Most likely Toad; he's been around since the beginning, but his number of playable appearances has skyrocketed in recent years.

Oh definitely agreed with you there. Only time I'd consider an alt as a "different" character is when it's the same character to begin with (Dr. Mario, alt-gen Trainer).

About Toad, I really don't think he will be playable in Smash as long Sakurai is still breathing. While a lot of people want him, a few other people (like me) thinks he's too generic and not actually a character but a species, and thus not relevant enough for Smash. I think Sakurai is one of the latter people, Toad's too generic and doesn't feel like one specific character.
I think alts are a creative way to give us more characters without having to implement too many similar additions. We still have to wait and see how they are going to be incorporated but I feel we will get a formal announcement when the time comes.

It's agonizing that we're still waiting for obvious inclusions like Zelda, Yoshi, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Ness and Wario. Damn you Sakurai!
Edit- as far as alts go, I'm fairly satisfied with certain color swaps like Capt. falcon -> Blood Falcon and Peach -> Daisy. The characters look similarly enough that a color swap is satisfactory for me.

I don't want Toad mainly because I can't help but see him as a useless wimp. Lol, I immediately see him running around "OH NO! HELP ME! AHHHH!" in that high pitched voice.
I'm okay with it, I just prefer alts being the literal alternates for the character you're playing. Other characters have the potential to be...well...other characters entirely, so I feel like it's wasted potential to use them as a skin for someone else.
Mario is human I think.

While I'd love to see newcomers, especially lil mac, palutena, and shulk which all 3 I personally think have a relatively high chance of getting in as playable characters, what I'm most excited to see is updated designs of vets, or even just seeing them in HD, I was really waiting to see what Marth would look like in HD, and sakurai delivered on it, now im really wanting to see what captain falcon, zelda and pokemon trainer would look like. And really, I just want to see all of them in HD, for a few of them, this might be their only appearance in HD aswell, its also sorta great that the very first lord in the fire emblem to grace a HD nintendo console is the one and only Marth.
Well, this game will probably have both Donkey Kong and Diddy kong, so makes perfect sense

You gotta take both Wario Land and Wario Ware into account, though, fella's no "Mario" character anymore than DK is nowadays. Heck, Diddy, Dixie, Funky and K. Rool have appeared in Mario sports' games, whereas the likes of Mona, Ashley, 9-Volt and such remain Ware exclusive.

The male wiifit trainer could have easily have been a new character with another type of "wiifit" focused moveset but as far as we know he will simply be an alt and that is totally fine.
An example we have been using a lot is Lucina but what are the odds of getting Marth, Chrom, Ike, and Lucina? Especially if they share a similar style. lol. I would take her as an alt over her not being a playable character any day.

Honestly, I think his modern design is fine, but his CG artwork for half of the games are terrible.
His Smash 4 model is alright though, just has some weird oddities I don't like, but he isn't terrible looking... except for his CG artwork on the site. omg that freaking CG artwork is one of the worst renders
