Well, it hasn't really been a very long time. 4 or 5 units that worked at first that no longer work is more troubling to me than 4 or 5 units that didn't work from the beginning.
Way too early to say one way or the other, but I don't see any sense in brushing away someone's concern over the perceived issue. No reason for anyone to be alarmist yet, either.
But it's not like Sony has had a pristine track record for consoles either. I had a PS1 I had to flip over to play it and it eventually stopped working. Had a PS2 with disc read errors after a year. Had 2 OG 60GB PS3s die on me. I had 3 RROD errors on my 360 in the first year, a year where I pretty much only played XBLA games.
Had a second version of the PS1 that never went bad. My Slim PS2 and Slim PS3 both work great. My Elite 360 is loud as hell, but it's been working since I decided to go with that instead (I gave my other 360 that I had returned multiple times to my brother; he ended up getting another RROD a couple years later)
Like this thread, like each of our own situations, this is all anecdotal. I'm getting my launch PS4 Friday regardless. But man, console launches sure do suck sometimes. Good luck OP. Really hope this is all just a rare thing and the inevitable megathreads for PS4 / XB1 console failures sees relatively little activity.
How high do you think the failure rate is?
This is easily just one persons single issue. Until we have more in the wild, you cant make a judgement based off one persons experience.
Having said that, I think MS is going to work extra hard to make sure that the hardware doesnt fail like it did for the 360. They lost an astronomical amount of money on the RROD debacle. Hopefully someone there had the foresight to make sure that the XB1 does not have similar issues... but I wouldnt bet on it.

Considering we have 4 reported faulty consoles from what I assume are only a few thousand out in the wild, I think that's a pretty bad rate. Especially when you consider that if there are 4 consumers internet savvy enough to go to GAF or Reddit, there is a whole lot more who aren't. There are surely more defects out there that we haven't heard about.

That's pretty much what happened, yeah. Sony rep went through some troubleshooting with him, and nothing seemed to work.

When I get my PS4 on Friday, I might wait on the firmware update until I find out whether it is bricking consoles or not.

I get that he won the item and can't do much apart from what Sony offer. But a repair on an item that is just out of the box isn't good service, no matter what the product is.
It hasn't put me off getting a PS4 though, no product will have a 100% record.
I remember reading threads like this waiting for my Every10minutes Mountain Dew 360 to arrive. I got a warranty a couple days later for it from M$.

My PS3 died on launch day. Sony was quick to replace (2 day turnaround) and it has been alive and kicking for 7 years.
These things happen. There are bound to be a few defective units in every batch. While it definitely takes the excitement out of getting something new the important thing is that Sony is quick to replace the unit and get you back in the game.

If people can just remember that this is a new HW launch in 2013 with social media and GAF in sensitive mode then your expectations should be tempered.
Nothing in dev regarding consoles or controllers has come up. Don't expect a 0.00000000000 failure rate. Get some common sense and rationality here instead of the drive by trolling and passive aggressive defending and attacking of the situation.

Same, no one tried to sell it. When I asked them they said they won't know until they ring it up. Guess the warranty isn't in their system yet. I'm hoping it's like $40 or $50, but it wouldn't shock me if it it's $60.

If it helps any, at least 12 of those Taco Bell PS4s are on Ebay at the moment.

Seriously though, there's no way to accurate gauge things at this stage. Hopefully someone (read: media) will keep track of the models/serials to see if there might be a defective batch or some other common theme.

More like the entire day. Been a rough day for Sony overall. Probably the worst day for them since ps4 was announced.
I did get to try ps4 at best buy today though and the controller is indeed fantastic.
I don't think there are enough to even put a dent in it.

Normally it would work that way but he got it in the Taco Bell giveaway. So I doubt he can just return it to his local Taco Bell.
For anyone wondering the warranty straight from sony is 49$ (no accidental) 59$ (accidental). And it covers it for two years, after your 1 year from factory expires. So three years total.
And I'm not a warranty guy at all, all my apple products don't have apple care/+, nor my flat screens. But this left a bad taste in my mouth.

And I also read the same sentence in Wii, PS3, GC, WiiU, PS2 etc. threads when people were overreacting for nothing. Sorry to say but "sinking feeling" is a terrible argument.

Not liking the crashing/bricking hopefully thats not a larger problem (360 launch memories flooding in). The PS4 wobble is not an issue, judging by where the rubber feet are it would do that. Also even as flat as some surfaces appear they are not, my all my PS3's (fat and slims) and 360 and Wii all wobble depending on what I put them on, move it over a few inches and they don't.

So we have two, maybe three confirmed reports of problems. I'm assuming more than these two people got their Taco4's already. Most likely not "every" system, and way too early to tell how widespread the issues is.
Now, the techie in me would like to ask two questions of the OP:
1) Did, at any point in the calls to Sony, they mention specifically what the pulsing blue light represents? It's obviously an error condition of some kind, and I would very much like to know what it is.
2) Did you install the update before using the system, or did you fiddle with the menus and stuff and then update? Did the update come down from the internet, or loaded from USB? The reason I ask is that the tweet yesterday referring to the USB load "instructions" seemed to indicate going into Safe Mode and loading the update before performing any other actions, which I took as "don't even boot the system once without loading the update". Maybe this is what happens if 1.0 runs for a little bit before 1.5 is installed? I don't even plan on connecting my system to the network until after the update is installed.

Well I hope this is rare thing and failure rates are low this Gen. I don't want another Gen like last one where consoles dying was commonplace. Sucks for everyone.

who's arguing? I'm just saying it's worrying to start hearing these things before the thing is even officially out when you have one pre-ordered.
Also, good luck exchanging a new console at it's launch. People with defective units are going to have some painful waiting time to go through.
