Shu is not playing around ;)

Fuck. Yes. Shu!
I know it may be too early to read into things, but I hope he did actually talk to the devs about reintroducing MP3 support, and is not just trying to placate the fanbase.

I like the guy regardless, he's handled this situation as well as he can for now. All we can do is wait and see if any further developments happen in the coming days/weeks.

Link me to the part where John Mattrick said "I heard your demand for offline play. We talked with the Xbox One Dev team about it." please.

No doubt Shu is better at placating consumer concerns (which is't hard considring how awful Mattrick was), but if he end result is the same, it doesn't really change anything.

Mattrick said:
You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360.

Of course the reception was somewhat different to that given to Shu.

Remains to be seen. Let's be real. He can't go out saying "Thanks for your feedback. We'll add it asap!". This is something that needs to be discussed internally so it may take a little while before we get definite feedback from Sony on the matter.

My biggest concern here is that it seems like the OS must have been designed with no external media in mind so it might be difficult to add these features in. Hopefully they have something in mind. I can't imagine they are completely caught off guard by the uproar online.

That's my point. He didn't say "we are talking about the Xbox One issues internally" even once. Shuhei Yoshida does that right out the gate. A big difference.

And yeah. Don Mattrick of course, not John. Mindslip.

Edit: Nevermind, I read that as the "get the 360" thign that given as the answer for weeks. Sorry.

We will just have to wait a few weeks before we can say that Sony does not listen to costumer feedback as much as Microsoft.

I hope they put in support for more than just MP3, and CD as well.

Hell, lets go ahead and add MKV. PS4 would be a beast at high bitrate videos.

I mactually shocked that he didn't think lots of ppl used their ps3's like that. I use mine for movies and music, I even use its web browser

These things are connected; they know exactly how people use them.

edit: perhaps not a lot of people do use these features, but apparently the vocal minority does

Now that we know the XB1 supports DLNA....

get on that shit Sony! I'm fairly confident they'll do it eventually, but the sooner the better.

Let's look at Yoshi's statement from a PR perspective. He said:
- We know you want these features
- We talked with the dev team about it

Now two things can happen, either they patch it in, or they don't.

- They patch it in: Everything is fine, no bad PR.

- They don't patch it in: Again, two possibilities. Either they say
  • "We don't care about what you want"
  • "We would like to do it, but it is technically not possible" which anyone would call bs on.

Does anyone really think they would say any of the latter? If they plan on never including MP3 and other media support, Shuhei Yoshida couldn't have said what he did.

Pretty much, so many loops that it'll have to go through that to expect a confirmation right away is insane.

The fact that they already discussed it on the following day is already surprising.

So basically, this thread.

FAQ: no MP3/ DLNA support
GAF: FUCK that shit
Shu: We have heard and I will discuss with dev team
Some of GAF: There is hope
Some of GAF: I don't believe it
Rest of GAF: SHU IS AWESOME
Shu: I have discussed with dev team. We like that you use PS3's multimedia
Some of GAF: There is hope
Some of GAF: I don't believe it
Rest of GAF: SHU IS AWESOME

QFT.

The Shuhei deep throating every time he says a word is impressive though.

I don't think they'll add MP3 streaming. It's right before launch, there's bigger fish to fry, and in a few months everyone will have forgotten.

Question is: why not in the first place implementing it? Ah, yes, we know... It was intentionally to not do it. So why change that now? Because of a thread on GAF?

XBONE supports PlayTo which works ACROSS DLNA. PlayTo is nothing like actually supporting DLNA. That entire PlayTo thread is like everyone sticking their fingers in their ears saying "lalalalalalala I can't hear you"

You can start a video or playlist on your Windows PC and send output to your XBONE. You can't browse or start playback from the console, you can't use the console to connect to any DLNA/NAS server that you want, etc. It's basically Apple's AirPlay just working across the DLNA protocol.

