Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

wow, this is indeed a game changer. holy hell, this is going to fuck all retailers instantly in the ass.

this was more or less the death sentence for all retailers out there, who sell videogames.

it wont be profitable for them at all to sell them anymore.

we had a serious problem of game shop dying here in europe, this means there wont be nothing more left but gamestops, and thats just the worst shop existing on earth.

i stopped buying retail(retail shopping, but i still have retail copies) but i still like going to retail-shops just to browse the windows or the covers of games... now will also fade... oh, what has the world become...

Yeah that's cool. My real question is whether or not fake addresses and overseas Paypal/credit card accounts will work with this. From what someone posted in the thread, the billing address of the cards has to be US based which suggests that its pretty muchr region locked.
If it's the same as for pc/steam titles what I would assume you can use any fake adresse, I preferably use the google headquarters.

Sorry but why is this a massive big deal? Microsoft have had their marketplace on the internet for years.

I may be missing something...

The difference is this isn't Sony, this is Amazon selling PSN codes. As such you can expect some pretty crazy deals at some stage just like they beat Steam.

It also makes it super easy for people to buy US PSN codes. I'm not going to test because of the amount, but I'm pretty sure I can buy a code for Disgaea D2 for $49 with my fake US address (that I have used for years). That is a heck of a lot better than $70

It's "Kotaku Deals" so I presume it's a paid ad. Kinda like those shitty things in magazines that are made to look like real articles.

The URL when going to the storefront from Kotaku seems to suggest they may get referral money if you buy something.

Ideally, this would launch in Japan, and they'd skip the whole "needing a Japanese credit card and billing address to buy stuff there" thing so those of us who actually want to play JP games on JP launch don't need to jump through hoops and pay through noses.

However, they won't, so this doesn't really affect me. Unless this launches in the UK and there's crazy deals.

Wow, this is grandiose news - just the kind of evolution of digital store offerings I want. It seems like greatness truly awaits!

I hope this comes to the UK !

I know i can login & buy stuff from Amazon USA with my username & password & all my info address, CC info etc is already in there, so the Amazon account system works on ll of their sites, i have ordered from the French & German Amazon sites to.

Another reason to get a PS4 for me i think.

Lol, The Last of Us is still $60 on psn? I could've sworn I saw the game discount itself to like $40 several times over the last 2 months or so.

If this is Amazon being able to independently set prices and deals for digital content on PSN then it's fantastic news, roll his sucker out Amazon/Sony.

Wait, so Amazon aren't the ones selling XBL codes through their XBL store?

I guess that explains the lack of deals...

Can I redeem the codes of games on the EU PSN? I already have a US account on amazon with US address and everything.

The line between game jurnalizm and marketing becoming even more blurry? Or am I getting it wrong?

Every weekday the Commerce Team brings you Gizmodo Deals, Kotaku Deals, and Lifehacker Deals, the very best coverage of deals on consumer technology, video games, apps, and everything else you care about. When you buy, we also make money. We want your feedback.

They're upfront about it so I don't see where the issue is.

Physical PS4 games seems to be around $60 on Amazon
Assuming the digital versions will be the same that equates to €45 (at the moment)

Looks like I'll be going digital on PS4 more than I expected

This is insane if true. I really don't believe it. I mean, there's no reason to, right? But it's a great move for pushing the digital future.

Well have other places not sold download codes before in the US? I know GAME here in the UK do it for Nintendo stuff, fairly certain they do it for Xbox Live and PSN.

HOLY CRAP. OK, so, now I can buy stuff from there and redeem the codes on my devices instead of having to purchase codes to add funds to my US account? OH BOY. If so, this is fantastic. It solves all my issues of having to deal with adding funds since I'm not from the US ;_;

Edit: Though on reading, maybe it's because of deals, but still, I stand by my "hmm"

Not just deals, but a competing marketplace. Theres little to drive down digital prices which on consoles have remained stagnent, but a competing store would sure help.

Actually, there was a time where you could buy XBLA games directly off Amazon. They even had a few prices that were different from LIVE, and offered a few sales in their short life.

One account: http://www.platformnation.com/2009/04/14/amazoncoms-xbla-games-on-sale/

They even did a "Buy 1 copy of the game, get a code to gift free" deal one day: http://www.destructoid.com/buy-one-xbla-game-and-get-one-free-on-amazon-today-136316.phtml

Hopefully, this Sony variant turns out a lot better. I'd love to see bundle pack sales on old content (Like all of "X" Publisher's PS Classics on sale for cheap), as that's one thing the console manufacturers themselves seem to do pretty poorly...

Huh, so why did they stop? Pretty stupid decision to stop...

Because the post is already buried. And this is how you go digital. With competition. Though, we need more details. And how this deal came to be, anyway.

If it's what I imagine it to be, an open store with pricing decided by amazon/publishers it's one of the most exciting things to come out of the next gen so far.

My only problem with it is I stay in the UK.

Codes for games if you want to be picky, not "PSN Codes".

It means they can bundle or discount or do whatever to individual titles.

Buying PSN dollars on special is all well and good, but if the game prices are still stupid it doesn't help a lot.

I don't see any reason why this shouldn't come to other regions. I mean both companies involved are international giants.

But you never know with PSN stuff :p

There was a good while where MS didn't seem to know what they were doing with digital content. I think Sony's introduction of Day 1 digital and PS+ kind of threw them, as it put Games on Demand to shame a bit, and they seem to only just have a good grasp on their plan now going into the XB1 launch.

It probably fell by the wayside during that time.
