Played some Japanese demos for a few days, here are some mini-impressions for anyone who is interested:
Toukiden: The Age of Demons
I didn't spend a lot of time with this one for the reason of playing it extensively on the PSP. It was very easy to notice that it looks gorgeous on the vita. It looks so much better, it's crazy. It looks like it's native res. The controls are obviously better too. This is a quality game that is not to be missed out on once it's released over here.
Sorcery Saga
You know, that cooking dungeon crawler that is going to be released by NISA. The demo was meaty and gives a good representation of the gameplay. You're mostly in dungeons, I didn't get to go to a town or go to shops, but those will be in the game. The graphics looked native res. It might not be the best looking game but I find it appealing and impressive enough whenever a game is native res.
The gameplay reminds me of Pokemon Dungeon games only with a twist, you have a cute animal/monster that follows you all the time. You feed the animal anything from your item list and you don't know what to expect. Sometimes you heal him or hurt him. It's also the only way he levels up and heals. He gains a skill that helps you combine your items to make them stronger, such as sword plus 5 HP. You can't control his actions, the AI can be stupid sometimes, so you need to keep that in mind. The main character that you control (forgot names), uses magic and skills, she levels up normally and you can equip her a weapon and a shield. You also use items to heal yourself. You can cook in the game randomly or you can look through the recipes you own. If your cooking was not succesful, you can get poison when eating it. I haven't tried it out much, so not sure what else you can get out of cooking.
The game seems like a light RPG, there aren't many stats and you can only equip a sword and a shield. I'm not sure wether you learn magic/skills or wether you buy them, because they seem to have a couple of uses instead of having an MP bar. Not sure how you restore them.
In dungeons, the maps are auto-mapped whenever you move, they're always displayed so you never get lost. Fights seem to be a mix of real time and turn based, you move in real time but the monsters only move when you move. So it's like you're using turns, you can plan your attacks and kill monsters before they come closer to you. It seemed interesting.
The story seemed silly, but the good type. The one that doesn't take itself or its characters seriously. The characters were very charming and funny. The main character is trying to find legendary recipes to help a restaurant. She finds an old book she can't decipher. A suspicious lady suddenly appears out of nowhere, she helped the main character by reading the book for her. This is one of those games with great voice acting in Japanese, and very fitting. I doubt the English version will be as convincing, hopefully we'll have dual audio.
The game seemed good, but it's not a game for everyone. Some people will love it, others could easily hate it. I seem to be drawn to the game and will probably get it.
Hatsune Miku Project Diva f
Having already played the PS3 version of the demo, this was more for comparison sake. The game felt off on the PS3, it had different timing and you could easily mess things up when you're used to the PSP Hatsune Miku games. The vita version was like the PSP versions, none of that weird timing. It was a joy to play. The PS3 version looks better of course, but the vita version is great looking too. It's also more fitting on handhelds. I'd have imported the game eventually, but I'm so glad we're getting the game over here.
God Eater 2
Already played the PSP version, but I wanted to see how the vita version compares and wanted to give the game a second chance. It was expected that the game would look and control better, but I didn't expect it to influence my enjoyment this dramatically. I still think the story and characters suck, but I might get tempted for the gameplay.
Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki
Stopped playing the demo after 20-30 minutes of nothing but dialogue. No, I didn't stop because it was bad, but because it was good and spoiling things! It's one of those games that I didn't really need to try out. I already know what to expect of the series and I've tried demos of other Legend of Heroes games. This one was a port (remake?) of a PSP game, so it was for comparison sake mostly, but I got carried away. The game is great at fleshing its characters out and letting you know a lot about the town the main character is visiting. It's crazy how you got to know smaller details about the town in a span of 3 years and how it was brought up naturally. Sigh...I wanna get into Legend of Heroes games already.
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Everyone knows this game is going to be great, nothing new here. There are many options for RPG fans. It was great how you can equip skills, learn new skills, level them up and make them stronger. Combat felt fast and natural, you can also switch between characters on the fly. And the soundtrack? OMG!
There was hardly much shown of the story, it was mostly to get a feel of the combat. However, there is one negative aspect about the game. The game looks so blurry. Obviously it's not native res, but it looks SOOO blurry. The fronts are native res (like your health gauge and menu). It becomes so apparent when it's a mixed bag, but I guess it's better than everything being blurry. It's a shame how the game couldn't have been sharper.
Ys games are also ones I need to get into already.
Hyperdimension Neptunia PP
I haven't read or seen much of the game, I was expecting an idol game as in rhythm game. But I didn't see any of that. I didn't finish the demo, not sure if it has more gameplay than just management simulation. What I've seen is just you deciding what the main character does with her time to become a successful idol. You decide where she goes, wether to improve her dancing, wether to meet fans, promote herself etc. The game counts days and your day finishes after picking one activity and seeing the outcome of it. There are stats that show you wether you picked new fans etc. There was a lot of text. And boobs. Text became too boring eventually, so I was just skipping, waiting for some gameplay to come. It was taking too long, it seems like that's the game? Turned it off.
Time Travelers
It's a level-5 game that seems to be a visual novel type with high production values. The story seems typical but it's presented well. The story begins very dramatically of an event that is called the Lost Hole. You play with different characters a couple of years after this event. I took control of a man that is trying to save his family (they're being held hostage), he is forced to follow orders through his cellphone. Then you switch to a character that is trying to become a journalist but she is not given a chance, until one day she gets an opportunity. You switch back to the man while he is trying to diffuse a bomb. After he is done with that, he gets hit with a car, by the same girl that is trying to become a journalist. Suddenly time stops, you can avoid the character's death (you have to) by changing choices with the girl and in turn, her not given the opportunity to become a journalist.
I was enjoying the game until the last bit. I hate when you have to go through trial and error to change outcomes. Shame because the game seemed good, looks good, sounds fantastic and it also supports furigana. I didn't get to finish the demo.
