Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

No justification either. I want to know the thought process that led to that statement.

The only explanation fandumb ever needs.

We need to keep in mind that alternate costumes are constrained to the original character's move set, so some alternate costumes wouldn't really work or make sense. This still leaves a lot of room though (e.g. female villager, dry Bowser, Dr. Mario, Rosalina, etc.). Projectile based moves or moves using different entities would also need a swapped model.

Well, I don't really expect that much. We might get about 5-7 alt costumes, and that's it.

Mmm, knowing Sakurai, sadly I dont think so. No, I dont mean the shitty change colors.
Characters like Peach>Daisy>Rosalina are as perfectly doable as what they did with Wiifit trainer. In fact, thats what this game needed to feel fresh from the old ones (becuase, as someone that has all smash games as some of their favourite games, I'm not seeing anything in this one that makes me hyped in the slightlest, in fact, all the contrary, that is why I dont enter much this thread).
Until I don't see Sakurai say, all characters have different alts that are costume/character changes that make sense, im not believing anything.
He did it with wario only last time, and I thought only doing it to him was cheap as hell.

(Mostly) alternate textures is what people usually think when they say alternate costumes. And, again, Peach > Daisy > Rosalina would be far from an alternate costume. I think that Wario's situation is also quite different, because there's genuinely no problem in using a different version/appearance of the character as long as it's still essentially the same character. Dr. Mario is perhaps close to Wario's situation on that matter.

When it comes to actually alternate characters, like in Wii Fit Trainer's situation, it's harder to pull off. It works for counterparts, because they can actually replace each other on their respective games -- but Peach and Daisy? Aside their generally similar appearance and status, they are very different characters who would use very different moves. And it's not like Fox/Falco/Wolf or Marth/Roy either (who could work like that, probably), who have a sort of "generic", series-inspired moveset.

I wouldn't write off the chance of more alternate models for counterparts and alternate versions (WarioWare Wario, Dr. Mario) of characters, but I see no indication of genuinely discrete alternate characters yet. It's possible, but let's not jump the gun.

I think Daisy is the perfect example of a character who already got reduced to that though. Peach's yellow dress and orange hair costumes aren't based on anything about Peach herself, but on Daisy. If they're doing that, why not just go through with it completely and give her a different haircut and face model, as well as voice recordings? In many games, like Mario Kart and Party, Daisy is basically identical to Peach anyway (even Double Dash which had character specials).

The only times where she shows any unique abilities is in games with "special" abilities, like Mario Power Tennis. It's quite easy to ignore those few appearances and make her just a skin for Peach. It'd leave a few odd references (like the turnip and Toad), but they could just reskin those too or ignore them if they don't think she's worth the trouble.

Anyway, you're right that it's still a jump from where they're now, but this news shows that they're going beyond where they had gone before, at least.

After playing Zelda in 60fps/3D at an event today, I REALLY hope Smash is the same.

It's achievable, so aim for it! 60fps 3D is SO good and highly immersive.

I could totally go for model swaps like Fusion Suit Samus, SS Link, LttP Toon Link, and the obvious Dr Mario. Would be sooooo good. No new movesets or anything like that needed, but model/voice swaps.

Only if he got confirmed. I'm not sure who shotgun for him first.

Did you shotgun for him in first thread? I'm not sure if it was you or someone else.

I wasn't around during the first thread. This is barely the fifth week I'm able to post. I would have if I were, though. Oh well, seems like I'll have to find/make my own Marth avatar once he's announced.

Just as a note, it was me who shotgunned Marth in the first thread. I'm an inveterate lurker and don't post though.

Wow, a Caramelldansen image. That was the in thing when we were waiting for Brawl!

Still wonder how many people realise the original dance clip came from an adult VN.

The main issue with female Trainer would be her Pokemon. How would they be differentiated from the male trainer? More extra colors? Some random costume parts? Actually attempt to skin other random Pokemon onto their skeletons? It's not as simple as the villager and Wii Fit Trainer.
Do female Pokemon look different? If not then just changing the trainer should be enough.

"Alternate costumes can't reference different characters unless the original game had a gender choice option" pretty much is an arbitrary rule. If we look at the current alternate colors, there's no such rule, like Link's Dark Link and Zelda OoT colors show. So, saying that alternate costumes can't go beyond a certain point, when we apparently just got an alternate costume revealed that seems to go past previous rules (like changing voice and general body shape) seems like drawing an arbitrary line.

Of course, there's no proof yet they might cross the "character name" line, but they seem like they're crossing some of the lines we apparently had before, so it's not out of question.

Never played OoT so I can't answer that, but isn't Dark Link too "generic" in essence that it works as a palette color (it's essentially Link with black colors and black skin)?

My stance is like that because you know how Smash fans react - they ride the slippery slope and somehow complain.

As word of the wise - do not assume a Smash fan knows the games being represented in Smash. The fact that they only know Pokemon through anime, know Mario only from the early games, and think Wii Fit Trainer female as the "default" shows.

I thought I'd get the ball rolling with creepy fanart:

Sonic can have Shadow as an alt...... He he he.
I really hope he doesn't. :(

Edit: Oh shit, Metal Sonic!
Metal Sonic should be what Sonic turns into when he picks up a Metal Box.

Would be that much more amusing during Classic Mode when the game arbitrarily decides Sonic should be the Metal character you fight.

So I went to try and find that ridley mod to see it in an actual clear shot, I ended up down some rabbit hole of smash mods.

There's some crazy shit in here, seriously:

See guys he told you Batman would make an awesome Smash character

Sakurai you clever dog, introduce the alternate costume on a traditional american holiday where people dress up as spooks non?

I will hope this leads to more alternates for all the characters, it would be tres bein.

So are we assuming this means costumes are a thing? It potentially could be a new character (which would be pretty dumb), or it could just be a special alt costume for the trainer.

Yes, give me shirtless Wolf. Then I shall rub my hands in glee.

People have been saying since the game was announced that Villager and Wii Fit Trainer might get gender swap alternate costumes -- this doesn't necessarily have implications for the rest of the roster. Those two characters are unique in that they are nameless avatars.

He just means costumes that don't make sense isn't something he likes (see: bunch of Bamco games). He is pretty fine with alt costumes that make sense.

Sadly no one will understand what you posted.
