guys are getting ridiculous with the alt model dreaming. It should still be the same character. Having Peach look like Rosalina or Mega Man look like Proto Man doesn't make sense since they'd still be calling the characters by their name. The roster would get convoluted.

Complete character swaps work for characters like WFT, Villager, and Pokemon trainer because those are titles and occupations where the character still performs the same action.

Luigi with a Mr.L model alt = makes sense
Luigi with a Waluigi model alt = stupid.
 
Really surprised at how many people are freaking out about this being a "wasted character slot." Male Wii Fit Trainer is clearly not a separate character and just an alt costume/version. Yeesh.

He/she's gonna be such a great troll character.

This is a pretty big thing. I wouldn't be surprised at all if certain characters with more androgynous names like Villager and Pokemon Trainer also have gender options, which would be really awesome. Tail swap for Pikachu and the other Pokemon with gender differences (if any come in) would be great too.

Costume swaps to characters that have an entirely different name like Rosalina and Daisy and maybe even Dr. Mario would be a bit more of a toss up since as some have said already, the announcer would be doing it wrong if they didn't change for said skins.

I predict lucario willl stay a dude though, it would be cool if there was like a laura bailey voice track saying " behold the aura" but I dunno if game freak would want that, same with mewtwo.

As far as costume swaps goes, Daisy .. eh I would rather her have an sports themed moveset. And Rosaline is an Drinks tea with galactus, so her having a similar moveset to peach, would not really make sense.

Did they miss the memo that Wii Fit Trainer can be either gender in their software, same with Villager?

Actually, worth noting that one thing about Wii Fit Trainer is that the character name is asexual, so they could use the same announcer voice samples to cover each.

Other asexual character names: Villager, Pokemon Trainer.
