12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

Looks really impressive. This is clearly the best thing MS has going for them right now.
Yes, color me impressed, even jelous cause i know the PS4 Os will probably be much more simple than this. Tho if you strip down all the TV stuff it becomes less impressive, stuff that wont eork in many places outside the US.

Question, can you upload/render the game clips while playing? I think you can in the PS4 can't you?

I didn't really have any doubts that after screwing around with the 360 UI for so long that MS would screw up the X1's interface. It looks very fluid and user friendly, and (to my surprise) doesn't seem to be shoving adds down your face.

While I like the idea of notifications while I'm watching background noise TV (Sportscenter, local news, any re-run of an old TV series), I hope there is an option to turn off that notification when watching specific media. I'd hate to be in the middle of some serious Drama movie and see "ChronicReamer has invited you to Halo 7!" pop up.

9:37+ - Oh lord, you can see exactly what all of your friends have been doing and how long ago they did it? That seems a little.... invasive... I guess that's just the way "social gaming" is going. Hrmm. Bummer.

10:30+ - Aside from all the snark on GAF about "TV TV TV", I'm really interested to see how many services the TV guide feature is going to work with at launch. Hopefully it's not just big companies (Comcast, Time Warner, etc..). Although, now that I think about it, that's really no different that the guide on a DVR, and I have no idea if the Xbox can interface with a DVR to watch recorded shows. Guess that's another thing I'll probably never use.

Looks good. I'm still skeptical about the video Penello linked. That video used Titanfall, which as far as we know is always multiplayer. How can you get out and back in to a multiplayer match? what happens when you are out? You just stand there? on that video the dude was moving when he snapped back to game. So yea. For SP games this seems great.

Great looking UI, I'd really like to try that out for myself.

Insiders have really gotten under the skin of some here though, whew.

I really liked the part of the guide where, along with normal TV channels, you can have shows from apps like Hulu and Netflix.

I'm mainly getting an Xbox One for gaming, but I showed the video to my (casual-gaming) wife and she was pretty impressed/interested

The only thing that's really bothering me is the inconsistency of the notifications. Things like Skype, and Game DVR are rectangular but others like Achievements are rounded. They should all be rectangular and uniform. Looks much nicer that way.
For me I like that their is a difference between app notifications and acheivements. Means I can see what's going on from the notification without having to take my eyes away from the gaming.

Finished watching.

I don't care for voice commands or live TV, but the recording/editing of a video was really cool.

Too bad it's behind the Live paywall because, even when I get a Xbone after a price drop, I will not be subscribing to Live, so most of those features will be locked for me. :(

I've been saying it for over a year now on here. I get why hardcore gamers might not care about this approach for themselves, but going this route makes it so the console is always in your face. I don't get people who think what Microsoft is doing is automatically a sales disaster. If the console is in your face then the Xbox Store is in your face. It's the same reason Valve does all the crazy things they do with Steam. They just want your eyes. They win if they get your eyes.

I agree.
But is still a game console, you are not selling it in a vacuum, you are targeting a "gamer's market" with a box that is less focused on gaming than the competion and with higer price.

That is what for me is weird and a chance!
Their target market could be easily dried up by the more cheap gaming-focused competion due to their "open vision" and then who will buy a 500 dollars box that is also built to play videogames?

And, but it is secondary in some way, they are too focused on the home market, shrinking even more their market pool.

In that IGN video they show the snap stuff. That video is a direct feed video sent to the press I guess. It's different from the one in the OP of this thread. Any link to the direct feed cause in the IGN video they scrub around so a lot of it is not running at a normal FPS.

Live is the network Microsoft uses for the Xbox that always is running once you sign in. Friends list, store etc. Most of what is shown in that video probably is part of Live. The rumored stuff that was broken was Party and Snap. Neither of which were shown. Though neither were a myriad of other Live game features.

Er...while this demo didn't show it, I would be surprised if SNAP was in worse shape now than what these videoes show....

(note that the last one is based on an earlier build than the above two)

Like I said in another thread, MS is probably pushing through daily updates to iron out the bugs and earlier, they probably were only pushing weekly updates thus it looked like everything was in disarray. Standard crunch time for programming unfortunately.

Hope we get something from Sony...I've seen a lot more of the Xbox functionality and it ships a week later.

Great looking OS imo. Really fast and so is Windows 8.1. Sounds like consoles now have pc performance in terms of multi tasking!

Sony really needs to give an official in-depth demo like this. It wont have TV but Ill bet its just as fast with switching

That was just amazing.

Man do I love the new gamerpics they have now. Some of the artwork put into them look really nice.

It all looks good, that's for sure but it's all stuff I'm not going to use.

I'm not a Skype user so that's useless.
Saying Xbox Play Forza Motorsport 5 is a hassle if you can just press the A button to play the game.
The stuff about recording is nice and all but there's a button on the controller for that right? Why not press that instead of telling the Xbox to do it. Way faster.

Good to see they changed up the different stores though. I hate how it's done on the 360 right now.

Also, I have my doubts that all the stuff they showed (guides, TV and stuff) will work in Europe or somewhere else than the US. Most 360 apps and services weren't even available in Europe...

It's just not for me.

