12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

It's a nice dashboard. I didn't watch the whole lot of it, but I got a good enough idea. The kinect voice commands is not something that I would ever use; faster to just use the controller.

Exactly.

MS is trying to change the status quo of:

- Gamer turns on console
- Gamer plays
- Gamer turns off console (or they/someone else switch TV input to do something else)
- Console not turned on/used again till gamer wants to play again

into:

- Everybody and anybody looking at the TV screen is using the console, all the time that the TV is showing a picture.

Your mother and father become Xbox users. Your kids become Xbox users. YOUR DOG BECOMES AN XBOX USER.

Instead of being a separate box on a separate input that provides a drastically different experience for those who wouldn't normally use it (the One Guide for instance is quite similar to many TV guide interfaces), it just adds a tonne of other options for them around what they'd normally be able to do.

I've been saying it for over a year now on here. I get why hardcore gamers might not care about this approach for themselves, but going this route makes it so the console is always in your face. I don't get people who think what Microsoft is doing is automatically a sales disaster. If the console is in your face then the Xbox Store is in your face. It's the same reason Valve does all the crazy things they do with Steam. They just want your eyes. They win if they get your eyes.

Both systems are gonna push each other to do better in better. The experience in two years will probably be miles ahead of where the OS's are at launch. Exciting stuff.

Is this really fair? He didn't drive-by, he stated how he felt about the demonstration and presented why he felt that way. There is no fight because no war is fought for an opinion on this, you either like it or you don't.

It's netBuff. Everyone knows his angle. Show all of us where Kinect or anything else shown in this video was slow. You can't, because it's not there. It's netBuff doing what he does and it's old.

That's very well done. Looks nice and slick, no demo of snap though from what I could see. Wonder if it's still having issues as rumoured.

Pretty underwhelming to me: Everything seems to react kind of slow, especially the Kinect. And overall, the UI is pretty unpleasant to the eye and is potentially laid out in a way that doesn't seem to aid usability.

What is there to be jealous of?

...Jesus

This will sell units, even @ $499.

I would not be surprised if X1 actually outsells the PS4 because of this.

There is nothing new for the casual gamer with the PS4. everything is aimed at the hardcore gamer.

Without the voice commands please explain to me what is so good about this. The voice commands is what makes this look so intuitive. Take out the voice commands and it's really not that big of a step up imo. But luckily it does have voice commands, so it is a pretty big step up. And I'm pretty sure voice commands are quicker than using a controller. I dare you to attempt to use a controller for the kinds of switching from thing to thing in that video when you get an X1 and see if you can do it as fast as a voice command.

Hahaha ... Wow!

Indie games? There's nothing more casual than a lot of indie games.

Looks really good, let's hope it works that smooth on the retail boxes.

But at any rate, I really don't get why they've been so busy flinging crap around and making NDAs with regards to power and such instead of doing things like this. This is the sort of stuff that convinces people to see the added value of a Kinect as well as those little things like the QR scanner and such. That and the exclusives should have been the main focus the moment the 180's were done and the conversation was no longer being drowned by all the DRM stuff imo.

Packaged footage disturbed by MS, and again, not a second of snap with real gameplay. They show "snap activity feed" next to a Killer Instinct title screen and no gameplay. I think the swapping between apps looks awesome, but this doesn't resolve any of the concerns about instability with gameplay while simultaneously snapped with another app (IE, Twitter, etc.)

Seems like at least last week it was stable. That said, I thought the problem was LIVE and it makes sense since looking at the UI, Live seems to be a separate app?

Looks more or less how it looked when they first revealed the console.

If Xbone's dashboard is fast and functional on the release date then those who started rumors that it wouldn't, will they be held accountable for spreading false rumors or has GAF completely strained away from its past policies?

Really impressive.

The scary part of the whole Kinect integration is that I will get to see the faces/living rooms of many of the randoms on my 'friends list'. Do I really want to go down that rabbit hole?

Live is the network Microsoft uses for the Xbox that always is running once you sign in. Friends list, store etc. Most of what is shown in that video probably is part of Live. The rumored stuff that was broken was Party and Snap. Neither of which were shown. Though neither were a myriad of other Live game features.

Strangely the XBOX One ui looks very messy, and this is coming from someone who loves the 'Metro' style ui on his Lumia.

There doesn't seem to be a core design philosophy running throughout, elements look dropped into place and don't really tie in with each other.

If someone had linked footage of this and said it was a beta dash, I would have believed them.

Let's see what SONY can do.

You can always disable the video stream, and so can they.
I'll make sure to have video disabled by default, because my apartment is not as pretty and tidy as the one in the demo. :P

Exactly, wasn't signed in so he wasn't really running a game with a second app snapped. The rest looks awesome, I am just curious why the source of the rumored instability wouldn't be addressed at all. The KI stream would be perfect for it.

Name the ones who had spread false rumours regarding the dashboard. Quote them.

Sony has alot of catching up to do with the UI, IMO. Microsoft really has them beat with this. It looks very simple, colorful and easy to use. I like the customization options with pinning and the like.

The only thing that's really bothering me is the inconsistency of the notifications. Things like Skype, and Game DVR are rectangular but others like Achievements are rounded. They should all be rectangular and uniform. Looks much nicer that way.

I loved the Skype tracking, I don't use Skype much on my Windows 8 machine (as I don't have a camera). Does the Windows 8 app version (if you have a good enough camera) do similar? (tracking you around the room).

The recording/editing/uploading was also very nice indeed.

No, because they covered their backs by saying, 'it may be sorted for launch'. Which is apparently acceptable.

I don't believe it does. Skype on Windows 8 can bite me though. I hate that damn app.

Holy shit, that looks really good. That just makes me annoyed about how spectacularly they've dropped the ball on pretty much every other issue.

Are you calling out the mods? Because that's not really your call to decide what is acceptable and what isn't, dude

Just relax a bit and prep for KI in a couple weeks ^_^
