It's unbelievable that Don't Front is a COD exclusive and Survival is in the album. It makes absolutely no sense at all.Overall I found the album mediocre at first but it really grew on me.

Bad Guy is the best song he released in years, truly masterpiece.

gotta relisten again

Yeah, Yeezus was good. But then NWTS, MNIMN and MMLP2 were released. They are all better albums and make Yeezus obsolete.
Every album you mentioned is absolutely blown away by Yeezus.

Though I hate their rap reviews typically, Pitchfork panning this album is a good thing, because at least somebody told the truth. There are some good tracks here, but as a whole this albums is just not good.

So people who like it are lying?

I ain't gon lie I wasn't feeling this album when I first heard it. To be quite honest, I didn't even like any of the singles he released and the only thing that impressed me was the I'm Back reference on Rap God (word to the FCC). But for real though, I can't hate on a man that's 41 years old putting out verses like his 3rd one on Baby, Evil Twin, making introspective songs like Headlights and Beautiful Pain, and still making conceptual tracks such as doing proper Stan sequel.

I'm not gon sit here and lie and say that there weren't any corny punchlines, but honestly there wasn't anything worse than that window pane/pain line on LTWYL or talking about how his filet smoking weed. It's not the best album of the year (I enjoyed MNIMN and Old more), but if enjoying the majority of this album including the bonus joints means that I shouldn't have an opinion on anything Hip Hop then take my hall pass away from me. This is a solid 7-7.5/10.

That Guy With The Glasses's Rap Critic does an MMLP retrospective/MMLP2 review.

He
actually rates the sequel higher than the original
, mostly owing to the run from the Ken Kannif skit to the end of the album, excepting Kim, dragging it down. I don't disagree that the album is good, and that it serves pretty well as a followup to the original rather than just using the name as a sales gimmick, but I wonder if he'd be quite so kind to it without the launch hype.

If I recall correctly, he also gave Recovery a good review.

Wicked Ways is amazing. Beautiful Pain is pretty good. Groundhog Day is great. Baby hasn't quite grabbed me yet, and I didn't really like Desperation.

3/5 that should have been on the album. No doubt about that.

My bad, didn't see that video in a quick scan of his reviews for the site. Still, half the video is about Lil' Wayne's verse and the rest is "Em's verses on this song are good, so I decided to buy the CD", not commentary on the whole album. Bit like saying someone liked Encore 'cause they heard Like Toy Soldiers and Mockingbird (which are both quality tracks for my money).

Though to be honest I didn't even listen to Recovery so I can't comment on that.

I think if you take out both extremes, the stans and those who are not into Eminem, you will find a pretty solid project. The best material Eminem has put out since TES/8MILE. And if you already enjoy Em and the things he raps about or his style in general you will find a lot of little details and callbacks to his earlier work.

I rated it a 7/10 only because I think the lows are super low and unnecessary, but overall the standout tracks really hit the spot. Could have been a 8.-8.5 out of 10 project for me personally if the bonus tracks were mixed in over some of the actual tracks on the album.

But who knows you might hate it. No way to get a consensus on music. I know a lot of people like Yeezus a lot, even consider the AOTY but besides a song and a half I can't get into it.

Maybe Em should have fashioned it as a double album with 10 tracks on each disk. I am sure he recorded more than 30 tracks.

A song like Don't Front doesn't even make sense as a COD bonus exclusive because its a real cool callback to old school rap with Buckshot yet I doubt the COD crowd would appreciate it. Survival fit but Don't Front? Who the hell makes these decisions?
yup...I don't get Yeezus love here either...Trashy Trash is what I say, but that's the beauty of music...here's my mini-review of the album...nothing surpasses The Way I am or Renegade for "favorite" em song, but there was some very very close ones on the album. He's still got it, just have to get a bit more coherency with lyrica/beats/production IMO..
EDIT ok...so just finished up, and listed all the tracks I think are worth listening to...only a few duds IMO, very lyrical album, not much for the radio outside of Berzerk, the Monster, and Rap God just to show his lyrical prowess. He has some very strong lyrical hits here, but I feel there's more to make a song, and Em is still somewhat lacking in controlling his strong vocabulary and stop n' go skill to be more coherent with the beats. But surprisingly, there are some really strong beats here with amazing hooks that might surprise many fans. Here's my top songs, what I feel are adequate in not only lyrics, but presentation and flow. Not in order...

