Panzer Dragoon Creator On Bringing Xbox One To Japan And Phantom Dust

Worse day ever was when they took down the Xbox servers and I could not play Phantom Dust online. I was hoping for a remake or sequel on the X360 but alas my prayers went unheard. I had all but given up until I saw this thread. MS make this happen. Release it as a digital game like Crimson Dragon with the expansion options of KI. I look forward to breaking my new controller when all of my shields load with no mana orbs (white) forcing me to have one crappy shield all game. Memories.

I honestly thing there is a market for something like Phantom Dust now days.

Digital card games have boomed in the last few years. The Magic games do well each year. Look at the response to Hearthstone.

Also hardcore competitive games have boomed as well. Look at the dota style games.

I think there is room in the market for a hardcore action, competitive card game on consoles. Especially with how online functionality has improved since the original came out.

It would also be a perfect fit for a f2p game in balanced properly.

iirc there were some problems with the publisher, Majesco, even I seem to recall there were problems to publish the game in the US as well, but it made it

Microsoft US declined to publish their own first party game. Majesco was basically publishing a first party title as a third party.

Majesco probably just didn't have the money to get it out in the EU.

I always thought Phantom Dust was a mech game, I remember playing one on Xbox but can't remember what it was called, I assume it was MS published, anyone got any idea what game it was?

My son was playing this last week and was really digging on it. Tell me who I need to tweet to make this happen. Heck, I've never done a kickstarter, but i'd do it for this. Where is the petition already?

Mechassault?

I loved it as well

This is what is shitting me about MS, they have some good original IPs or games they published initially they are just doing nothing with. If they flop on their first putting or arent blockbuster immediately they are shelved.

Games I really enjoyed we will probly never get more of;

Kameo
Phantom Dust
Banjo kazooie
Viva pinata (we got a sequel but its otherwise probably done)
Halo Wars (liked it more than the fps games)
Mechwarrior
PGR (you know a lot of peeps want another)
Amped
RalliSport Challenge
Grabbed by the Ghoulies (i liked it amd would by another)
Voodoo Vince
Lost Odyssey
Alan Wake
Kingdom Under Fire

Considering MS are known as a 'shooter box' they habe published or developed a plethora of really good interesting titles in a number of genres but they just dont do fuck all to nurture or grow them.

it's all about ROI. Sony is more open about spending money on projects that aren't likely to be commercial successes probably because they look at it more as a big picture sort of thing. The hardcore seem to appreciate that, but the jury is still out on whether that makes financial sense. I would guess no.

In this case, it probably wouldn't cost all that much to revive the IP by funding a HD port to be released as a digital only title on XBL (and maybe windows 8 store). Make some tweaks along the way so it's a better product potentially (like the Fable update that's coming out). That's something that could make financial sense and would be a low risk project. Bring the Fable update to the XB1 marketplace as well, while you're at it, and release Phantom Dust HD on 360 and XB1. If it's well received, then Phantom Dust 2 (digital) might be possible some day.

My guess is Alan Wake 2 and a new Banjo will be released on XB1. Those two franchises still have pull. Kameo is a long shot and the only hope of a sequel there is if Rare can show something potentially mindblowing as a prototype. Maybe leverage and upgrade the Kinect Sports Rivals engine for open world Banjo and Kameo games (released a year or two apart). Halo Wars 2 isn't likely unless they can find a developer who can really knock the controls (with Kinect integration) out of the park. PGR would be a nice release in the 2nd or 3rd year of XB1. Get some of the original devs to work on it so they could nail the feel. Maybe PGR would be best served as a digital focused title with free to play elements like Killer Instinct. Lower development costs, lower risk, and "one" game that could potentially survive the bulk of the generation with incremental add-ons and improvements instead of a retail only release that disappoints only to be followed by heavy discounts.

Out of the rest, I could only see Viva Pinata as also having some potential as a digital-focused title. They could develop it for 360/XB1/Win8 but have the best version be on XB1. They can reach a massive audience potentially that way and build a nice little franchise up for this gen. That's why Killer Instinct is such a grand experiment for Microsoft. If that works out relatively well, then we could see more such projects and more franchises revived IMO.

Never understood why this wasn't released in Europe? Does anyone know the reason behind this?

Microsoft published the game in Japan, but the US side dropped it from release around the same time it dropped Psychonauts. Majesco wound up picking up both games for a US release before their core-focused publishing side went up in a blaze of glory. I'm pretty sure the simultaneous commercial failure of Psychonauts, $20 Phantom Dust, and Advent Rising was what caused them to stick with licensed games and Game Boy Advance cartoons.

Anyway, I guess nobody stepped up for Europe.

I think Phil Spencer is doing a good in charge of first party studios and I think they are clearly looking at going back to their older IPs if it makes sense.
PGR is on the back burner for now as Phil said they don't think they need 3 racing games but he did like the game, certainly something they would consider in the future (Forza/Horizon rotation atm).
I think 2K own Amped, MS don't own Kingdom Under Fire.

Phil did say to IGN he liked Halo Wars and he talks about it with 343i boss a lot, that could come back and I think Banjo certainly will in some form or another.

I'd love a new Kameo and Alan Wake although Remedy own AW.

Holy Shit Mother of God!!!

Tweet Phill about this thread and about the news, and how many times you can fellow GAFfers, we must have it, to
save the gaming world
!

Not trying to degrade it, but if done it could be a f2p I could bare with.

It's almost tailor made to work with a f2p model.

If you guys want this to happen, best way to do so is by buying Crimson Dragon.

I"m glad they are going to talk to him after CD is released about a future project and it isn't just a one game deal they have with Grounding.

Phantom Dust 2 with global competitive multiplayer lobbies and ladder support would be pretty freaking awesome.

Going to buy Crimson Dragon just to encourage this to happen.

I was probably going to buy it anyway

Phantom Dust sequel?

I'm listening. Has sending massive amounts of tweets ever helped to get a game in development before?

Well for sony it has some sort of effect but I'm not sure tweeting has ever done anything when it comes to MS, we will see though.

like everyone is saying this game would be a perfect digital title, it could have the same model as Killer Instinct, that & the way it uses cards in real time battle will probably take this game to a whole new level then when it began on the OG xbox.

OMG OMG OMG please I beg everyone make this happen. Make this happen. I need a phantom dust 2. MS should bring back games from the original xbox that had popular online games since they cut it off.

I didn't buy an XBox 360 and I'll never buy an XBox One, but I'll definitely tweet this for you guys, since Phantom Dust was one of the greatest console multiplayer games ever. Holy shit was it ever awesome.

If they can make a spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon then a sequel or even spiritual one should happen to Phantom Dust.

We should arrange something via thunderclap so we all tweet at the same time, and all to the (hopefully) right people. It should gain more attention that way.

It'd be really interesting to see how much MS care about what gamers actually want.

oh god this is too much, I really hope this happens

That thunderclap thing would be awesome to use but NeoGaf seems to have some big traction on getting things started too. I think we need some people with huge followings who are big fans of phantom dust to help us out too & also hoping people buy the hell out of crimson dragon.

OMG...!!! Just give it to me now! I will go out to stores and drop $500 on xbone right now if Phantom Dust 2 is real!! And I will buy two copies of Phantom Dust 2 just like I did with the first game.
