Call of Duty: Ghosts online multiplayer discussion thread

In terms of the MP, Ghosts is probably my favourite COD ever:

- Focus is on gunplay and not overpowered killstreaks.

- No one weapon seems really OP (yet).

- Maps are almost all great (and larger than usual).

- Knife has been nerfed by the new sticky animation. Now it's only used as a last resort weapon and there aren't a bunch of people running around just stabbing instead of shooting.

- New Sat Com system is great in how it encourages teammates working and sticking together.

- The lean is actually useful on smaller maps and in confined spaces.

- sliding looks cool...

It sucks that some modes have been removed, but I've been exclusively playing TDM and Domination, and having a great time. I loved Blops 2, however I've never enjoyed COD more than I have in the last few days.

Am I alone on this?
Although I'm not ready to put Ghosts' multiplayer ahead of the first Modern Warfare, I'm with you on how good it actually is.

Design-wise, this is the closest Call of Duty has come to being the kind of multiplayer component I wanted. I love how spacious the maps are, and how they facilitate a 'not too crazy, not too boring' pace.

The amount of emphasis there is on shooting is beyond refreshing. Having more ground-based killstreaks turned out to be a great, if not controversial decision that I think more people will appreciate as they continue acclimating to Ghosts' style. It's definitely just a reshuffling of the deck, but better than its getting credit for. In my opinion, of course.

I'm sure this has been asked 100 times but is there any work-around for getting the app on incompatible devices? Trying to get it on my Bionic.

so what do you guys think is the best tactical? wary about spending my points on something after that stupid canister bomb lol

Would it have killed them to add something that allows us to see our pings on PC? I swear there are matches where everyone has to be around 100-150ms

Dude Seige is fucking dead 80% of the time. All my games end by time on that. No matter which gametype I play.

The game is currently listing 271280 players online for the PS3 version. Anyone have any PC/360 numbers for comparison sake?

Dang, I remember back in 2001 when Socom came out it hit 10k around Xmas. All us PS2 people were giddy about how high that number was.

As for Ghost, I'll probably pick it up even though I've grown bored the series. It's just the safest choice between the 3 shooters for me. I never liked KZ's sluggish controls and don't want to play in the large scale maps of Battlefield. I just want a simple shooting game and COD fulfills that need. I just wish the maps were more similar to the first Modern Warfare instead of the "you can be shot from 20 different angles" that all the rest of the iterations have offered.

the bigger maps sound great. I thought the maps in Blops 2 were waaay too small so I didn't play that for long.. Also, not having shit constantly raining down death from the air sounds real good too. I think I'll pick this up for ps4..

So many issues with this game...

-The maps are far to big for the small player count
-As usual, spawns are awful and revenge spawning is back
-The lag compensation is a disaster; far worse than the previous titles, including BOII which had the worse lag
-No dedicated servers, host migration still very much active
-Weapon damage is off the charts, maximum of two shots and you're going down fast
-The unlock system is disgusting and discourages you from experimenting as it out of fear of being suck with a bad weapon for a shit ton of games it takes to earn enough points to buy something better
-The map design and layout is awful and heavily encourages camping; too many routes and each room has half a dozen + ways in
-The resolution is really, really bad to the point where it's difficult to make players out (PS3 version)
-The entire mp layout/options/menus are confusing
-Quickscopping is very much still in the game and seems to be easier to do than ever

On the plus side of things...

-Footsteps are back and you can hear shit!
-Weapon variety is decent
-Gunplay is the focus, you rarely see any killstreak other than the satcom
-UAV no longer dominates the game - they're called in 24/7 but they're no where near as good as the previous, traditional UAV's
-Knifing is hit or miss, not useless like BOII's knifing

Overall the polygon review was dead on on the MP.

Everything listed here has me excited to finally play my PS4 version.

I'm with you on the unlock system. It's not very good. But camping? I find it fun to camp sometimes but I can't think of one good place to do it on any map. There's a shitload of ways for someone to come up behind you no matter where you are. The layouts are ridiculous.

Not a fan of the bigger maps just yet. There is way too much downtime between kills in some maps and campers are having a ball. The killstreaks are kind of lame too. Honestly, this feels like some off brand Call of Duty. So many things feel off.

