Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

The thing is that you couldn't buy console-games digitally from any other retailer before, Microsoft and Sony essentially have had a monopoly on their digital sales (and prices) until now. This gives some much-needed competition.

In a best-case scenario, this will indeed result in console-gamers getting similar deals to what PC-gamers are used to, which makes going all-digital next-gen WAY more attractive. This is essentially how Microsoft should've approached their vision for a digital future, instead of forcing it upon people.

tl;dr: PSN turns into Steam, which is a good thing.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. PSN has been on Amazon before and it didn't improve sales. But Amazon has made huge pushes into digital gaming lately thanks to Tony so hopefully that will change things.

Wow, even if Sony drops the ball for digital marketplace pricing (ie sales or prices reflective of retail), amazon can now pick up the ball. Really good news.

Please come to the UK. Please. Current digital prices for "AAA" games are ridiculous, hopefully Amazon will reduce them a bit.

See previous page. You can buy codes for the games from this US Amazon store. Just use a US shipping address but your UK credit card.

A random price comparison. Sony PSN on left, Amazon PSN on right:

It's happening?!

Holy crap, this might actually deliver. Any more comparisons?

Oh snap. Thats awesome.

what i do is i have two shipping addresses saved in my amazon address book.

one for legit purchases that need to be shipped to my home.

and another with a US address (actually a friend of mine's real US home address that i borrow) just for digital PSN code stuff.

whenever i checkout to buy digital PSN stuff, i just select the US address and the order goes through. it will not go through if i have my real home address (international) selected.

this has worked for me in the past whenever i want to buy PSN money cards.

"customers who participate in the limited time buy two get one free promotion starting at noon ET today (Tuesday) will also get a bonus $5 PSN credit."

I don't suppose the B2G1 promotion applies to PSN codes as well? :(

So, this deal will ensure quicker downloads of digital games because they are downloading from Amazon's servers? The digital downloads would no longer be limited by PSN I assume.

Nope, you receive codes from Amazon, redeem it on SEN and download from Sony's own servers.

Will the codes work on the US store? AFAIK PS Plus codes don't work, you have to buy PSN credit and subscribe through that way.

Edit: nvm, read the last page.

This won't be only Amazon. This is a bit from an interview a Dutch magazine (Entertainment Business) had with the managing director of SCEBenelux;
Playstation 4 bevat ook streaming-mogelijkheden. Moet retail zich zorgen maken?
... "De online business is op dit moment additioneel. Retail profiteert daar overigens ook van. Ik noem de PS-kaarten, geld dat te besteden is op Playstation Network en abonnementen op de PS Plus-diensten. Daarnaast zijn er gesprekken met een aantal retailers om het online Playstion-aanbod beschikbaar te maken op de winkelvloer." ... "De Benelux heeft de perfecte retailers en de structuur om dat uit te rollen."
Rough translation;
Playstation 4 also has streaming-capabilities. Should retail be concerned?
... "The online business is additional at the moment. Retail also profits from it; think of PS-cards, money that can be spent on PSN and PS+ subscriptions. Beyond that, we're in talks with a number of retailers to bring the online Playstation-offerings to retail." ... "The Benelux has the perfect retailers and the structure to roll it out."
Didn't really think much of it when I read it a while back, but it seems that this is what he was talking about.

:O So basically the same trick as for buying Steam games off Amazon? And then I'd just activate the code on a US account (on PS4) and then log in to my UK account and be able to play it, I assume?

I know this is how it worked on PS3, may wait for confirmation it works this way on PS4 before I buy anything, but this is great news.

Thanks for the heads up!

Wut? Is this real life? Sony allowing competition on their consoles?

I mean, it's amazing for us and all but this doesn't make sense business wise.
Sony had to make this move to stimulate digital sales, without competition we'd be stuck with the same MSRP/RRP titles probably selling fuck all. £59.99 for FUSE digitally in the UK. I can get a PS3 digital code from Amazon for £16.55 before bank charges.

Retailers would crucify them for being competitive. This side steps the issue.