Yusuf learned a new word; Magical. :P

Glad you enjoyed the video - only two more weeks to go.

The people at Microsoft should have been doing this all along instead of getting involved with Tweet debates and that sort of stuff. Potential consumers like myself want to see things in action, not all the PR stuff that tends to lose the focus.

All in all this video looks great and no matter how awesome it looks and runs you will always run into overly pessimistic people on the forums, Twitter, YouTube comments and stuff like that. It's in the best interest not to put too much focus on them because that is what they want, to sidetrack any positive outlook. It's apparent Microsoft has built up some enemies over the years.

Long story short, I'm very impressed seeing it in action and I am starting to see the value in Kinect.

He is a cool guy. I like him a lot more than Spencer. No idea why. lol

He's very well spoken and seems like a down to Earth type of person I can relate to. While others who speak about the XBox (not going to name names) come across as being robotic and trying way too hard to always put a positive spin on things.

That looks amazing, wow. I'm not buying an Xbox one (unless a few years down the line, it has the games I want) but this really is just...wow. We haven't seen much of the PS4's UI but I honestly don't think it's capable of outdoing this.

I'm very impressed. This is a genuine next gen OS. However, I don't see that many people using Skype, and less and less people are watching live tv. So I think those two features have limited value amongst the core audience for the XB1.

However, the general design and look of the interface is fantastic, and I think I'll enjoy using it. I wish they would have shown more game related stuff. Show me the achievements list. Show me how the store looks.

Wow

Such features

Impress

Much speed

(glad they put this together)

The friends app seems a little disjointed, aesthetically removed from the UI. I guess it is its own app now?

I see your point regarding the friends app, although I think they put everything as separate apps so that they can update them easier than updating the system every time which could be pretty painful.

Seemed real finaly. Looking nice thou im not understanding why they use the controller in the homemenu and not gestures, maybe problems with gestures? Only thing I noticed was the part where they flip trought netflix and few other programs fast, and they dont actualy load the apps just start loading and then hit the next. Every time they change to something theres delay between whenthey change to it and when they start doing things, probaly because its still loading underneath.

Video is great, no snap mode or avatars shown though?

All the insiders here say it's broken, if it wasn't broken it would have been shown. I'm thinking one of cboats bombs is snap is not ready at launch.

That being said the UI is cool, but that's about all the Xbox One has going for it IMO.

Just finished watching that IGN video and they said that instant switching between a game and an app only works if you own the digital version. Is this true or a miscommunication? I'm going all digital so it won't matter to me, but.... I feel weird even finishing this thought. There is no way this is true. So what would happen with a disc title? The second you press the Guide button the game would say it's going to shut down? All games install anyways? Isn't the disc just in for an authorization check? Incredibly skeptical that this is true.

It was shown at the press event and no one has said anything bad about it. It's also in the direct feed video sent out today.

I saw a few people mentioning how the skype part is fake.

Im not an expert on this stuff, but I get to be in a lot of rooms with a lot of video editing and stuff for marketing materials, promotions, etc etc.

From what i can tell, its purely a switch in lighting. The shot of yusif and marc on the couch looks so much more warm (orange) just because thats how that particular shot was lit, or thats how they fixed it in post. The reason the kinect looks so much cooler (as in blue, not a more hip dude) is because there is zero post on that effect.

Idk if thats 100% right or if it clears up any confusion, but thats at least what im seeing.

Good video, I actually think the voice stuff looks cool I only recently discovered how great it is to use Bing on 360 to search all the different video apps for Movies/TV Shows, so doing that with Voice instead of typing stuff with the controller would be useful.

I don't think they should have jumped backwards and forwards between profiles so much in the video because it took me a while to figure out that the Friends app looked really out of place because it had Marks Blue accent on everything instead of green. The fact you can do that so quickly and easily is great though.

Fast resume is great too, I wonder how long those states persist for though, for example If I put my Xbox into low power mode what happens?

The UI is looking really great and while obviously I primarily use my console to game I do like the idea of having everything integrated easier so I can see my game invites/calls/etc and can quickly jump to the game or what not.
Skype is a feature I am really looking forward to also.

Snap has been shown working. I really think CBOATS bombs and all the other leaks will end up being bullshit.

This is looking really nice. I'm not sure how much of it I would actually utilise day-to-day, but they have clearly put a lot of thought into it. They should have shown something more along these lines at the announcement, it was nice that they were putting it more in context as a gamer being the primary user.

iirc all the games get installed in the hdd, so it should work

I like it, seems pretty responsive and well thinked.
But i would have enjoyed something less flat.. Those plain color tiles are a bit sad.
But thanks for the personnal pins, it's so useful !

Yep. You nailed it. That's the key difference.

Im sure if you switch to a game you dont own theres SOME sort of error message. Like if i have game X in the disc tray but try to switch to game Y which is installed but not in the tray, itll say something. I doubt itll just shut down

famousmortimer and thuway. Are you pretending it never happened?

I bolded dashboard for a reason. Wasn't obvious enough, apparently.

XBL-related features ( mort) and snap (thuway) =/= dashboard.

Call them out on the stuff they've said, but not stuff they didn't.

Looks very impressive. I'm going to be showing this thing to my whole family when we get together for Thanksgiving.