How's extinction mode?

Do you really just protect a drill the whole time or is there more to it? How many levels are there to choose from?

Only issues I have so far is that the spawns are seriously terrible, like worse than Black Ops II.

I like the maps, but some are just way too big for 6v6.

I'm with you on the spawns, but I'm actually enjoying the bigger maps. I bet that the feeling of them being too large will go away in the next gen version, as well.

I'm not quite certain that it's a problem with this game yet, but the problem with MW3's maps was partially camping because of the myriad ways to get to any location.

I know that sounds counterintuitive. Even though traditional map design with three lanes allows you to "intelligently camp" certain spots of the map, you could still cover zones of the map, and you'd know where your enemy is. I loved to play zones in BO and BO2.

Conversely, with map design like MW3, if you cannot move anywhere without getting shot/stabbed in the back, you train players to be either always moving everywhere or you train them to be ultra careful. When players are ultra careful, they'll camp dumb things like corners just because they know if they move forward, there's 8 ways an enemy could get behind them for a kill.

It's one of those weird things where they do something to have one effect (more lanes to keep people moving), but because of the constant effect of getting shot in the back, they conditioned some players to be as cautious as possible. And sometimes that meant sitting with their back to the corner.

Anyway, not certain that's the case here, but I'm noticing a whole lot of lanes and I'm getting killed from behind a lot. Combined with the bad spawns, I wouldn't be surprised if players end up camping a whole lot more just for safety.

Why are UAVs useless? How do they work?

They're now known as satcom's and placed on the ground, so it's not as easy to destroy them. Additionally, they no longer 'ping' the entire map. Now they ping a very small portion of the map around you and only you. If you and your team deploy them all at once, the ping/refresh rate increases, and if you're lucky enough you have four out at once it's basically a blackbird/orbital vsat.

Posted these yesterday in OT. Man MP is so "hard"

spawns suck
you cant tell enemies from the environment
radar/uav sucks
it takes forever to rank up (points) and find a gun you like
lag
maps are huge for 6v6 (no 9v9) and multiple levels , hard to find a good spot,
leaning and sliding are pretty much worthless ( iw made a huge deal about it)
kill streaks suck (maybe because im a low level?)
kill cam hit marker is completely off ( just like every other cod game)
some maps are balanced for domination (2 flags are close to 1 team)

Players have to be waiting for next gen, it's the only explanation. At launch on PS3 black ops II had 1.2 million users online. On Ghosts it hasn't gone over 250k.

Max's impressions are dead on, IMO.

Awesome video that sums up a lot of the problems.

The maps are indeed a mess. Way too many points of entry for rooms and the maps often have multiple vertical levels that make it a chore to get around. Go up here, go down here. Uggggh I just want to find the action.

He was also spot on about the K/D ratio being fairly low for a COD game. On average I'm getting about 8 kills and 5 deaths, which is a little weird compared to past games. The spawning, crummy maps, and just not being able to find people at times all play a part in this. Makes the game feel unexciting and slow paced.

Also the upgrade system is so strange. You have multiple guys to unlock each with their own loadouts. Then you have to unlock the loadout slots as well as the gear, but the squad points you get to unlock things take a while to accumulate, so it feels like it'll take an eternity to to get your squad up to snuff. *rips hair out*

Do you die much faster in this then BLOPS 1/2?

Seems like you die faster to me like 1 bullet fast... not really a fan considering there is hardcore mode.

Also while I liking the maps - I am getting bored of missing action and running around. If I don't want to spawn in constant firefights but if I wanted to run around looking for people I'd play BF4.

PC version needs more players in pretty much every big map. FFA and TDs on some of them are horrible and Ground War has few people playing it for at least Aussies.

It doesn't even really ping around you does it?

The way I figure, it goes:

1 SAT COM - basically does nothing until you, or one of your teammates see an enemy in the game, you hear this when the characters shout stuff like "He's in the construction zone!". That enemy then shows up on the radar.

2-3 - Basically the UAV from previous games. Having 3 of them up decreases the time between the pings.

