Hmmm, is this the same guy whos system busted when it was updating?

Sounds like something during the update collapsed and it corrupted the system config files. Taking the HDD out forced the system to do a full reset on the HDD which allowed safe mode, and then in that mode it reverted the system files back to their original settings. Undoing whatever the corruption caused during the update.

That is all I can think of for that sort of a fix to work.

Erm, removing your hard drive is not standard procedure to get into safe mode.

It was a long shot to be honest, something finicky was going on with the hard drive until the firmware could be triggered to go into safe mode. It will need to be fixed.

It is pretty standard if the hard drive or memory the device is trying to read from was somehow corrupted. In this case, an aborted download/install. How do you think you fix a corrupted Windows install/boot? A bricked smartphone?

This is still a software problem that needs fixing, it required the system to get a hardware fault before it fixed itself, which is really bad. The hardware itself was fine but he couldn't get into safe mode without 'hurting' the hardware, effectively.

Yes. to be honest this soooooooo disappointing for me. Nothing has changed on the software side from the PS3, its the same backwards approach to updating a console.
