Jesus, chill, guys.
Considering that announcement was mentioned in a recent PS blog interview, there's little reason to believe it won't come to a Playstation console. Exclusivity is anyone's guess at this point though.

Oh it was? Do you have a link? Would love to read it.

Sure, but that doesn't invalidate my point.

Anyway, I would be pretty shocked (and disappointed) if Persona 5 is a next gen exclusive. It would be The Last Guardian all over again :/ Don't do this to me, Atlus.

Definitely can't see it being a next gen exclusive. Especially with it (hopefully) announcing before PS4s will even be available in Japan. The only platform i'm "sure" about is PS3, going by my gut.

I wouldn't, seeing as the Vita version of Persona 4 has outsold every SMT title that's been released on 3DS to date.

Moot point though, it'll be on PS3. Xbox 360 also perhaps. If there's a Vita version it'll be later.
Persona 4 Golden outselling Shin Megami Tensei IV (and also Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor Overclocked) isn't really surprising. The Persona sub-series is way more popular than the main series (and any other spin off, for that matter). Also, I have no doubts Persona 4 Golden would have sold way more if it was released for the 3DS instead of Vita.

I wouldn't be so sure I'd say that the numbers would be close. Persona games were always on Sony platforms it would be like Tales series which are selling the best on Sony platforms.

I do think Sony is going to have one big game for Japan next year for people to purchase a next-gen system. It maybe Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, or Persona.

Persona is not that big in japan especially compared to the other 2 franchises you listed...

The pressure must be insane for them, P3&4 have achieved such a cult status over the years, everything from the characters to the music has become iconic among fans. God damn I have so many questions floating around in my mind, I can't believe we still don't know a single thing about this game.

I doubt it will be on the Vita. At most it might come down years in the future, but I am pretty sure we won't see a vita version announced.

But it wouldn't make sense, why release P4G on the Vita, and not release the sequel on the same platform, might as well just give them all the middle finger to new audience who played the game on Vita. Although i can't for people who have been waiting since the PS2 release...

Yes but you also had Strange Journey on regular DS and Soul Hackers on 3DS, SMT IV was also on 3DS because of budget reasons, 3DS made sense for that game. P5 however is getting a big budget(in comparison to other Atlus games) and the guy directing the game(Hashino) isn't going to go 3DS after doing Catherine. I mean this is the guy who bitched about the cut backs in P3P. Catherine is also their best selling game in years(looking at all of the Atlus games released over the past 13 years or so I can't see anything that might have outsold it WW), it's also a PS3/360 game. Catherine was a puzzle game with social sim elements(talk about niche :lol) and it did 500k(iirc) but here's the catch....... half of that was sold in the west. If that did 500k, imagine what a persona game on a hd console can do. P4 on PS2 in 2008 did like 150k in a month didn't it? What I'm trying to say is that Persona is popular in the west, not ultra popular but popular enough where you take the west into consideration when you make your game. Vita is flopping and anything that's not a nintendo game isn't doing any significant numbers on 3DS in the west which is why I don't think you will see a mainline persona game debut on a handheld. PS4 has a better chance than 3DS.

:lol sure it would have and P4G on PS3 and PS4(in the west) would have outsold a 3DS version, so what's your point?

I dunno. The 3DS userbase is massive compared to the Vita's and the DS line is known for being a good home for jRPGs.

Anyway, the "which platform" subject is so tiring. Lets talk about something else Persona 5-related pls.

Like... I hope there is a female protagonist from the beginning this time. I absolutely loved playing as 'Hamuko' in P3P.

I'd be all for this.

As long as they get away from the cliche anime bullshit that plagued 4 and parts of 3.

College students with actual part time jobs this time around?

A return to the creepy as fuck aura that surrounded these games?

Atlus pls

userbase doesn't mean everything, if it did core wii titles like CoD would have outsold the PS3/360 versions. If it userbase meant everything, there would be no PS3/Vita games that aren't on 3DS in Japan(3DS has already outsold PS3 in japan iirc), if userbase was important, everything would be mobile :lol.

Sure, there is the thread about it.

I don't think the Persona producer would say on the PS blog "fans will be happy" about the announcement if it wasn't releasing on a PS console. That would be akin to teasing a PS game in a Nintendo Direct.

At the very least, one of these announcements is PS related.

Wait, really? That is good. Do you have a source for that?

Logic and common sense tells me that, them building their own engine and starting from scratch and Mods hinting at PS4 lets me know that this is going to be a big boy title in comparison to the other things that Atlus has been doing since Nocturne. I could be wrong though but i DOUBT IT.

I'm hoping it's cross-gen. I don't really mind what system it's on (quite frankly, the more people who can play Persona 5 regardless of their platform choice, the better), so long as it's on a region free console so I can import it into Europe.

By that logic I hope I can play it on either my PS3, PS4 or Vita (my preference being PS4>Vita>PS3), but I don't have some fanboy fuelled hope that it's exclusive to a platform because I have some attachment to it, and quite frankly I question the sanity of anyone who does hope for that. If Nintendo went region free I'd be pretty down with it on their systems too.

Most likely gonna be ps3/ps4 with vita remote play just like yakuza. You are setting yourself up for disappointment if u expect other platforms.

The game wouldn't be in the launch window anyway. Just announce it. Build the hype. Then after a year or two of the launch, release it and profit as 10-30m console owners buy your game.

It's tiring, but only when someone fiercely argues how the game is going to be on 3DS and someone else uses logic and history to point out just what a wishful, silly notion that is.