Beautiful Pain
So Much Better
Rhyme or Reason
Wicked Ways
Legacy
Survival
Evil Twin
Rap God (track needs to be cut IMO over 6mins with no hook lol)

Now, this is not that the other tracks aren't great, but I feel either his lyrical skills save the day or the humor wins out, as there aren't as coherent or focused as these 8. Still some very unique tracks in the remainder of the album. Berzerk is a tribute to rap of yesteryear and Bad Guy is another track worth lyrical praise, but goes a bit off the wall towards the end and loses coherency IMO but if you listen to it like a fan, you'll catch all sorts of brilliance. Still think it could've been done better.. tracks I didn't mention like So Far are just trashy, but thankfully there's only 3 or so on the delux album, mostly everything you listen too once and can play the album from start to finish.

Well there ya go. After loving Drake's latest album, and finally feeling like he's giving up on being some lyrical beast and is embracing his singing/melody style in full force, has found his stride. Out of 15 tracks, I feel you can let it ride, with very few duds in 305 is my City and Connect. His strongest lyrical tracks (Pound Cake Tuscan Leather) pale in comparison to Em's weakest, but his song coherency has been exceptional with his mixture of melodies and rap. Two very different albums, but both should find great success this year, and are great examples of the diversity in rap.

Above all, Eminem remains the lyrical king, look forward to his next album, where he shouldn't feel as threatened or challenged in his position, and should likely focus on more beats/melody to his track list which would make for a much more radio friendly album.

Headlights is great.

I'm not a big fan of Fun, but I think Nate Ruess has a great voice.

Edit: great voice autotuned, I should clarify.

I'm disappointed that only one other rapper appeared. What the crap.

I'm okay with this.

Plenty of albums recently have been too reliant on having too many collaborations.

An (Em written) verse from Dre would've been nice, always good to hear those two together. Not really sure which track of the album he'dve fit on, though.

My ratings:

ib004MlatZYGBn.png

No real arguments, 'cept maybe for Stronger Than I Was.

^^

Should it be lower or higher?!

Lower, for me. It's like a two, two and a half star track at best. I don't mind Em singing, I liked Hailey's Song back on Eminem Show and it's okay when he does it on some hooks. I just don't know what the hell was going on with Stronger Than I Was, though. Doesn't make sense in the context of the album, or even just generally as a song from Em. At the very least, I wouldn't put it on the level of Survival and Asshole.

Different people like different things at different levels though, so if you were into it on some level that's cool.

I liked STIW at first, but now it's probably my least played track. It really doesn't make a difference in the album. It's worse than all bonus tracks for sure.

Glad to see so many high ratings in there. I'm downloading the album right now. I know I like rap god and monster, if rap god isn't the best thing on the album, I'll consider this one damn good.

You'll be in for a treat then. Rap God is good but definitely middle-tier compared to some of the other tracks.

After a few listens I gotta say this is a really solid album.

There's a couple of songs I don't care for, but otherwise I think it's better than Recovery by a large margin.

Holy shit man, Headlights! God damn Headlights!
Also, Survival, Bad Guys[though a weak start], Rhyme or Reason... like em a lot.
Only halfway through the album, but seems pretty damn good so far...
Why are people hating on this? I have no clue.

Damn, I really liked Bad Guy once I understood what was going on.

Exactly!

Anyways, got through the whole album.
Pretty good, I think there's some classics here. Headlights, Rap God are some really good songs.
There's also some filler... Asshole seems particularly mediocre[not awful though]
I want to say, a lot of remixes in here. They all sound hype, but still four is a little much for one LP. He could practically call this the Classic Rock LP, lol.
I'd say 4/5. However, I just went through it once, so take that as you will.
BTW, no love for Survival? Sounds awesome to me.

Picked up album today

Not gonna lie, I'm a bit disappointed

I don't regret the purchase (I don't think so at least), but yeah just a little let down

After a few days, this is the optimal tracklist with the music provided.