Is it slightly better than the spot the PS4 is in now? You bet. Is it what everyone is asking for on PS4 (and even XBONE)? Not even close. Which is even more funny now that so many XBONE buyers are like "I'm good with this!!" Ok....... But it's not what you asked for and is MS still leveraging their own products (ie Windows PC required)

Call me paranoid or whatever but I can´t help to somewhat think this is all in their marketing plan/strategy.

To first announce this cause they KNOW ppl would be upset, and then solve it to show goodwill.

The guys that handles this kind of stuff up there at the top are not stupid.

that's weak. I would copy a ton of music to my ps3 and having playing in the background of certain games while I played. I am not cool with this.

Time. They have a strict deadline and no unlimited ressources.

You honestly believe that they didn't have time to implement MP3 streaming, but for some reason, did have time to implement their subscription based music streaming service?

Okay.

The fact that MP3 is not there at launch (which it is or virtually any entertainment device even Sony's own) but MU is shows this was a purposeful cas grab.

It's simply th most logical way to look at this, lets just hope they decide t add i support later.

Okay.

It was obviously of higher priority for them. But that doesn't change the fact that they only have limited time and can not implement every feature for launch.

You have much higher faith in Sony than I do, I guess.
It would be weird for Sony to not add DLNA support on PS4 :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Living_Network_Alliance

"DLNA is run by a board of directors consisting of 9 members. There are 8 permanent representatives from the following companies: Broadcom, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony Electronics, Technicolor and one elected by the promoter members, AwoX."

No weirder than MS not adding DNLA support to theirs for exactly the same reason.

Okay.

I'ts an obvious cash-grab move, so I won't defend Sony on this, but I'd say that MU is not developed by the SCE OS-team, but rather an app developed by SME instead.

Of course, if it turns out that MU is built deep into the OS ( aka can only be made by the OS-team ), I'd eat my words, but I find it highly unlikely that the Unlimited services are made by the OS team.

Not just GAF, word's gotten out and will spread even more post launch. So yes, I'm confident it'll be changed at some point. This was clearly an attempt to sell their music service, but I think the backlash will force them to reverse it. And my assessment still stands.

Aaah okay. Still, I hope it puts even a small amount of pressure on Sony to patch in support. Thanks for the explanation.

That it was a higher priority than standard audio format playback for them says a lot about their motivations.

Shu getting shit done I see.

Like I said earlier in the thread, the difference between Sony today and Sony from 2004 when they were throwing away their lead in personal media players is that senior management is more responsive so the stupid decisions don't tend to stick like they used to.

It won't be there for launch, but I'm sure they will get it out for the first big update.

One thing I expect them to do is make MP3 playback terrible or the player lame and in that way they will push MU to people with custom playlists and other extra stuff. They will have a free option, but that's it.

You honestly believe that they didn't have time to implement MP3 streaming, but for some reason, did have time to implement their subscription based music streaming service?

Okay.

His comments imply they had to prioritise which was more important. For (unfortunately obvious) reasons they prioritised Sony services.

That doesn't mean MP3s aren't coming, just that somewhere in Sony, their services came first.

I disagree with that - I think it was a bad decision. But lets see what features they add post-launch.

To be fair you're not wrong. I mean putting media streaming means putting an entire client in there, hooking it into the OS, wide testing, etc.

I think what most are saying is that it was bullshit that Sony spent THAT time doing all of that for their own paywall music service instead if doing it for the service/feature that everyone already uses and expects.

one is a 180, entirely turning around on the publically stated direction they were moving in.

The other is a comment on a potential future feature that has not yet even been announced. They aren't 'removing' the inability to play MP3s. They just currently don't play MP3s.

Boy, that's some serious mental gymnastics right there.

That is almst certainly purpose, must have said this a thousand tims, but there is no way a multimedia device in 2013 launch without MP3 unless they'e specifically tryin to push another service it just doesnt happen. MP3 is about as standard as physicay possible betwen almost all multimedia devices.

I think I used music on my 360 once or twice near the beginning of the generation. Not since. But I would like to see it come to both systems for those that do enjoy using it. Cool that @Yosp is getting on it.

This is even more asinine than not including MP3 support. Seriously. GAF Hivemind posts are fucking dumb, STOP DOING IT.