A female MC would be great.

Don't hope for that. Really, don't do that to yourself.

Still, yeah, P5 having a similar atmosphere (aka aura) and characters as Persona 2 would be good. That + gameplay, music and dungeon design as good as in Persona 4 = Yes please.

Oh, I thought it was some sort of official statement.

This is very annoying and have you seen those P3P sales? Man I don't see Atlus coming out with a handheld version initially when:

Persona 3 Atlus 210,319

Persona 3 Fes Atlus 165,471

Persona 3 Portable Atlus 208,877

if you include digital sales, P3P outsold the original, which is just crazy.

lol
You mean when PS Blog asked them about the announcement?

By this logic, if a Nintendo website had asked the same question either:
A) Hashino would have answered that fans won't be happy with the announcement or
B) Hashino would still have said fans would be happy and it would be confirmed on a Nintendo platform

You see how that makes no sense?

Oh, to throw my own two cents into the speculation for platform:

3DS: Very possible. The 3DS has been good to Atlus - SMT IV broke a quarter-million on it in Japan alone, both recent Etrian titles broke six figures, and for a remake, Soul Hackers did very well (didn't break 100k, but came within sneezing distance of doing so). Every single one of the titles they've released on the system has clearly made a profit and been well-received. And they have a 3D engine in place thanks to SMT IV - this could easily serve as a foundation for other titles in the way that the Nocturne engine provided the building blocks for a number of PS2 titles. And the 3DS is the fastest-selling game machine in Japan at the moment, and while it may not be on track to beat the DS, it will do at least as well as the GBA, if not better. While there may be an argument that the Persona titles have "always" lived on set-top consoles first and foremost, that could also be said for main-line SMT once upon a time, yet here we are. I would not be surprised at the announcement of P5 as a 3DS exclusive in the slightest.

PS3: The obvious choice. The Persona team's made a game on the hardware so the tools and pipeline infrastructure is there, they have experience with the platform, and they have a proven market of core gamers on both sides of the Pacific. The only thing that makes me hesitant to say this is a sure thing is that the PS3 is much more stagnant a console than the PS2 was, especially in Japan; with SMT IV going to the 3DS in particular, it no longer feels like a safe bet that P5 will be going to the PS3 as a matter of course.

PS4: Possible, but unlikely. The thing that makes this really unlikely is actually the fact that Atlus has traditionally waited some time before making generational transitions; remember that one of the reasons Persona 4 garnered so much attention was due to the fact that it was a PS2 game in the second half of the Year Of Our Lord Jesus H. Christ Two Thousand And Eight. Even first releases tend to be delayed; Nocturne didn't come out until the PS2 was three years old, the PS3 was five when Catherine hit, and even Etrian IV came out nearly two years after the release of the 3DS. I find it unlikely that Atlus would jump into the new generation so quickly, even with the financial assets of Sega now backing them up. It certainly remains a possibility, though.

360/Bone: To the idea of exclusivity I say merely: lawl. There is no way Atlus would create an exclusive for such a dead (or stillborn, in the Bone's case) platform, even if Microsoft threw mountains of money at them. They would not risk alienating their domestic playerbase to that degree. Catherine did come to the 360, so if the game goes to the PS3, it may see a 360 port for the overseas market; if it's PS4, a Bone port is a possibility due to the architectures being so similar. I find the idea of an exclusive impossible, however. Even if Microsoft offered to write a blank check with no questions asked for its development, it simply makes no economic sense for their domestic market.

TLDR: I expect an announcement primarily for the PS3, though I would not be at all surprised at a 3DS announcement. Anything else would raise some eyebrows.

I feel so conflicted for wanting P5 to have no relation whatsoever to P4, yet I'd love to have (an older) Nanako in the game
as a playable character
.
Every version of Persona has been anime cliches, don't kid yourself man.
B-but the anime cliches in the older games were better!
Which game is that male VR assistant from? Persona 1 or 2?
Persona 3 Portable. He is the assistant if you play as Hamuko/FeMC.

It's about which anime cliches you prefer, didn't P3 have some evangelion shit going on? I want that back.

And I would like P2EP back by let's face it, they change the tone every game, who is to say they won't change it again now? Well, maybe they enjoyed P4's success, but who knows?

It's tiring, but only when someone fiercely argues how the game is going to be on 3DS and someone else uses logic and history to point out just what a wishful, silly notion that is.

Yeah, that's only slightly better than my favorite opposite argument of:

Persona 5 will be Sony exclusive. I know this because every Persona game is Sony exclusive*

*
Except the most recent Persona game, which is multiplatform.**
**
multiplatform, like all of Atlus' console games this gen***
***
except their Wii games

Not that I'm saying it's going to be 3DS exclusive or even on 3DS. But there's a lack of understanding all around when it comes to history and logic.

lol

I'm going to make the absolutely incredible assumption that whoever is editorializing on the JP PS blog has a pretty good idea about how it's going to turn out and wouldn't have asked/published the question if it could come back to bite them in the ass a month later.

So yeah, if an official Nintendo site had interviewed the guy and had mentioned the countdown, I'd read it the same way: "at least one announcement is about a Nintendo system".

I like how you jump down on my statement "making no sense" while being absolutely unfazed by the rest of the fiction going on in the thread. Speaks volumes.

Atlus pls

Not happening. Its a Japanese game, Anime and its tropes are a part of Japanese culture. Game would have to be developed in Romania or something to get away from it lol.

But I would like to them to do something surprising with it.
