Because Masked Marth is a flavor of the month design that doesn't really mean anything to the series and Marth as he's portrayed now is the iconic hero and mascot of the entire Fire Emblem series.
Given the choice to represent the entire series versus one specific game that just happens to be new (and might not even be by the time Smash is out), it just makes sense all around to represent the entire series.
You're basically talking about cutting the Pikachu of the Fire Emblem series for Dedenne of the Fire Emblem series because he's the latest Pokemon. It also doesn't help you that Marth is a long time Smash vet, and an incredibly popular one.

I still don't get why people want marth REPLACED by another FE Character that is more recent. He's the original. You don't replace pikachu with a newer pokemon.
You don't get rid of the face of the franchise. Likewise, everyone wanting chrom to replace Ike are silly. Why would sakurai throw away a perfectly good reusable character? You can't really apply Ike's moveset to chrom or any other FE main character, and it would be a waste to throw away all the time and effort put into Ike.
Keep both Marth and Ike, and then add chrom/lucina (or both at the same time, zelda/shiek or ice climbers style).
Also, the fact that we've seen no new characters since E3 makes me think we'll wait til E3 again to see more. We have enough veterans left to fluff the smash site until then.

Yeah, I would bet that we might get three newcomers for December Direct, if not then next E3.
Yeah, the game "should be" much better than Brawl because the speed and game itself would be between Melee and Brawl. Also they took tripping mechanic out. There are few balance notes.

So, would you all be happier or disappointed if Sakurai decided to just reveal veteran characters up to the game's release and leave most of the new characters a surprise? I've heard a lot of complaints about how the Dojo spoiled people too much and such, but I also hear about people wanting to see certain characters revealed. What's the consensus on this exactly?

I would be more happier if Sakurai decided to do this. I would love to have a lot of newcomers being surprises to me but unfortunately i'm pretty sure that we would get spoiled by leaked games or leakers. I'm not sure if I should avoid the leaks or not since I'm going to make /OT/
I'm excited to see if Sakurai would take that way, and kept it solid TIGHT until worldwide release date.
I want to see Captain Falcon ASAP. Also, I actually wish the Dojo revealed all of the characters before release. I only got to see the others through grainy youtube videos before release. The idea of a fighting game being spoiled is very bizarre to me.

Just as long as they have some sort of newcomer reveal at next E3, I'd be fine with them focusing on veterans otherwise. It'll be nice to have veterans confirmed periodically like we have been, and having the new characters be mostly a surprise would be lots of fun.
Especially if this gets a worldwide release. Please let this get a worldwide release.

I have a pretty good feeling about getting Ike. He has his own moveset, and I don't think they'd just junk a character that they have figured out already.
Plus, I felt like Awakening made a lot of references to Ike, more so than other lords. I feel like he's popular internally.

Mewtwo was THAT CLOSE to be in Brawl, but you have to blame that on SEGA for last minute agreeing to let Sonic in SSBB.
Yeah, I know that feel, but this smash doesn't feel nearly as much of a re-design as brawl was from melee. Honestly, it seems like they just kept brawl's engine and tweaked it up from there. I think it makes it more likely to see returning fighters.
Plus, without Ike, how will Sakurai recreate Donut Man?

Not popular enough, characters are not unique enough between each other to waste development time on.

People put few informations together, so basically we lost Mewtwo and Roy and the game being delayed because of Sonic addition.
They asked SEGA before the Brawl development start, so SEGA said no. When it is already further in the development, so SEGA decided to change their minds and ask Nintendo to include Sonic in Brawl at last minutes. Hence the delay and incomplete files on Mewtwo and Roy.
I don't think they made a new engine for this game. That's not an issue though, a lot of games use past engines and tweak them.
Yea, I don't mind seeing returning characters being announced. It's cool to see a brand new one here and there, but the vast majority need to stay secret until launch, then I can stay off the web for a few weeks until I get everything I can unlocked.
Awesome, I forgot about that. No tripping and better speed (even if slightly) is a major plus. I was never in to Smash that crazy competitive, but casual play with my friends and just slipping and falling randomly does suck major balls.

If they did, then we shouldn't worry since they already finished with their first prototype engine ever since June 2012. It has been a year and half since they completed first prototype engines. I would like to believe that it is easier to adjusting the codes afterward you have first prototype. I could be wrong.
1) apparently they were, that is how wolf got in.
2) wolf is way different, and Falco is differentiated enough to be a Ken.
3) People like star fox characters, why is you not liking something should limit another. Its not like ridley where its a thematic issue.

I don't think they were going to put him in either way. The last minute addition of Sonic was the most likely cause for the delay. If they were still adding characters at that point it would have been pushed back anyway. Keep in mind their original Target was Christmas time and Smash Bros. would have been a huge draw.
From a mechanics perspective, knockback and DI look quite different.

I think that's definitely tweakable from the initial engine. But in terms of character skeletons and other basic elements, it would not surprise me if Brawl's engine was the starting point.