4 - Works like an Orbital VSAT

It pings but only very, very close proximity (which kind of makes it useless). Another thing to remember is the default starting classes have the 'off the gri'd perk unlocked, so they're immune to satcom's. If you haven't been seeing people on radar, that's why.

I can't believe I fell into the CoD hype again!

Every. Fucking. Year. I tell myself I won't buy into it this time cause last time I got bored after a few weeks. This franchise went downhill after WaW.

This time however, this game is so fucking atrocious that after 2 days I'm putting it up for sale for $45-50. I'll have to stomach the financial loss, but this is it. CoD is dead (has been fucking dead)

Ghosts is an embarrassment.

Ah thanks, I guess I've never really put one down near enemies before to get that effect. I don't mind the way it works, 3 kills is easy enough where teammates can consistently get it, but it's not up all the time like UAV was in BO2.

Wiretap is an amazing perk btw, and hilariously OP in free for fall. Everytime anyone puts a SAT COM down you get a free UAV.

pc has 18,711
360 has 485,727

Didn't Halo 4 barely hit 400k? That number would put it as most played title on the 360...

According to Kotaku this was BLOPs 2 last year:

WaW was your pinnacle? Gross...

Wow, this game is awful. I've never been so disappointed in a CoD on the first night as I was with this. Pop in graphics, freaking haze all over the place, terrible maps, imbalanced guns, and I GOT STUCK IN THE GEOMETRY 4 TIMES IN TWO HOURS.

The Maniac is downright stupid. The dog is stupid. They made the menus confusing.

I'm sorry, but Infinity Ward has lost it. I'll give the game a few more nights to redeem itself, but as of now, this game is a stinker in my book.

Also, this is easily the ugliest CoD since World at War, maybe uglier.

I disagree with people saying the lean is worthless. On really tight maps like Strikezone it is actually quite helpful, as long as you know where people are/what direction they are coming from.

I feel this game is a bit like Ghost Recon (just wait and let me explain) in that there's a lot of focus on uncovering enemies who aren't easily visible. Without UAVs to rely on you have to use all the other tools the game gives you. For example, the Recon perk that highlights enemies on-screen who have taken explosive damage. This includes tactical grenades, so you can charge up a 9 banger, throw it into a room and it lights everybody up orange for a couple seconds. If you use the lean from cover you're slightly less susceptible to their stunned blindfire.

Was getting a lot of use out of this playing Domination, with people all rushing around in groups. Maybe I could have just crouched and edged around the corner, but the lean felt like it was working for me.

WaW was your pinnacle? Gross...

It wasn't the pinnacle. CoD 2 and 4 were the best. The IW that made this piece of shit are clearly not the same IW that made those games. Not even just metaphorically speaking, literally.

I can go on and on about how much this multiplayer sucks, but I've seen enough people in this thread and elsewhere describe the same feelings. Id rather play WaW than pop this piece of bird shit back into my console though

This is truly is a mess. I normally put days worth of time into Call of Duty games. I can't see myself getting to the 15 hour mark with this one. What a shame.

What's the issue with spawning?

Someone people are complaining the maps are too big and it takes too long to find someone... and then others are complaining about spawning in front of enemies.

What's the percentage of each one happening vs the percentage of spawning 3 seconds from players.

I usually have at least 2 days worth of game time in each CoD. With MW2 and the prior ones probably being even more than that.

5 hours into this and I'm done. I've got a buyer for $50.

I don't know what it is, but that's exactly what's going on. You'll wander for 30 seconds without seeing anybody, die, and then die again immediately when you spawn. Something is messed up there.

Woody recently put up his impressions video. It's essentially the exact same issues I have with the game.

As some people said before, the maps are too big, you don't have enough health and the spawn system is ridiculous. As a fan of the Riot Shield there are few situations where I can be useful. I might have to camp or switch to Sniper rifles...

The maps (except for like 3) are way to big at least for the PC version, yet you still get spawning in front of people or right close by at least in FFA. So they are spawning people near each other on these large maps; go figure..

This was the first game since CoD4 that played up gunplay more then anything. It surprises me because I thought the importance of gunplay was gone after all these years.

The problem is literally everything else, the lowered health (for some reason they thought this was a good idea), shady p2p servers, and uninspiring maps ruins it all.
