The "Nike smile" is a traditional Sonic thing. Look up some of his Adventure artwork or Heroes renders.

The 3DS version will probably have it eventually, the smaller touches on that version don't seem to pop up immediately.

It only looked good in the drawn art, but in renders it looks so bad (especially in Heroes and Smash Bros 4's CG render art).