Could be cool if they have huge sales. Otherwise, can I sell my games? Is there still DRM? I'm guessing no and yes respectively

To be fair, I don't see any ps4 titles on here yet. That would be awesome if they showed up in time for launch and were eligible though.

Wow. That's great to wake up to.
Seriously. The part that scared me most about an all digital future was MS and Sony having a stranglehold on their digital prices store. I bought digital games on Steam because the price got low enough during sales that reselling a game became a moot point. Hopefully, those same Amazon sales we see on PC games (Steam codes) we will see on PSN codes. Of course, we don't know the details of whatever deal was cut. Maybe Amazon can't change the price of a game without Sony's approval.

This bodes well for a digital future at least.

It does. Sony wants you to purchase non-tradeable digital download games. Makes the publishers happy. The ones upset are the retail stores but they will just have to make deals of their own. The more the merrier. I'm sure MS will do the same if they know whats good for them. It's the only way to drive down prices on digital games.

Been there, done that: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376313

Yes, it had the occasional sale: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376883

But closed after 2 years... http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=449088

Hopefully this time it will last longer.
People have short memories. But one thing Amazon has now that it didn't before is Tony. So let's put our hopes on him. Assuming of course that this PSN digital store is under his purview. If it isn't then that's a shame.

This is so great, please bring this to Europe. I never buy stuff on PSN because after the security breach I don't trust Sony with my data. So not only does this give me a place that I actually trust to buy PSN stuff, it (hopefully) also gives Sony's insanely overpriced store some competition when it comes to prices.

I don't understand. The only place to get a digital version is from the PS store. Why would they allow another website to sell all those digital games cheaper?

That doesn't make sense. Amazon sells retail games on the cheap all the time. The reason this deal went down is because Amazon does not have any retail stores whatsoever. It doesn't effect their bottom line. Sony and publishers want the consumers to buy digital as to avoid used game sales.

So Sony may start to have PC level sales? :o sweet!

Now imagine if Sony somehow struck a deal with Valve/Steam... O__O

Their PS+ deals have already been near PC level for a while now, sometimes better. For example they're having CoJ Gunslinger for around $3.50 this week whereas on Steam you had to buy it with FC3 Blood Dragon for $12 last week.

I heard many people said that the reason why digital price on psn store can't get frequent sales is because retailer will be pissed at Sony. maybe this way Sony can deflect the blame and say blame amazon instead?

I mean, I'm sure Sony still got a percentage of the money even if the game is bought from amazon?

Some others I spotted, Sony PSN prices first, Amazon PSN second - some goood discounts on sports games:

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel $29.99 $26.24

Batman: Arkham Origins $59.99 $56.02

Deadpool $49.99 $39.49

The Last of Us $59.99 $58.76

Madden NFL 25 $59.99 $46.22

MLB 13 The Show $39.99 $29.96

Everything is at least the same price. Some games have token discounts (like 4 cents). Some have larger ones.

I'm just trying to look for the downside. I have no idea what it could be. There always is one.

Because the consumer can't sell the purchased copy. This is a way of killing the used games market, something mostly everyone can live with if it follows the PC model laid out by Steam. We will need more than just Amazon to drive down the prices as low as we see on GMG, etc. But it's a start.

It's not really the same comparison as your not having to pay steam a monthly subscription to get access to their steam sales.

PreOrder on Amazon > start download through PSN website at midnight on release > begin playing ~ at midnight on release day.

The lack of competition was the one thing holding back the idea of a completely digital console, and with this, I think I may jump on board*.

*Well, if the prices are good.

Yes, their Plus deals are pretty damn good. The downside is that in order to achieve that, most of the times the regular deals are very underwhelming. I hope Amazon can offer at least a mid tier

This seems way more serious though, especially if we take into account that buying retail-games digitally is becoming the norm. That was more of a convenience thing if I remember correctly, stores selling vouchers for digital games isn't anything new at all.

Anyway. let me rephrase; this has the potential to be huge and the potential to 'turn PSN into Steam'. ;)

YES! Lock it up. Other deals in place (ex-Gamestop, Best Buy, etc). Steam sales a given. Ahh based Sony!