1. Bad Guy
2. Parking Lot (Skit)
3. Rhyme or Reason
4. So Much Better
5. Rap God
6. Brainless
7. the chorus on "So Far..." Yes only the chorus, repeated 3 times. Like an Interlude
8. Headlights (not because I like the song, but because of the message)
9. Evil Twin
10. Baby
11. Groundhog Day
12. Wicked Ways

That's a decent album. Like a good 2004 tier Eminem mixtape or something.

That's my rating and I'm sticking to it.
Agree fully with this list lol. But I agree most with something you mentioned before. I know all then words to every Eminem song from TES and before. Yet I don't really know many at all after that. Actually I know a bunch from encore as well and s tiny bit in relapse. But after that it's like nothing and I attribute it to the start and stop style.

This would've been a great tracklist.

I don't get the hate this thing is getting. I think it's fairly listenable and pretty fun at times. I really enjoyed a lot of the little throwbacks and references. Yeah it's definitely a little lame at times but I think this is decent for a big (biggest?) commercial rap star today.

Just wish Em would do more of his own hooks. I know a lot of people think it's a BB rip off but I LOVE Berzerk.

6/10.

What song do you guys think has the best hook?

I'm going for So Much Better. That shit's straight out of the Eminem Show era.

Brainless. Probably the best beat on the album too. Raw hip-hop shit.

That last verse of Bad Guy is absolutely incredible.

Yeah, honestly, the last verse of Bad Guy is so good that it's kinda disappointing that the whole album doesn't stick with the concept (of Eminem reflecting on his life in his dying moments). Now that would've been an amazing album fitting of a middle-aged Eminem, if he hadn't fallen off lyrically after The Eminem Show.

So Far is definitely my favourite hook. It's as inventive as I've wanted Em to be for almost a decade now. I think once I've dealt with a couple of the weaker tracks (sorry but I hate Headlights, think the beat on Evil Twin is My First Synth, and completely agree with everyone on Stronger Than I Was, it's embarrassing!) this will sit next to Relapse in my estimations.

MMLP == SSLP > MMLP2 == Relapse > Eminem Show > Infinite

I don't remember these "Recovery" or "Encore" albums people keep referring to.

Yeah, it's heavily implied that he liked/enjoyed Recovery but the video itself was more about "No Love" rather than a full album review. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching his videos but sometimes I feel that he'll heavily praise eminem and socially conscience rappers (Lupe) just to appeal to his audience.

Did not like this at first now I'm digging it a lot more.

Thought Brainless was the best, but it's clearly Evil Twin for me.

Love it.

Listening to the end of Bad Guy, I...actually now understand why he made this the sequel to MMLP.

Given that Evil Twin is the last song (ignoring the bonus tracks) and seemed like some form of finale of an era, where does Em go from here?

Eventually you will be singing and memorizing the songs. It usually takes me weeks until I start singing along out of no where.

Best Eminem song to sing along with is Superman though.

Anyone know if there is an uncensored version of the Rap City "freestyle" ?

SH sounded great but Em's part was terrible. Couldn't make anything out everything was censored.

Though you could tell him and Tigger get along well and had more chemistry than most of these other interviews.

BTW I caught some of the 106 park opening before the Rap City episode and holy hell what the hell happened BET? I used to watch that show for the cool freestyle segments on fridays but now it looks and feels like a completely neutered and watered down version. Not only that but they kept trying to claim they were going to do some live Em interview when it was painfully obvious that the Em interview/Rap City segment was pre-recorded. Crowd wasn't into it because they probably knew no one was coming out for real.

Looked and felt like one of those old WWE Raw episodes when one was taped and one was live.

Legacy, So Far..., Headlights, Brainless, Wicked Ways and most of all Bad Guy are the fastest ones growing on me so far.
I'm not entirely sure, but this is my rank as of now: MMLP > TES > MMLP2 > Recovery > Encore > SSLP > Relapse

(Yeah, I actually love Encore - and Relapse being the last one means little to nothing to me, I still love it, mostly thanks to Refill)
